The relationship of a variety of initial features and the outcome of therapy was analyzed for 363 children with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). All had entered "total therapy" studies between 1962 and 1971. The standard for comparing outcome of therapy was whether patients with a given feature attained or exceeded the median duration of complete remission, hematologic remission or survival for the group. An analysis of 176 diagnostic peripheral lymph node biopsies performed at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, was carried out with a view to determining the diseases that commonly present with this symptom, and their clinical correlates. Lymphokines which were mitogenic for cultured lymphocytes caused germinal centre enlargement within the regional lymph node following their intralymphatic injection. It was found that 17 μg of a lymphokine preparation, produced by 2·5 × 104 peritoneal exudate lymphocytes, resulted in a 14-fold increase in germinal centre area and a 7-fold increase in the labelled cell content of these centres on the 3rd day after injection. Antilymphocytic globulin (ALG) suppressed the development of haemolytic anaemia with positive antiglobulin (Coombs) reactions in intact and adult thymectomized New Zealand Black (NZB) mice, although some recipients eventually became positive after treatment was stopped.
