PURPOSE: Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) released by NADPH oxidase and inflammation are associated with arterial hypertension and eye diseases associated with high blood pressure, including glaucoma, retinopathies (e.g., age-related macular degeneration), and choroidopathies affecting ocular function; however, the mechanisms underlying these adverse outcomes remain undefined. The present study was designed to highlight the importance of oxidative stress in severe hypertension-related eye damage.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats (n = 7, unless otherwise specified for specific experiments) wer

AIM: Excessive sweat production in primary hyperhidrosis (PH) can lead to water and mineral loss, yet data on patients' dietary habits are limited.
PURPOSE: To explore associations between food and beverage consumption and severe PH.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Participants with primary palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis (n=171) and without hyperhidrosis (n=165) completed a validated questionnaire on food and beverage habits at two hospitals in northern Sweden. Frequency and quantity of specific foods and beverages were compared between groups.
RESULTS: A total of 336 individuals participated in t

Shapiro syndrome is a rare dysautonomic disorder defined by the triad of spontaneous recurrent hypothermia, hyperhidrosis, and agenesis of the corpus callosum. Recognition in older adults is uncommon and often delayed, as episodes can mimic infection or endocrine disease. We report an 81-year-old woman with established Shapiro syndrome who presented with recurrent admissions for profound hypothermia (31.3-33.6 °C) accompanied by delirium and sinus bradycardia. Previous MRI demonstrated complete agenesis of the corpus callosum with colpocephaly and hippocampal hypoplasia. Episodes were managed

Hyperhidrosis is thought to result from excessive stimulation of sweat glands due to increased sympathetic activity; however, data on systemic responses following bilateral thoracic sympathectomy as the definitive treatment have not yet been sufficiently evaluated. This study, designed as a prospective cohort investigation, included 24 patients who underwent sympathectomy for palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis at our center in 2023, along with an age-matched control group of equal size. In the sympathectomy group, pupillometry measurements were performed 1 day before surgery and on the 7th post

Dear Editor, Genodermatoses are usually diagnosed in early childhood but diagnosis may be delayed in rare cases. Schöpf-Schulz-Passarge syndrome (SSPS) first described in 1971 is a rare type of autosomal recessive ectodermal dysplasia characterized by palmoplantar keratoderma, periocular and eyelid apocrine hidrocystomas, hypodontia, hypotrichosis, and nail dystrophy (1). Fewer than 40 cases have been reported up to 2018 (2) and the number has slightly increased with subsequent case reports. We report here a 73-year-old male patient whose parents were third-degree cousins presented to dermatol

Hyperhidrosis (HH) is a condition characterized by excessive sweating beyond thermoregulation needs. HH can be primary with no known etiology or secondary, as a symptom of underlying medical disease or a side effect of certain medications. Furthermore, HH can be focal, affecting one or a few body parts, or generalized, affecting the entire body. We present the case of a 49-year-old male with a history of primary generalized HH as well as coronary artery disease whose HH symptoms surprisingly resolved following coronary angioplasty and stenting. This unprecedented outcome of the procedure point

Acute hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating. In the absence of other symptoms, the symptoms of sweating alone are often benign and may be ignored by patients and clinicians. Rarely, hyperhidrosis may be a harbinger of an underlying severe disease. Autonomic nervous system dysfunction leading to hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system can result in excessive sweating. This case report is about a gentleman who presented with acute hyperhidrosis, a symptom of autonomic dysfunction, which turned out to be a relapse of anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) antibody en

Granulosis rubra nasi (GRN) is a rare genodermatosis involving the eccrine glands with an unknown aetiology. It is clinically characterized by localized hyperhidrosis, erythema, papules, pustules, and vesicles over central region of face and usually manifests during early childhood. GRN is asymptomatic, spontaneously resolves during puberty, and treatment options have inconsistent results. We hereby present a case of GRN in 38 years female with sites and dermoscopy findings not defined so far.

Secondary hyperhidrosis is a multifactorial condition that poses unique diagnostic and management challenges. Distinguishing secondary from primary hyperhidrosis remains difficult due to overlapping symptoms. This review consolidates existing evidence on the numerous underlying causes and pathophysiologic mechanisms of secondary hyperhidrosis across various disciplines. Secondary hyperhidrosis typically manifests in the fourth decade of life or later, whereas primary hyperhidrosis usually begins earlier. Generalized hyperhidrosis often suggests a secondary cause, though the distribution can va

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Data on the population-based epidemiology of hyperhidrosis (HH) are scarce. This study investigated the epidemiology and healthcare of HH in Germany.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Claims data of adult persons insured by a German statutory health insurance (DAK-Gesundheit) between 2016 and 2020 were analysed. Included were persons aged 18 years and older with a diagnosis of HH (confirmed inpatient or outpatient diagnosis in the observation year) who were continuously insured. Following outcomes were measured: prevalence and incidence rates, severity of hyperhidrosis and inpati

BACKGROUND: Clozapine can be associated with significant side effects and tolerability issues. Hyperhidrosis occurs less commonly and is unanticipated by clinicians because of clozapine's significant anticholinergic activity.
CASE REPORT: A 34-year-old female developed clozapine-induced nocturnal, generalized hyperhidrosis following initial titration to 400 mg/day. Dose reduction did not decrease the side effect. Treatment with an anticholinergic medication could not be initiated because of constipation. Treatment with a beta blocker resulted in worsening of asthma. Treatment with a calcium c

Hyperhidrosis is a dermatological condition that causes psychosocial impairment and has a negative impact on patients' quality of life. The epidemiology of hyperhidrosis is currently poorly understood. The aim of this study was to analyse comorbidities and treatments in 511 subjects with hyperhidrosis selected from the patient records of Oulu University Hospital. The mean age of patients with local hyperhidrosis was 27.9 years and the majority were female (62.7%). The most common anatomical site of symptoms in the youngest age group was the palms, whereas the axillae were a more common site in

Hyperhidrosis can significantly curtail patient quality of life, from debilitating physical symptoms to social stigmatization and reduced life opportunities. Current treatments often prove unsatisfactory, especially in sufferers of generalized hyperhidrosis. In this open trial, we present the case of a refractory generalized hyperhidrosis treated with cannabinoids. We found a remarkable reduction in the volume of sweat and an improvement to the patient's quality of life using this novel low-cost and low-impact approach.

BACKGROUND: Research on hyperhidrosis comorbidities has documented the co-occurrence of diseases but has not provided information about temporal disease associations.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the temporal disease trajectories of individuals with hospital-diagnosed hyperhidrosis.
METHODS: This is a hospital-based nationwide cohort study including all patients with a hospital contact in Denmark between 1994 and 2018. International Classification of Diseases version-10 diagnoses assigned to inpatients, outpatients and emergency department patients were collected from the Danish National Patien

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal localized hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder of the central autonomic nervous system. No association between paroxysmal hyperhidrosis and severe headache has been previously described in literature.Case description: A 65-year-old woman with idiopathic paroxysmal localized hyperhidrosis combined with severe holocranial headache attacks is described in this case report. Extensive diagnostic testing by means of laboratory examinations, 24-hour urinalyses, chest X-ray, abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography scans, and brain and spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging coul

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic thoracic sympathicotomy is an effective approach to the treatment of idiopathic localized hyperhidrosis, and compensatory sweating is the main reason for patient dissatisfaction. Our study discusses both the long-term outcomes of sympathicotomy and the course of compensatory sweating.
METHODS: Patients with palmar and/or axillary hyperhidrosis who were operated by the same surgical team between January 2008 and December 2014 were included in the study. After at least 5 years (60 months) from operation, patients were questioned about their treatment outcomes by using an

Eccrine nevus is an extremely rare benign cutaneous hamartoma that usually occurs in childhood and adolescence. It has a wide range of clinical manifestations, and histological findings reveal a proliferation of structurally normal eccrine ducts. Herein, we present a case of eccrine nevus on the neck of an 8-year-old girl. Our literature review reveals that the head and neck region is a rare anatomical location for eccrine nevus as it has a predilection for extremities. Our review also suggests that overlying skin changes are common in eccrine nevus regardless of accompanying localized hyperhi
