Modified R5-R8 Thoracic Sympathectomy for Severe Compensatory Hyperhidrosis.

Compensatory hyperhidrosis is the most frequent complication after thoracic sympathectomy applied in the treatment of localized hyperhidrosis. It affects the quality of life in patients, especially in social, professional, and affective spheres. The present study aims to describe the operative technique of bilateral thoracic sympathectomy from R5 to R8 by videothoracoscopy as an optimized resolution of compensatory hyperhidrosis. The R5-R8 technique allows shorter surgical time, better ergonomics, more satisfactory aesthetic outcome, and reduction of postoperative morbidity. Severe compensator

Hyperhidrotic Macrodactylism Caused by Osteoid Osteoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Macrodactylism or macrodactyly is referred to as congenital deformity of fingers or toes, and the corresponding incidence rate is relatively low. In this article, we describe a young male with macrodactylism of the second toe of his right foot. He was suffering from persistent pain, overgrowth, and hyperhidrosis ofthe involved toe. Radiographic examination of the right foot showed a small translucent area surrounded by hyperplasia and sclerotic bone in the second distal phalanx, in addition to increased soft tissue density and volume. Surgical resection of the bone lesion and reduction of the

Investigation on aetiological factors in patients with hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis is a condition where the amount of sweat released to skin surface increases due to the over-active eccrine sweat glands. Hyperhidrosis causes considerable psychosocial distress in affected people. It affects the quality of life and leads to social anxiety disorders. AIMS: No study has been conducted in our country to investigate the epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory data of patients with hyperhidrosis. In this study, we aimed to retrospectively investigate the clinical and demographic characteristics, causes of sweating and laboratory findings in patients tre

Early-Onset Shapiro Syndrome Variant Treated with Pizotifen: A Case Report.

Shapiro Syndrome is a rare entity defined by the triad of recurrent spontaneous hypothermia, hyperhidrosis, and agenesis of the corpus callosum. Fewer than 100 cases have been reported so far and there are only few cases without a complete agenesis of corpus callosum ("Shapiro Syndrome Variant"). In this article, we report the clinical, electroencephalographic, and neuroimaging data of a patient with early-onset Shapiro Syndrome Variant. The case study describes a 4-year-old patient with episodes characterized by generalized hyperhidrosis, hypotonia, impaired consciousness, and hypothermia wit

Generalized hyperhidrosis secondary to presumed eccrine gland dysfunction with possible apocrine metaplasia.

We present a 57 year-old man presented with generalized hyperhidrosis and widespread, smooth, flesh colored papules on the torso and extremities.Histological examination from multiple biopsies demonstrated morphologic alteration of the eccrine glands with an apocrine phenotype, suggesting eitherapocrine metaplasia or the presence of "apoeccrine glands." The morphologic similarities between eccrine, apocrine, and apoeccrine as they relate to ourpatient's histologic findings are discussed. We consider secondary causes of generalized hyperhidrosis, which may also play a role in this patient's pre

Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia with dominant gait disturbances - case report.

INTRODUCTION.: Behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia is a clinically and pathologically heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorder, characterised by progressive behavioural changes and executive function impairment. It is the second most common neurodegenerative cause of dementia after Alzheimer's type dementia. Atypical course of the disease, including cases with other symptoms relevantly interfering with the clinical picture, provides a challenge in the diagnostic process. AIM AND MATERIAL.: The aim of this paper is to present a case of patient with BvFTD and gait disturbance as a main

Topical glycopyrrolate reduces axillary hyperhidrosis.

INTRODUCTION: Oral anti-cholinergic medications reduce generalized hyperhidrosis, but the effectiveness of topical anticholinergic solutions on axillary hyperhidrosis is unclear. This study determines the initial effectiveness of 1% and 2% topical glycopyrrolate spray and compares this with Botulinum toxin type A injections for the management of axillary hyperhidrosis. METHODS: In a non-randomized, consecutive patient, prospective questionnaire, treatment comparison study, 40 patients with axillary hyperhidrosis were allocated to one of four study groups (10 patients to each group): (a) 1% gl

[Treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)].

Hyperhidrosis can be localized or generalized and may cause the patient significant discomfort. Localized hyperhidrosis is usually primary, often begins in adolescence and is partly based on genetic dispositions. As a rule it does not necessitate investigations for secondary causes (e.g. endocrine or neurologic conditions). Generalized hyperhidrosis is commonly associated with environmental or lifestyle factors, and sometimes physiological factors. In new-onset generalized sweating of unclear origin, it may be appropriate to consider secondary causes (underlying diseases, medications, infectio

Innovative use of chemodenervation in the treatment of postoperative genital hyperhidrosis-like symptoms.

Postoperative complications present in many forms and can cause great morbidity and even mortality in patients who experience them. Frey syndrome is an example of a postoperative complication in which aberrant nerve regeneration following parotidectomy leads to hyperhidrosis induced by gustatory stimuli. We present a unique but similar case of aberrant nerve regeneration and resulting hypersecretion that emerged 6-7 months following perineoplasty and labial reduction for lichen sclerosus in a 53-year-old woman. An exhaustive investigation ruled out genitourinary causes of her symptoms. Pads, t

Tap water iontophoresis in the treatment of pediatric hyperhidrosis.

AIM OF THE STUDY: The treatment options for localized hyperhidrosis include antiperspirants, anticholinergics, iontophoresis, botulinum toxin and surgery. Tap water iontophoresis (TWI) involves immersing the affected area in tap water and passing a small electrical current through the area. Our aim was to assess the success of this therapy in a pediatric cohort. METHODS: Retrospective case note review of all patients younger than 18years who underwent TWI between 2002 and 2015. Demographic data, number of treatment sessions, side effects and overall success were analyzed. Individuals undergo

Prevalence and Characteristics of Hyperhidrosis in Sweden: A Cross-Sectional Study in the General Population.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis is defined as excessive sweating which can be primary or secondary. Data about the prevalence of primary hyperhidrosis are scarce for northern Europe. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of hyperhidrosis focusing on its primary form and describe the quality of life impairments for the affected individuals. METHODS: Five thousand random individuals aged 18-60 years in Sweden were investigated. The individuals' addresses were obtained from Statens personadressregister, SPAR, which includes all persons who are registered as resident in Sweden. A valida

Classification of Systemic and Localized Sweating Disorders.

Hyperhidrosis can be subdivided into generalized hyperhidrosis, with increased sweating over the entire body, and focal hyperhidrosis, in which the excessive sweating is restricted to specific parts of the body. Generalized hyperhidrosis may be either primary (idiopathic) or secondary. Secondary generalized hyperhidrosis may be caused by infections such as tuberculosis, hyperthyroidism, endocrine and metabolic disturbances such as pheochromocytoma, neurological disorders, or drugs. Focal hyperhidrosis may also be primary (idiopathic) or secondary. Frey's syndrome is one form of secondary focal

Oxybutynin for the Treatment of Primary Hyperhidrosis: Current State of the Art.

Oxybutynin is an anticholinergic drug with an emerging role in the treatment of hyperhidrosis. Several recent studies have documented that it is effective both in focal and generalized hyperhidrosis and shows universally good response among different groups of patients regardless of age, gender, and weight. The most common adverse event is dry mouth reported by almost all patients treated. The way this might affect long-term compliance and tolerability should be better investigated in the future.

Oxybutynin as a treatment for generalized hyperhidrosis: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis is a disorder that can impair quality of life. Localized treatments may be cumbersome and ineffective, and no systemic treatments have proven to be significantly beneficial. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness and tolerance of low-dose oxybutynin for hyperhidrosis. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. From June 2013 to January 2014, 62 patients with localized or generalized hyperhidrosis were enrolled. Oxybutynin was started at a dose of 2·5 mg per day and increased gradually to 7·5 mg per day. The primary outcome was defi

Focal hyperhidrosis secondary to eccrine naevus successfully treated with botulinum toxin type A.

Eccrine naevus (EN) is a rare skin hamartoma included in the organoid group of epidermal naevi, histologically defined as focal hyperplasia and/or hypertrophy of eccrine glands. Clinically, EN usually presents as hyperhidrotic patches with no visible skin changes, frequently located on the forearms. The decision to treat EN or not usually depends on the grade of hyperhidrosis, but there is no therapeutic consensus because of the rarity of this condition. We present a case diagnosed as EN in an adult patient with severe localized hyperhidrosis, which was successfully treated with botulinum toxi
