Phenotypic variability in a family with capillary malformations caused by a mutation in the RASA1 gene.

Hereditary capillary malformations are known to be caused by mutations in the RASA1 gene. The associated phenotype is still subject of debate. The purpose of this study was to conduct a RASA1 mutation analysis in the family that led to the initial discovery of the 5q locus, and to delineate the associated phenotype. A novel truncating mutation was identified in all clinically affected individuals and in none of the unaffected members. The associated phenotype was widely variable; all individuals had multifocal CM with at least one area of high flow. Various additional features were observed, s

Two cases of coccygeal polypoid eccrine nevi presenting as skin tags.

An eccrine nevus is a rare hamartoma characterized by an increase in the number or size of eccrine glands. Eccrine nevi usually present as localized hyperhidrosis and are not associated with overlying skin abnormalities. However, among the cases that have been reported in the literature, some unique presentations of eccrine nevi have been demonstrated, including a pigmented patch, a depressed nodule, linear papules, and a sacral skin tag. Herein, we report two unusual cases of coccygeal polypoid eccrine nevi and review the literature.

A Case of Eccrine Nevus.

Eccrine nevi are very rare cutaneous lesions which may or may not be accompanied by localized hyperhidrosis. Histological findings usually reveal a slightly increased number of eccrine glands without any other abnormalities. Herein we present a case of eccrine nevus not associated with localized hyperhidrosis on the left wrist of a 6-year-old girl. The lesion was a brownish, ovoid plaque approximately 1.0 × 1.5 cm in size, with a hyperkeratotic, slightly scaly papule in the center. It was treated by surgical excision.

Local injection of botulinum toxin A for palmar hyperhidrosis: usefulness and efficacy in relation to severity.

Botulinum toxin A is widely used in Europe and the USA for the treatment of localized hyperhidrosis, and its efficacy has been recognized. In this study, botulinum toxin A (Botox) was locally injected at 30 sites (2 U/injection) on the right palm in 27 patients with palmar hyperhidrosis (14 severe patients, 13 mild patients), and the results confirmed the efficacy of injection. The amount of sweat was then quantified for the left and right hands every month after local injection. The quantity of sweat on the treated hand was approximately one-fifth that on the untreated hand. In addition, the

Congenital mucinous eccrine nevus in a 5-month-old girl with frequent intertriginous dermatitis.

We present a 5-month-old girl with one localized plaque in a bandlike distribution on the left wrist since birth. Localized hyperhidrosis was also noted. Histopathologic examination of the lesion showed typical findings of mucinous eccrine nevus. Our report may serve to alert dermatologists to consider this entity in congenital lesions.

Sympathetic radiofrequency neurolysis for unilateral lumbar hyperhidrosis: a case report.

Patients with hyperhidrosis suffer from physical, social and mental discomfort which often cannot be treated sufficiently using conservative measures. A new percutaneous approach to sympathectomy using radiofrequency denervation has seemed to offer longer duration of action and less incidence of post sympathetic neuralgia. This article reports the authors' experience with sympathetic RF neurolysis in a 35 year old male with right unilateral lumbar hyperhidrosis. Under scopy guided localization of the lumbar spine sympathetic blockade with local anesthetics to L2-5 vertebral levels were perform

Diagnosis, impact, and management of focal hyperhidrosis: treatment review including botulinum toxin therapy.

Idiopathic localized hyperhidrosis, called for hyperhidrosis, affects almost 3% of the US population. The most frequent anatomic sites of involvement include the axillae, palms, soles, and face. For those affected, this condition can be extremely socially debilitating and interfere with work activities. Until recently, frequently ineffective topical regimens or problematic surgical procedures have been the treatments of choice. Since 1996, intracutaneous injections of botulinum toxin have been used as a minimally invasive treatment for this condition with numerous studies documenting safety, e

Use of oral glycopyrronium bromide in hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic hyperhidrosis may be a disabling condition causing emotional stress and negative impact on a patient's quality of life. Oral anticholinergics are one of the treatments available. There are few published data on the use of the anticholinergic drug glycopyrronium bromide (glycopyrrolate) given orally in the treatment of hyperhidrosis. OBJECTIVES: To report a retrospective analysis describing the treatment responses, doses and side-effects of oral glycopyrrolate in the treatment of idiopathic hyperhidrosis. METHODS: Review of case notes in a series of 24 patients, nine wi

Quantitative effect of anodal current in the treatment of primary hyperhidrosis by direct electrical current.

AIM: To determine the quantitative effect and technique of use of the anodal current for the treatment of palmoplantar hyperhidrosis on local areas of the palms and soles. METHODS: Twelve patients (four males and eight females) with idiopathic palmoplantar hyperhidrosis were enrolled in this study. Having determined the initial sweat intensities of both hands using the pad glove method, direct electrical current (d.c.) treatment was applied to the palms of the patients using a complete regulated d.c. unit for which the current and potential ranges were 0-30 mA and 0-90 V, respectively. Localized unilateral hyperhidrosis and neurofibromatosis type 1: case report of a new association.

The bloodstream represents a hostile environment that bacteria must overcome to cause bacteraemia. To understand how the major human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus manages this we have utilised a functional genomics approach to identify a number of new loci that affect the ability of the bacteria to survive exposure to serum, the critical first step in the development of bacteraemia. The expression of one of these genes, tcaA, was found to be induced upon exposure to serum, and we show that it is involved in the elaboration of a critical virulence factor, the wall teichoic acids (WTA), within

Idiopathic localized crossed (left side of the upper part of the body, right side of the lower part of the body) hyperhidrosis: successful treatment of facial area with botulinum a toxin injection.

BACKGROUND: Localized hyperhidrosis either may be due to an organic cause or may be idiopathic. Most cases of localized hyperhidrosis are reported to be idiopathic and unilateral. OBJECTIVE AND RESULT: We report a case of idiopathic localized hyperhidrosis with extensive involvement on crossed sides of the body. The hyperhidrotic area on the forehead was treated with a single session of botulinum A toxin injection with a quite successful result, and the area remained free of symptoms during a follow-up period of 5 months. CONCLUSION: All documented cases of idiopathic localized hyperhidrosis

Type A botulinum toxin: a new treatment for axillary and palmar hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis is an invalidating condition, and one that is difficult to treat. It is characterized by an excessive and uncontrolled production of sweat by the sweat glands, often causing psychological, social, and occupational problems for the patient. Hyperhidrosis can be distinguished in two forms: idiopathic (of unknown etiology), or secondary, due to an alteration of the endocrine system (ex: hyperthyroidism, neuropathy, neoplasia etc.) It is found in about 0.3-0.5% of the population and can be localized (axillary, palmar, plantar, facial) or diffused. The subcutaneous injection of type A

Botulinum toxin for treatment of craniofacial hyperhidrosis.

The effect of botulinum toxin A (BTX) was studied on 12 patients with idiopathic craniofacial hyperhidrosis. After confirming the diagnosis by Minor's iodine starch test we first treated one-half of the forehead with an injection of 2.5-4 ng BTX (Dysport) equidistantly intracutaneously. After 4 weeks we assessed the efficacy by another Minor's iodine starch test and then treated the other half. Another 4 weeks later a standardized telephone interview was carried out. After 1-7 days the craniofacial sweating in the area injected had completely ceased in 11 patients and was mildly reduced in the
