Spirometra mansoni is a zoonotic tapeworm with a global distribution; however, its population-level genetic structure and phylogeographic patterns remain poorly understood. Robust phylogeographic inference is essential to understand diversification and the geographical structuring of its mitochondrial diversity. We analysed three datasets of newly generated and publicly available mitochondrial cox1 sequences differing in length: a short-fragment alignment (303 bp; n = 319), a full-length dataset (1556 bp; n = 101) and a length-matched subset extracted from the full-length sequences (303 bp; n

Sparganosis is a food-borne helminthic infection caused by the plerocercoid larvae of Spirometra species and is only rarely associated with serosal involvement. We report a 25-year-old man who presented with hemorrhagic eosinophilic pericardial effusion after ingesting undercooked frog meat. Peripheral eosinophilia, eosinophils in pericardial fluid, and markedly elevated immunoglobulin E raised suspicion for helminthic infection. Repeated cultures, cytology, cross-sectional imaging, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography/computed tomography, and next-generation sequen

There is currently no highly sensitive and specific serological detection method for Spirometra mansoni infection, nor is there a rapid test strip available for onsite diagnosis. Therefore, in this study, an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent essay (ELISA) method suitable for detecting S. mansoni was developed, and a colour microsphere test strip based on pyruvate kinase (PK) recombinant protein (rSmPK) was developed. First, the excretory-secretory (ES) protein (ESP) of the plerocercoid was collected as the coating antigen to establish an ELISA method (SmES-ELISA). Moreover, PK was screened

A young Blue Heeler presented for abdominal distension and weight gain, without a history of raw feeding or travel outside the western suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Abdominal ultrasound noted innumerable small anechoic oval cystic structures scattered throughout the peritoneal cavity and suspended in a large volume of echogenic peritoneal effusion. Subsequent diagnostics, including computed tomography, exploratory laparotomy, histopathology and molecular testing, confirmed the structures were Spirometra mansoni plerocercoids, and the patient was diagnosed with proliferative sparga

OBJECTIVE: Differentiating constitutional delay of growth and puberty from hypogonadotropic hypogonadism is still a problem in clinical practice. Our previous study demonstrated that the peak/basal ratio of the free alpha-subunit of the glycoprotein hormones is higher in normal prepubertal boys than in male adults with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. The objective of this study was to assess the performance of this ratio in normal male patients at different ages and levels of pubertal development, and in patients with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, both isolated and combined with other pituitar

PURPOSE: Suture placement and alkali burn to the cornea are often used to induce inflammatory corneal neovascularization (CorNV) models in animals. This study compares the changes in genome-wide gene expression under these two CorNV conditions in mice.
METHODS: CorNV were induced in Balb/c mice by three interrupted 10-0 sutures placed at sites about 1 mm from the corneal apex, or by alkali burns that were 2 mm in size in the central area of the cornea. At the points in time when neovascularization progressed most quickly, some eyeballs were subjected to histological staining to examine CorNV

Sparganosis, a zoonotic infection caused by the plerocercoid (sparganum) larval stage of Spirometra spp., is rarely reported in domestic cats. Sparganosis is typically seen as subcutaneous or visceral granulomatous lesions and has been associated with Spirometra mansonoides in North America. A proliferative form of sparganosis, with tissue invasion and widespread dissemination, has always been associated with Sparganum proliferum. However, emerging molecular evidence challenges this distinction. Here, we report a confirmed case of proliferative sparganosis in a domestic cat caused by Spirometr

Spirometra is a genus of zoonotic cestodes with an ambiguous species-level taxonomic history. Previously, Spirometra mansonoides was considered the only species present in North America. However, recent molecular data revealed the presence of at least three distinct species in the USA: Spirometra sp. 2 and 3, and Spirometra mansoni. This study aimed to elucidate the diversity and potential host associations of Spirometra species among companion animals in the USA. Samples (N = 302) were examined from at least 13 host species, including mammals, amphibians and reptiles. Sample types included eg

Larval cestodiasis is characterized by aberrant migration and proliferation of larval cestodes in body cavities or tissues and is a rarely reported entity in domestic dogs. Cestodes of the genera Mesocestoides and Spirometra are reported as causative agents, and can cause tetrathyridiosis and proliferative sparganosis, respectively. Reported herein is a case of abdominal larval cestodiasis in a companion dog from Florida, USA. During routine ovariohysterectomy, larval cestodes were noted throughout the peritoneum. Histologically, the larvae were characterized by asymmetric budding projections

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) sparganosis is an exceptionally rare parasitic infection caused by the larvae of Spirometra species. Its migratory nature and nonspecific clinical presentation often lead to misdiagnosis, posing significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. While CNS involvement typically affects either the brain or spinal cord, disseminated cases involving both regions are exceedingly rare.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 34-year-old woman who initially presented with progressive low back pain and paraparesis. She was diagnosed with spinal sparganosis f

Sparganosis is a neglected food- and water-borne zoonotic disease caused by members of the tapeworm genus Spirometra. More than 1600 human cases have been reported in the literature, primarily in Korea and China; however, the clinical significance of sparganosis is likely underestimated. The control of this disease is challenging in endemic regions because of the complexity of its lifecycle and the involvement of many animal host species, and treatment of clinical disease in humans and animals with selected drugs (e.g., mebendazole and/or praziquantel), even at elevated doses, is often ineffec

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic pleural effusion (EPE), characterized by atypical symptoms and rarity, is easily over-looked and misdiagnosed.
METHODS: The patient underwent comprehensive routine laboratory tests including blood analysis and pleural effusion examination, along with B-ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) imaging. Based on combined evaluation of the epidemiological history, serum-specific parasite antibody detection and targeted Next-Generation Sequencing were performed on the clinical specimens.
RESULTS: The blood routine and pleural fluid routine of the patients suggested that t

Spirometra mansoni is an important zoonotic parasitic tapeworm that is transmitted mainly through the faeces of definitive hosts such as cats and dogs. However, there is currently no molecular detection method for S. mansoni in the faeces of definitive hosts. Here, a PCR assay for S. mansoni in the faeces of definitive hosts was developed, and the effects of the sampling site, sample storage temperature and duration on the detection results were evaluated. qPCR assays and LAMP assays targeting the cytb gene were performed with optimized primers, probe concentrations and annealing temperatures.

Protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) refer to the covalent attachment of chemical groups to polypeptide chains after protein synthesis, which expands protein chemical diversity and enhances functional versatility. Common PTM types include phosphorylation, glycosylation, and lysine acetylation (Kac), a major, reversible PTM regulated by lysine acetyltransferases (KATs) and lysine deacetylases (KDACs). Kac cross-regulates with other modifications to govern chromatin transcription and epigenetic programs, and occurs in histones, nucleoproteins, and cytoplasmic regulatory factors. In th

Sparganosis is a key food-borne zoonosis and is typically endemic to the southeast coast of China. The present study reports a very rare case of sparganosis occurring in the mons pubis. The case described herein highlights the importance of considering subcutaneous sparganosis as a differential diagnosis in patients with subcutaneous masses. The disease manifests predominantly as subcutaneous nodules or intracranial mass lesions. Infection is primarily acquired by ingesting raw or undercooked amphibian or reptile flesh or by the consumption of water containing copepods. An accurate diagnosis a

Neuroparasitic infections are caused by a variety of organisms that affect the central nervous system (CNS). Given the increasing rates of international travel, climate change, and immunosuppression, neuroparasitic diseases represent a major global health concern. Accurate diagnosis relies on non-invasive medical imaging combined with exposure history and laboratory testing. Timely institution of appropriate therapy can drastically improve patient outcomes. This article represents an international collaboration of radiologists on multiple continents to illustrate exemplary radiologic cases and

Paragonimiasis is a foodborne parasitic infection caused by trematodes of the genus Paragonimus, primarily P. westermani and P. miyazakii in Japan. Though once endemic, its incidence has declined significantly in recent decades. However, globalization, changes in dietary customs, and an increase in foreign-born residents have contributed to the emergence of new cases, particularly in urban settings. We present a case of a 25-year-old man from Cambodia, living in Japan for two years as a technical intern trainee, who developed a productive cough and pleuritic chest pain. He reported consuming r
