BACKGROUND: Granulomatous mastitis is an uncommon chronic inflammatory breast disease with diverse etiologies, including infectious causes.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we report the case of a 74-year-old Thai woman with recurrent breast mastitis due to rare breast sparganosis. Four years after an initial diagnosis of granulomatous mastitis of unknown etiology, she presented with a new painless breast mass at a different site. Histopathological examination of a new lesion revealed a cestode worm surrounded by reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. Molecular identification using PCR targeting Cytochrome Ox

Sparganosis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by the larval plerocercoid (sparganum) of tapeworms in the genus Spirometra. Humans become infected by ingesting raw or undercooked meat from second intermediate or paratenic hosts such as frogs, snakes, and wild boars by drinking water contaminated with cyclopoid copepods carrying the larval procercoid, or by applying frog meat poultices. The gold standard for diagnosis remains the molecular confirmation of plerocercoids in surgically removed specimens. However, because these larvae migrate in subcutaneous tissues and the central nervous system elici

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection caused by the plerocercoid larvae (spargana) of Spirometra species. Central nervous system (CNS) involvement is uncommon; cerebral sparganosis can be particularly challenging to diagnose because its clinical presentation and imaging features often mimic those of more common parasitic infections (e.g., neurocysticercosis) or neoplastic lesions.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 74-year-old woman with slowly progressive Alzheimer's disease, who had undergone regular brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations over the past three years, was inciden

BACKGROUND: Cerebral sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection of the central nervous system caused by the plerocercoid larva of Spirometra species. A hallmark of the disease is the dynamic migratory behavior of the parasite within the brain, often resulting in progressive neurological symptoms and shifting radiologic features. While most cases are diagnosed within a few years of symptom onset, chronic cases spanning more than a decade are exceedingly rare. Understanding long-term imaging evolution, migratory patterns, and treatment strategies in these rare cases is crucial for optimal managem

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to conduct a molecular characterization of Spirometra tapeworm from jungle cat (Felis chaus) in Guilan Province, north of Iran using DNA sequence analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (Cox1) and 12S rDNA sequences.
METHODS: Morphological features of the adult tapeworm of Spirometra were evaluated using specific staining and light microscopy. The molecular characterization was performed using partial Cox1 and 12S rDNA regions. Genetic diversity was calculated and phylogenetic trees of the obtained sequences were constructed.
RESULTS: Mo

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis is a worldwide food-borne parasitic disease caused by spargana infection, which infects the muscle of frogs and snakes as well as many tissues and organs in humans. There are currently no viable treatments for sparganosis. Understanding spargana's nutrition source and carbohydrate metabolism may be crucial for identifying its energy supply and establishing methods of treatment for sparganosis.
METHODS: Using an amino acid analyzer and nutrient concentration detection kits, we assessed nutrient concentrations in the muscles of Fejervarya limnocharis and Pelophylax planc

Sparganosis has been a neglected parasitic zoonosis for a long time. The accurate identification of Spirometra tapeworms in clinical practice is poorly understood. A case of breast sparganosis was reported in Henan Province of central China. One plerocercoid approximately 3.5 cm in length was collected from the patient. The clinical isolate was identified as Spirometra mansoni based on the barcoding sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1). Finally, the epidemiology of sparganosis in central China was reviewed. Comprehensive public health education should be carried out

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis is a rare zoonotic disease caused by plerocercoid larvae of the genera Spirometra or Sparganum (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae). The larvae of Spirometra generally do not undergo asexual reproduction, whereas those of Sparganum can induce proliferative lesions in infected tissues. This paper presents an unusual case of proliferative sparganosis due to infection with Spirometra mansoni in a cat, normally considered a definitive host of the species.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old male domestic cat was presented with a mass on the right side of the face that underwent progr

Hepatic sparganosis (HS) is extremely rare and has not been previously reported in Eastern China. We report the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with HS from Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China. The patient was admitted due to an acute biliary tract infection, and the symptoms improved after treatment at the Gastroenterology Department. During an ultrasound examination on admission, an abnormal echo was incidentally discovered at the junction of the left and right lobes of the liver. Thereafter, upper abdominal computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) non-contrast and

Spirometra mansoni is a diphyllobothroid cestode and one of the causing agents of sparganosis, a zoonotic foodborne and waterborne infection in humans. This parasite has an indirect life cycle with domestic and wild canids or felids as definitive hosts. The last report of S. mansoni in Costa Rica was done in 2004 by morphological assessment of worms, whereas molecular evidence of this species was obtained recently in the Americas. Herein, we present seven cases of spirometrosis in four dogs, three cats and a coyote from different regions of Costa Rica occurring in a time span of a year. Dog ca

The plerocercoid larvae of Spirometra mansoni are etiological agents of human and animal sparganosis. Annexins are proteins with important roles in parasites. However, our knowledge of annexins in S. mansoni is still inadequate. In this study, 18 new members of the Annexin (ANX) family were characterized in S. mansoni. The clustering analysis demonstrated that all the SmANXs were divided into two main classes, consistent with the patterns of conserved motif organization. The 18 SmANXs were detected at all developmental stages (plerocercoid, adult, and egg) and displayed ubiquitous but highly v

Tapeworms of the genus Spirometra Faust, Campbell et Kellogg, 1929 have long been known as intestinal parasites of carnivores and their larvae (spargana) have been found in various vertebrates. Nevertheless, their species diversity, host associations and geographical distribution remain poorly understood. Molecular data clearly confirm the validity of the genus, which has been synonymised by several authors with Diphyllobothrium Cobbold, 1858. Despite morphological similarities between the species of the two genera, they are not closely related and also differ in their life cycle. The present

The plerocercoid larva of Spirometra mansoni can cause a parasitic zoonosis-sparganosis. Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) plays a very important role in the life activities of parasites. However, little is known about the MDH family in S. mansoni. We identified eight new MDH members in S. mansoni in this study. Clustering analysis divided SmMDHs into two groups and revealed patterns similar to the conserved motif organization. RT-qPCR suggested that five MDHs were highly expressed in the mature proglottid and that three MDHs were highly expressed in the gravid proglottid. Phylogenetic analysis revea

Sparganosis is one of the common zoonotic diseases caused by infection with the larval plerocercoids (spargana) of the cestode genus Spirometra. While this parasite distributes globally in canine and feline hosts, human infection is predominantly reported in East Asia, especially China, Korea, Japan, and Thailand. Maybe related to the behavior and food culture, this zoonotic disease is rather rare in South Asia to the Middle East. In these areas, sporadic case reports have been appeared mostly in the local medical journals. To draw a solid picture of sparganosis in these non-endemic areas of A

A 20-year-old male patient with a 15-month history of recurrent cough and hemoptysis presented at our hospital with suspected pulmonary sparganosis. Computed Tomography (CT) revealed migratory and variable lesions ranging from patchy shadows to nodular and cavernous foci. Additionally, the location and morphology of the cavities changed rapidly. The patient's peripheral blood eosinophil count remained within the normal range throughout the course of the infection, and antibiotics (moxifloxacin) alleviated the symptoms. At the early stage of admission, there was a slight increase in neutrophil
