Establishment of Animal Infection Model of Spirometra Mansoni and Identification of Spirometra Mansoni by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay.

Objective: Spirometra mansoni is a crucial zoonotic parasite. Its larvae are more harmful than adult worms due to their ability to migrate through the host's tissues and organs. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an animal model of spargana for observing pathological changes and exploring diagnostic techniques. Methods: In this study, we infected Kunming mice and cats without any pathogens by feeding sparganum (with the scolex and neck) in order to understand the infection cycle of S. mansoni and explore the preservation host of sparganosis. The infection of S. mansoni was determined by f

Identification and Immunological Characterization of Annexin B8 and Annexin E1 from Spirometra Erinaceieuropaei Spargana.

Sparganosis is a parasitic zoonotic disease that poses a serious threat to public hygiene and human health. Annexin is a phospholipid-binding protein with calcium ion binding activity, serving various important functions, including interaction with the parasite and regulation of the host's immune response. In this study, two annexin (ANX) family genes, Spirometra erinaceieuropaei (S. erinaceieuropaei) Annexin B8 (SeANXB8) and E1 (SeANXE1), isolated from spargana, were cloned and immunologically characterized. Both recombinant S. erinaceieuropaei Annexin B8 (rSeANXB8) and E1 (rSeANXE1) were spe

First morphological and molecular characterisation of Spirometra mansoni (Cestoda, Diphyllobothriidae) in a domestic cat from Veracruz, Mexico.

Cestodes of the genus Spirometra are multi-host parasites that are the causative agents of spirometrosis in domestic and wild carnivores and sparganosis in humans, endemic diseases in tropical and subtropical regions. In domestic animals, the infection is usually asymptomatic or produces gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting and chronic diarrhoea. In humans, an incidental parasitosis develops where the plerocercoid can lodge in tissues and cause a variety of symptoms, including neuropathies, blindness, paralysis, and death. Reported here is a case of spirometrosis in a domestic cat treated i

Robot-assisted treatment of secondary epilepsy caused by parasitic infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral sparganosis represents the most severe manifestation of sparganosis, with a relatively low global incidence. For cases of secondary epileptic seizures caused by sparganosis infection in the functional areas of the brain, what advanced neurosurgical techniques should be employed to precisely identify and excise the epileptic lesions in the deep functional areas of the brain, aiming to achieve maximal removal while minimising the risk of neurological deficits? This remains a current challenge for epilepsy surgeons. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old Chinese male was admitted

Sparganosis of the Cauda Equina: A Rare Case of Lower Thoracic Cord Edema and Diagnostic Challenges.

Sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection caused by the larvae of Spirometra species, with spinal involvement being exceedingly uncommon. We present the case of a 46-year-old woman with progressive lower limb weakness, sensory deficits, and bowel and bladder dysfunction over a 3-month period. Initial magnetic resonance imaging revealed an abnormal intradural lesion from L2 to S2, along with thoracic spinal cord edema, raising suspicion for a spinal dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF). After referral to our institution, further imaging ruled out DAVF, and findings suggested arachnoiditis and rad

Zoonotic parasites associated with predation by dogs and cats.

One of the most common behaviors of cats that have an indoor/outdoor lifestyle is to bring hunted "gifts" to their owners, represented by small mammals, reptiles and birds. Access to the outdoors by dogs and cats may represent a problematic issue, since they may be at risk of diseases, traffic accidents and ingestion of toxins. Yet, the impact of this population of roaming dogs and cats predating wildlife is another concerning issue that receives less attention. Despite these risks, most owners still prefer to give outdoor access to their pets to allow them to express their "natural instincts,

Spirometra infection in a captive Samar cobra (Naja samarensis) in the United States: An imported case?

We report a case of Spirometra infection in a Samar cobra (Naja samarensis) imported from the Philippines, belonging to a zoological collection in the southern United States. Under a poor post-surgical prognosis, the snake was euthanized, and at necropsy plerocercoids of a Diphyllobotriidea were found in its subcutaneous tissues and musculature. Molecular and phylogenetic analyses of the complete cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (cox1) gene of the mitochondrial DNA confirmed that the isolate belonged to the genus Spirometra and was closely related to Spirometra mansoni isolates from Asian countr

The serum IgG antibody level as a biomarker for clinical outcome in patients with cerebral sparganosis after treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection of the brain tissue. The remission of MRI change and clinical symptom has been used to evaluate the therapeutic effect. However, there is no study to correlate the serum IgG antibody level of sparganum to the prognosis of disease after treatment. METHODS: 87 patients with cerebral sparganosis were collected from three medical centers. Clinical symptoms and MRI changes were evaluated at 12 months after initial treatment, and serum IgG antibody level of sparganum was evaluated at 2, 6, and 12 months after treatment. The positive c

First report of Spirometra (Eucestoda; Diphyllobothriidae) naturally occurring in a fish host.

Spirometra Faust, Campbell et Kellogg, 1929 is a genus of cestodes belonging to the family Diphyllobothriidae. To date, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals are known second intermediate hosts of these parasites; humans can also be infected (the zoonotic disease is known as sparganosis or spirometrosis). Although the number of phylogenetic studies on Spirometra spp. has increased worldwide in recent years, there are few in South America. Specifically in Uruguay, molecular studies have shown that tapeworms of S. decipiens (Diesing, 1850) complexes 1 and 2 are present in this country. In this study

Cerebral sparganosis in a child with corpus callosum invasion: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Invasion of the corpus callosum by sparganosis is rare in children. After invading the corpus callosum, sparganosis has various migration modes, which can break through the ependyma and enter the ventricles, thus causing secondary migratory brain injury. CASE PRESENTATION: A girl aged 4 years and 7 months presented with left lower limb paralysis for more than 50 days. Blood examination showed that the proportion and absolute number of eosinophils in the peripheral blood were increased. Furthermore, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples revealed

Sparganosis of a thoracic vertebra misdiagnosed as bone metastasis from lung cancer.

Sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection caused by plerocercoid tapeworm larvae. We described a case of a 27-year-old man presenting with numbness in both legs and masses in the right lung and spine, initially thought to have spinal metastasis from lung cancer. However, after pathological and parasitological examinations, the patient was found to have spinal sparganosis, likely due to a history of consuming raw frogs. The patient was successfully treated with praziquantel, resulting in the recovery of muscle strength in his legs. This case highlights the importance of considering spinal sparg

A Rare Human Helminth Infection in Russia.

Currently, more than 500,000 cases of various helminthes in humans are reported annually in the Russian Federation. This figure may not reflect the true incidence of helminthes, as only nine separate nosological forms are compulsory notifiable. The rest of the species of detected helminthes are included in a separate category of "other helminthes" or "rare helminthes". The bulk of the latter is represented by the helminthes with a rate of incidence that does not exceed one case per 100,000 people. This review is based on data derived from publications in the Russian language, both from the Rus

Description of Spirometra asiana sp. nov. (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) found in wild boars and hound dogs in Japan.

According to the latest taxonomy of Spirometra species, six species (lineages) have been tentatively classified as valid. These species are Spirometra erinaceieuropaei, S. folium, S. mansoni, undescribed Spirometra sp. 1, and S. decipiens complex 1 and 2. Among these species, the undescribed species was first discovered as plerocercoid larvae in wild boars in Japan and further studies have confirmed that this species is a new taxon belonging to the genus Spirometra. Here, we describe Spirometra asiana sp. nov., which is difficult to distinguish morphologically from known Spirometra species. Ho
