A case report: 1-year follow-up of cerebral sparganosis mansoni with a stroke-like onset.

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis mansoni is a parasitic disease caused by infection with the larvae of Spirometra spp. tapeworms. Its clinical manifestations and severity depend on the migration and the location of the parasites. The proportion of cerebral sparganosis in all Spirometra mansoni infections is 13.5% in Thailand and 12.4% in China. In the clinical setting, cerebral sparganosis is often misdiagnosed due to atypical characteristics, irregular intracranial location, and atypical epidemiology. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient in the case study suffered from an acute paroxysmal attack of lateral

Broad tapeworms (Diphyllobothriidae), parasites of wildlife and humans: Recent progress and future challenges.

Tapeworms of the family Diphyllobothriidae, commonly known as broad tapeworms, are predominantly large-bodied parasites of wildlife capable of infecting humans as their natural or accidental host. Diphyllobothriosis caused by adults of the genera Dibothriocephalus, Adenocephalus and Diphyllobothrium is usually not a life-threatening disease. Sparganosis, in contrast, is caused by larvae (plerocercoids) of species of Spirometra and can have serious health consequences, exceptionally leading to host's death in the case of generalised sparganosis caused by 'Sparganum proliferum'. While most of th

Case Report: Morphologic and Genetic Identification of Cerebral Sparganosis.

A 50-year-old Chinese woman with a history of weakness and paroxysmal seizures of the left limb presented to our hospital with a ten-day history of neck pain. Imaging showed that there was a mass in the frontal lobe of her brain. On resection of the mass, a motile worm was identified. Morphological observation and molecular analysis of the mitochondrial COX1 and 28S rRNA genes of the worm extracted from the brain identified the causative agent as Spirometra mansoni. Homology search of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified products from the case was conducted against gene fragments from

The medical relevance of Spirometra tapeworm infection in Indonesian Bronzeback snakes (Dendrelaphis pictus): A neglected zoonotic disease.

AIM: Spirometra parasites cause sparganosis, a zoonotic disease, especially in reptiles and humans. This study aimed to report on the prevalence and effects of Spirometra parasites infection on public health and provide a scientific foundation for its prevention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 378 living Indonesian wild-caught and captive-bred Bronzeback snakes (Dendrelaphis pictus) were selected. The snakes were euthanized using ethyl ether anesthesia before checking for Spirometra parasites. The numbers of Spirometra located in the muscle tissue, subcutaneous tissue, and coelom (includin

Cerebral sparganosis presenting with atypical postcontrast magnetic resonance imaging findings: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis, a rare and severe parasitic infection caused by the larvae of Spirometra species or simply sparganum, generally involves subcutaneous tissue or muscle. But occasionally, sparganum can also invade the human brain, resulting in cerebral sparganosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old woman presented with a 10-day history of headache. Postcontrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an irregular lesion with enhancement and the tunnel-shaped focus extending to the contralateral hemiphere. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis disclosed pleocytosis (166 cells/μL) and an e

Characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of Spirometra decipiens (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) from China.

The plerocercoid larvae (spargana) of Spirometra decipiens (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) can parasitize humans, causing the zoonotic sparganosis. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of this tapeworm was determined using an Illumina sequencing platform. The entire genome was 13,642 bp in length and contained 12 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, two ribosomal RNAs, and two non-coding regions. The phylogeny indicated that S. decipiens was closely related to Spirometra erinaceieuropaei and supported the monophyletic relationships between Spirometra, Diphyllobothrium, and Diplogo

Case Report: Human Subcutaneous Sparganosis in a Thai Migrant.

Human sparganosis is a cestode infection which is neglected as a differential diagnosis outside endemic countries. Diagnosis and therapy may be challenging depending on the clinical presentation and anatomic localization. The disease manifests predominantly as subcutaneous nodule(s) or intracranial mass lesion(s). Infection is primarily acquired by ingesting raw or undercooked amphibian or reptile flesh or by drinking water containing copepods. We report an unusual case of subcutaneous Spirometra erinaceieuropaei sparganosis presenting with two nonmigratory nodules in close proximity to each o

Ancient Parasite Analysis and Zoonotic Potential of Spirometra sp. in Two Related Sites from Pernambuco, Brazil.

Pathoecology studies the environmental and cultural factors that contribute to the maintenance of infections or diseases in populations. Concerning parasites, it requires the evaluation of these factors based on the presence and life cycle of these organisms. For this reason, it is possible to apply this concept in the context of ancient populations in order to understand the parasite-host dynamic or even the health consequences faced by the members of the populations. This study aimed to apply the pathoecology concept in Pedra do Tubarão and Cemitério do Caboclo archaeological sites. Six copr

Subcutaneous Sparganosis on Abdomen Mimicking Multiple Lipomas.

Human sparganosis is a food-borne zoonosis mainly caused by the plerocercoid belonging to the genus Spirometra. The most common clinical sign of sparganosis is a subcutaneous mass in the trunk including abdominal or chest wall. The mass may be mistaken for a malignant tumor, thereby causing difficulty in terms of diagnosis and treatment. A 66-year-old woman visited our clinic for the removal of a lipoma-like mass. It was movable, hard, and painless. We identified 2 white mass, measuring 0.2×4 cm and 0.2×1 cm. Pathologic findings indicated the white mass was a sparganum. She recalled having eat

Human proliferative sparganosis update.

Proliferative sparganosis is one of the most bizarre and mysterious parasitic diseases ever described. The causative parasite is Sparganum proliferum, which is a pseudophyllidean cestode distinct from Spirometra tapeworms. Here we overview this rare but fascinating disease with the all original case reports on human patients published in the last 115 years. Proliferative sparganosis is clearly divided into two disease types, cutaneous and internal proliferative sparganosis. Cutaneous type starts with a skin eruption caused by the dermal invasion of a sparganum. Skin lesion progresses to larger

Axillary sparganosis, changes in ultrasound images over six months: A case report.

Sparganosis is an infestation caused by a tapeworm belonging to the genus Spirometra. The typical radiologic findings of sparganosis describe elongated, folded, band or tubular, hypoechoic structures with surrounding increased echogenicity in ultrasonography. These imaging features have been highly consistent with pathology results. Here, we report an interesting case of axillary sparganosis that manifested changes on ultrasound images over a period of 6 months.

Orbital sparganosis in an 8-year boy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis is one of the neglected but important food-borne parasitic zoonoses, with higher prevalence in Asian countries. The infection is commonly located in the subcutaneous tissue, brain, breast, and lung, but fewer reported infections involve the eye. Because the majority of patients with sparganosis are adults, it is likely to be missed in children. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old boy presented to our clinic complaining of a painless ocular mass in his right eye for 1 month. The boy had a history of eating frogs and frog poultice applications to his eyelids. The patient wa
