Shapiro syndrome is a rare dysautonomic disorder defined by the triad of spontaneous recurrent hypothermia, hyperhidrosis, and agenesis of the corpus callosum. Recognition in older adults is uncommon and often delayed, as episodes can mimic infection or endocrine disease. We report an 81-year-old woman with established Shapiro syndrome who presented with recurrent admissions for profound hypothermia (31.3-33.6 °C) accompanied by delirium and sinus bradycardia. Previous MRI demonstrated complete agenesis of the corpus callosum with colpocephaly and hippocampal hypoplasia. Episodes were managed

Hyperhidrosis (HH) is a condition characterized by excessive sweating beyond thermoregulation needs. HH can be primary with no known etiology or secondary, as a symptom of underlying medical disease or a side effect of certain medications. Furthermore, HH can be focal, affecting one or a few body parts, or generalized, affecting the entire body. We present the case of a 49-year-old male with a history of primary generalized HH as well as coronary artery disease whose HH symptoms surprisingly resolved following coronary angioplasty and stenting. This unprecedented outcome of the procedure point

Acute hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating. In the absence of other symptoms, the symptoms of sweating alone are often benign and may be ignored by patients and clinicians. Rarely, hyperhidrosis may be a harbinger of an underlying severe disease. Autonomic nervous system dysfunction leading to hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system can result in excessive sweating. This case report is about a gentleman who presented with acute hyperhidrosis, a symptom of autonomic dysfunction, which turned out to be a relapse of anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) antibody en

Secondary hyperhidrosis is a multifactorial condition that poses unique diagnostic and management challenges. Distinguishing secondary from primary hyperhidrosis remains difficult due to overlapping symptoms. This review consolidates existing evidence on the numerous underlying causes and pathophysiologic mechanisms of secondary hyperhidrosis across various disciplines. Secondary hyperhidrosis typically manifests in the fourth decade of life or later, whereas primary hyperhidrosis usually begins earlier. Generalized hyperhidrosis often suggests a secondary cause, though the distribution can va

BACKGROUND: Clozapine can be associated with significant side effects and tolerability issues. Hyperhidrosis occurs less commonly and is unanticipated by clinicians because of clozapine's significant anticholinergic activity.
CASE REPORT: A 34-year-old female developed clozapine-induced nocturnal, generalized hyperhidrosis following initial titration to 400 mg/day. Dose reduction did not decrease the side effect. Treatment with an anticholinergic medication could not be initiated because of constipation. Treatment with a beta blocker resulted in worsening of asthma. Treatment with a calcium c

Hyperhidrosis is a dermatological condition that causes psychosocial impairment and has a negative impact on patients' quality of life. The epidemiology of hyperhidrosis is currently poorly understood. The aim of this study was to analyse comorbidities and treatments in 511 subjects with hyperhidrosis selected from the patient records of Oulu University Hospital. The mean age of patients with local hyperhidrosis was 27.9 years and the majority were female (62.7%). The most common anatomical site of symptoms in the youngest age group was the palms, whereas the axillae were a more common site in

Hyperhidrosis can significantly curtail patient quality of life, from debilitating physical symptoms to social stigmatization and reduced life opportunities. Current treatments often prove unsatisfactory, especially in sufferers of generalized hyperhidrosis. In this open trial, we present the case of a refractory generalized hyperhidrosis treated with cannabinoids. We found a remarkable reduction in the volume of sweat and an improvement to the patient's quality of life using this novel low-cost and low-impact approach.

BACKGROUND: Research on hyperhidrosis comorbidities has documented the co-occurrence of diseases but has not provided information about temporal disease associations.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the temporal disease trajectories of individuals with hospital-diagnosed hyperhidrosis.
METHODS: This is a hospital-based nationwide cohort study including all patients with a hospital contact in Denmark between 1994 and 2018. International Classification of Diseases version-10 diagnoses assigned to inpatients, outpatients and emergency department patients were collected from the Danish National Patien

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis is a condition where the amount of sweat released to skin surface increases due to the over-active eccrine sweat glands. Hyperhidrosis causes considerable psychosocial distress in affected people. It affects the quality of life and leads to social anxiety disorders.
AIMS: No study has been conducted in our country to investigate the epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory data of patients with hyperhidrosis. In this study, we aimed to retrospectively investigate the clinical and demographic characteristics, causes of sweating and laboratory findings in patients tre

Shapiro Syndrome is a rare entity defined by the triad of recurrent spontaneous hypothermia, hyperhidrosis, and agenesis of the corpus callosum. Fewer than 100 cases have been reported so far and there are only few cases without a complete agenesis of corpus callosum ("Shapiro Syndrome Variant"). In this article, we report the clinical, electroencephalographic, and neuroimaging data of a patient with early-onset Shapiro Syndrome Variant. The case study describes a 4-year-old patient with episodes characterized by generalized hyperhidrosis, hypotonia, impaired consciousness, and hypothermia wit

We present a 57 year-old man presented with generalized hyperhidrosis and widespread, smooth, flesh colored papules on the torso and extremities.Histological examination from multiple biopsies demonstrated morphologic alteration of the eccrine glands with an apocrine phenotype, suggesting eitherapocrine metaplasia or the presence of "apoeccrine glands." The morphologic similarities between eccrine, apocrine, and apoeccrine as they relate to ourpatient's histologic findings are discussed. We consider secondary causes of generalized hyperhidrosis, which may also play a role in this patient's pre

INTRODUCTION: Oral anti-cholinergic medications reduce generalized hyperhidrosis, but the effectiveness of topical anticholinergic solutions on axillary hyperhidrosis is unclear. This study determines the initial effectiveness of 1% and 2% topical glycopyrrolate spray and compares this with Botulinum toxin type A injections for the management of axillary hyperhidrosis.
METHODS: In a non-randomized, consecutive patient, prospective questionnaire, treatment comparison study, 40 patients with axillary hyperhidrosis were allocated to one of four study groups (10 patients to each group): (a) 1% gl

Hyperhidrosis can be localized or generalized and may cause the patient significant discomfort. Localized hyperhidrosis is usually primary, often begins in adolescence and is partly based on genetic dispositions. As a rule it does not necessitate investigations for secondary causes (e.g. endocrine or neurologic conditions). Generalized hyperhidrosis is commonly associated with environmental or lifestyle factors, and sometimes physiological factors. In new-onset generalized sweating of unclear origin, it may be appropriate to consider secondary causes (underlying diseases, medications, infectio

Hyperhidrosis can be subdivided into generalized hyperhidrosis, with increased sweating over the entire body, and focal hyperhidrosis, in which the excessive sweating is restricted to specific parts of the body. Generalized hyperhidrosis may be either primary (idiopathic) or secondary. Secondary generalized hyperhidrosis may be caused by infections such as tuberculosis, hyperthyroidism, endocrine and metabolic disturbances such as pheochromocytoma, neurological disorders, or drugs. Focal hyperhidrosis may also be primary (idiopathic) or secondary. Frey's syndrome is one form of secondary focal

Oxybutynin is an anticholinergic drug with an emerging role in the treatment of hyperhidrosis. Several recent studies have documented that it is effective both in focal and generalized hyperhidrosis and shows universally good response among different groups of patients regardless of age, gender, and weight. The most common adverse event is dry mouth reported by almost all patients treated. The way this might affect long-term compliance and tolerability should be better investigated in the future.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis is a disorder that can impair quality of life. Localized treatments may be cumbersome and ineffective, and no systemic treatments have proven to be significantly beneficial.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness and tolerance of low-dose oxybutynin for hyperhidrosis.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. From June 2013 to January 2014, 62 patients with localized or generalized hyperhidrosis were enrolled. Oxybutynin was started at a dose of 2·5 mg per day and increased gradually to 7·5 mg per day. The primary outcome was defi

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis is a functional disorder characterized by increased sweating that can greatly impair quality of life due to psychosocial factors. It is most often localized (underarms, hands, feet) but can also be generalized. In this case, after eliminating an underlying cause, systemic treatment may be proposed. In this retrospective study, we report the benefits and adverse effects of the anticholinergic drug oxybutynin.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients treated with oxybutynin between February 2008 and October 2010 for troublesome generalized hyperhidrosis were recruited after

Postmenopausal hyperhidrosis is a form of secondary hyperhidrosis, and hormone-replacement therapy is a commonly used therapeutic option. However, some women do not benefit from this treatment, and oral anticholinergics are a logical alternative for reducing generalized sweating in these patients. Twenty-one patients were medicated with 5 or 10 mg of oxybutynin per day. After a 3-month follow-up period, efficacy was assessed with the Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS) and the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) was used to assess the improvement in patients' quality of life. The HDS
