Mapping the Evidence on Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and Folate Deficiencies and Their Potential Impact on Treatment Outcomes in Patients With Cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies, particularly of vitamin D, vitamin B12, and folate, are increasingly recognized as important, yet underexplored contributors to adverse outcomes in oncology care. These micronutrients are essential for immune regulation, DNA synthesis and repair, cell proliferation, and metabolic homeostasis, all of which are frequently disrupted in patients with cancer. Deficiencies may arise due to cancer-related metabolic changes, malabsorption, anorexia, and treatment-related toxicities, potentially influencing therapeutic response, treatment tolerance, survival, and

Premorbid obesity and weight gain velocity: Recovery related outcomes for adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa 1 year post inpatient admission.

This retrospective longitudinal study evaluated differences in weight related outcomes post-discharge from an inpatient eating disorder unit among 214 adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Atypical AN with and without premorbid overweight/obesity. Participants who had premorbid overweight/obesity were more likely to be male, Latino, have longer hospitalizations, and have a diagnosis of AN - Binge Purge type. Participants with premorbid overweight/obesity appeared to have lower relative weight velocity at the 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up assessments compared with participants without pre

Efficacy and toxicities of modified FOLFIRINOX versus gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel as first-line chemotherapy for unresectable pancreatic cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Modified FOLFIRINOX (mFFX) and gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel (GnP) are both recommended as standard first-line regimens for unresectable pancreatic cancer (PC). However, direct head-to-head comparative evidence remains scarce, and prior studies have largely failed to distinguish mFFX from standard FOLFIRINOX (sFFX). We systematically compared mFFX with GnP to evaluate their efficacy and toxicities. METHODS: We searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies comparing mFFX with GnP as first-line therapy for unresectable PC published between January 2013

Safety of benfotiamine as a Novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 and the bioavailability of benfotiamine as a source of thiamin in the context of Directive 2002/46/EC on food supplements.

Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on the safety of benfotiamine as a novel food (NF) pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 and on the bioavailability of benfotiamine as a source of thiamin in the context of Directive 2002/46/EC. The NF, which is produced by chemical synthesis, is proposed to be used in food supplements for adults at a maximum intake of 300 mg/day. The Panel notes that the identity of the NF has not been sufficiently demonstrated, including the possible presence of

Catamenial diabetic ketoacidosis in a rural area of Kananga, Democratic Republic of the Congo: a case report.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening acute complication of diabetes mellitus most commonly triggered by infection, metabolic stress, or inadequate insulin therapy. We report an unusual case of a young woman with type 1 diabetes who experienced recurrent episodes of ketoacidosis during the premenstrual period, suggesting a catamenial form of DKA. This case highlights the importance of considering hormonal fluctuations related to the menstrual cycle in diabetes management and in identifying factors of imbalance. The patient presented with abdominal pain, severe fatigue, and polyuria

Endorsement of Appearance-Based Societal Biases Differentiates Women With Current Anorexia Nervosa From Those in Recovery.

OBJECTIVE: Many people relapse following treatment for Anorexia nervosa (AN). Internalization of appearance-related societal biases, including weight stigma, idealization of thinness, and body self-objectification, is related to eating disorder (ED) onset and maintenance, but their association with AN recovery is unclear. METHOD: We recruited 425 women using Prolific: 136 with self-reported active AN, 143 who self-reported being recovered, and 146 controls with no ED history. They completed online measures of ED symptoms, internalized weight stigma, thin-ideal internalization, and self-object

Care approaches for people with longstanding eating disorders: a lived experience perspective on the need for recovery-fostering care.

People with longstanding eating disorders (EDs) are often conceptualised as 'treatment-resistant' when they are not currently benefitting from established recovery-focused treatments. This may encourage a shift from recovery-focused treatments to care approaches that for many individuals do not foster recovery. As a result, the present article offers an explicitly hope-holding and recovery-fostering care (RFC) approach that neither demands recovery nor abandons the possibility of recovery, whatever recovery may mean to the individual being cared for. RFC is guided by the following principles,

Connectivity-Guided Individualized iTBS of the Posterior Parietal Cortex in Enduring Anorexia Nervosa: Network-Level Target Engagement and Multimodal Response in a Single Case.

AIMS: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe, often enduring disorder with scarce biological treatments, largely unable to address its core implicit features: habit-like food restriction and body-experience disturbances. We report a single-case application of resting-state connectivity-guided intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) to the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), a hub for body representation, peripersonal space, and affordance-based action. METHODS: A 31-year-old woman with 12 years of treatment-resistant restricting AN, enrolled in an ongoing sham-controlled feasibility trial, underw

The role of a midwife during perinatal anorexia nervosa care: A narrative review.

Anorexia nervosa primarily affects women of reproductive age, with prevalence significantly increasing during pregnancy. Identifying optimal ways to support this population during the perinatal period is essential. This narrative review examines the role of midwives in perinatal care of women with anorexia nervosa, the challenges they encounter, and the effectiveness of midwifery-led care in this context. As part of this narrative review, a literature search was conducted across PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, and PsycINFO. Reference lists of included studies were screened for addition

Surviving the Storm: A Qualitative Study of Caregivers' Challenges in Family-Based Treatment for Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Family-based treatment (FBT) is the recommended first-line outpatient treatment for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), but places substantial responsibility on parents/caregivers. Although caregiver burden in FBT is increasingly recognized internationally, in-depth qualitative work situated in the NZ service context is lacking. This study explored how caregivers experienced participating in FBT for adolescent AN in NZ. METHOD: Twelve caregivers participated in semi-structured interviews between May and July 2025. Interviews were analyzed within an interp

Serologically supported pediatric brucellosis presenting with marked conjugated hyperbilirubinemia and marked systemic inflammation: A case report.

Brucellosis is a multisystem zoonosis that can mimic complicated bacterial infection in children. A 10-year-old girl presented with prolonged high-grade fever, jaundice, abdominal pain, anorexia and weight loss. The initial syndrome was managed empirically as an undifferentiated complicated bacterial illness because enteric fever and a hepatobiliary or intra-abdominal source were considered. CRP was 333.2 mg/L and total/direct bilirubin 7.24/5.21 mg/dL despite only mild aminotransferase elevation; ultrasonography showed hepatomegaly and nonspecific gallbladder-wall edema without biliary dilata

Cross-ancestry and cross-disorder transferability of polygenic risk scores for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Most genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been conducted in European populations, limiting the understanding of OCD genetics across populations. Here, we investigated the cross-ancestry and cross-disorder transferability of European-derived polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for OCD in the first East Asian OCD cohort. We performed a GWAS in 532 Korean OCD cases and 4376 controls, followed by PRS analyses using European GWASs for OCD and 10 psychiatric disorders. The European-derived OCD PRS was significantly associated with Korean OCD status (best-fit R

Development and early implementation of a brief 2-day multidisciplinary parent training group for paediatric ARFID: A feasibility and acceptability study.

OBJECTIVE: Many children with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) cannot access appropriate care, as existing individual and family treatments are scarce, long and costly. We developed a brief 2-day (12-h) multidisciplinary parent training group and assessed its feasibility and acceptability in routine care. METHOD: Single-arm implementation study in one tertiary centre. Parents of 18 children (5-14 years) with DSM-5 ARFID (17/18 sensory-based; non-French-speaking families excluded) attended two days three weeks apart. Guided by the RE-AIM framework, we assessed reach, feasibili

Listeria monocytogenes septicemia and fetal maceration in long-tailed chinchillas (Chinchilla laniger) in Argentina.

Listeria monocytogenes is a zoonotic bacterium widely distributed in the environment and capable of infecting a broad range of animal species, including humans, usually as a food-borne disease. Although listeriosis is well recognized across multiple hosts, information in small mammals such as rodents and lagomorphs remains comparatively limited, with most reports describing sporadic systemic disease. This study describes two cases of septicemic listeriosis with reproductive involvement in pregnant long-tailed chinchillas (Chinchilla laniger) from a breeding facility in Argentina. Both animals

[Clinical presentation and diagnostic procedures in canine hypoadrenocorticism].

ABSTRACT: Hypoadrenocorticism (HA) is a rare endocrinopathy in dogs that may occur in a primary form, characterized by a combined deficiency of glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids or isolated glucocorticoid deficiency, or in a secondary form with an isolated glucocorticoid deficiency. In addition, iatrogenic HA may also occur. The primary form represents the most frequent type of the disease. Clinical signs are variable and often nonspecific, ranging from lethargy, inappetence, vomiting, and weight loss to polyuria/polydipsia or acute, life-threatening adrenal crises associated with hypovol

Tissue-specific insulin sensitivity in anorexia nervosa: A cross-sectional positron emission tomography (PET) study in female adults.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) has been linked to both impaired and improved whole-body insulin sensitivity, but tissue-specific metabolic alterations remain unexplored. To address this gap, we studied 12 female volunteers with recently diagnosed AN and 13 healthy, lean female controls in a cross-sectional design using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with the glucose analogue [18F]FDG tracer under hyperinsulinemic conditions. We show that tissue-specific glucose uptake during hyperinsulinemia was higher only in the duodenum of individuals with AN, but comparable in other tissues, possibly in

Primary hyperparathyroidism in a 4-month-old German Shepherd mixed breed dog.

A 4-month-old female-intact German Shepherd mixed breed dog was evaluated for polyuria, polydipsia, oral discomfort, tachypnea, and pyrexia. Blood testing documented total and ionized hypercalcemia with an increased parathyroid hormone concentration. Computed tomography identified bone abnormalities of the mandibule and mild, diffuse pulmonary changes. Ultrasonography of the neck documented one mildly enlarged parathyroid gland that was surgically removed. Histopathology indicated diffuse chief cell hyperplasia. The ionized calcium concentration normalized within 7 days postoperatively.

Neural correlates and sex hormonal associations of impaired feedback-learning in adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa - a longitudinal fMRI study.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a somato-psychiatric disease that mostly begins in adolescence, involving endocrine changes including amenorrhea. It is difficult to treat as most patients have difficulties embracing change and thus, the disease often takes a chronic course. Underlying pathomechanisms including moderate neuropsychological deficits of learning and memory remain insufficiently understood. As learning and memory have been shown to be estradiol-dependent in healthy controls (HC), we conducted this assessment to investigate the impact of reduced estradiol in patients on verba
