Risk factors for severe acute malnutrition among children aged 6-59 months enrolled in the CMAM program at Al-Sabeen Hospital, Sana'a City, Yemen.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) remains a major public health problem among children under five years of age in Yemen. Evidence on factors associated with SAM in Sana'a City, particularly among children enrolled in community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) program is limited. The aim of this study is to assess factors associated with SAM among children aged 6-59 months at Al-Sabeen Hospital, Sana'a City, Yemen. METHODS: A facility-based frequency-matched case-control study was conducted among 194 children aged 6-59 months (65 cases and 129 controls). Cases were child

Central relaxin-3/RXFP3 signaling potently drives orexigenic behaviors and attenuates cisplatin-induced anorexia and body weight loss.

The relaxin-3 neuropeptide system promotes energy balance by increasing feeding behavior. Here, we investigate the behavioral mechanisms mediating the orexigenic effects of relaxin-3 and the therapeutic potential of relaxin-3 to combat metabolic disorders. We show that central and peripheral administration of relaxin-3 increases high-fat diet intake by increasing meal size in obese rats. Furthermore, we deleted relaxin family peptide receptor 3 (RXFP3) neuronally using RXFP3 fl/fl hSyn-Cre+ mice and show that neuronal RXFP3 is required for the orexigenic effects of relaxin-3. In addition, cent

Insufficient dietary intake and symptom burden are associated with early nutritional decline in hospitalized patients with cancer.

PURPOSE: To assess energy and protein intake relative to nutritional prescriptions in hospitalized patients with cancer and examine associations with appetite, nutrition-related symptoms, cancer-related factors, and changes in body weight (BW), anthropometric, and muscle strength indicators. METHODS: This longitudinal study included patients with cancer following during the first six days of hospitalization. Appetite and dietary intake were assessed on days 2, 4, and 6 using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Food Intake Visual Scale (FIVS), respectively. Reduced appetite was defined as mean V

Food restriction and hyperactivity differentially shape microglial Iba1 immunoreactivity across feeding-, cognitive-, and reward-related circuits in the activity-based anorexia model.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by marked metabolic, behavioral, and neurobiological alterations. Although neuroinflammation and microglial activation have been suggested to contribute to its pathophysiology, preclinical evidence remains inconsistent and appears to depend on the experimental conditions and brain regions examined. Here, we asked whether the two core components of the activity-based anorexia (ABA) paradigm, food restriction and voluntary hyperactivity, are associated with distinct regional patterns of Iba1 immunoreactivity across neural circuits involved in energy balance

Impaired psychosocial functioning and emotion regulation difficulties in eating disorders: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are severe mental disorders marked by disturbed eating and body-related concerns, leading to significant distress and impairment. However, psychosocial functioning in ED diagnoses remains understudied. Emotion dysregulation is a central feature of EDs, linked to their development and severity, and is known to predict functional impairment in other mental disorders. However, its role in psychosocial functioning in EDs remains unclear. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare psychosocial functioning across ED diagnoses, identify subgroups based on emotion d

Hematological alterations in adolescent girls with restrictive anorexia nervosa and secondary amenorrhea at the time of diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: : Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with chronic energy deficiency and endocrine adaptations affecting multiple organ systems involving bone metabolism and hematological homeostasis. However, early alterations in peripheral blood counts of adolescents with a clinically homogeneous AN phenotype remain insufficiently characterized. PURPOSE: : To examine the differences in blood counts and associated bone and endocrine parameters between adolescent girls with newly diagnosed restrictive AN and secondary amenorrhea and healthy age-matched controls. METHODS: : The study included 59

Temporal attentional bias to food stimuli in adolescent anorexia nervosa - an ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with substantial psychological and physical impairment and low recovery rates. A deeper understanding of its underlying mechanisms is therefore crucial. Cognitive models of eating disorders emphasize the role of attentional biases in the processing of food stimuli. However, only a few studies to date have examined the temporal dynamics of food-related attentional bias in adolescents with AN. METHODS: The present study combined the high temporal resolution of event-related potentials with the behavioral measure of the attentional blink in a rapid

The impact of infectious diseases on pig welfare: a scoping review.

This scoping review covers the welfare impacts of infectious disease and of interventions used to control infectious disease in pigs. Thirty-three scientific sources were included in the review after literature searches and selection processes, which was a smaller literature than anticipated. We found evidence consistent with infectious diseases causing behavioural and physiological alterations (increased body temperature, anorexia and reduced activity) consistent with a sickness syndrome in pigs. There was also more limited evidence that infectious disease in pigs causes a shift from pro- to

Intranasal neuropeptide Y suppresses food intake, reduces sucrose preference and increases circulating corticosterone in obese mice.

Obesity is associated with an increased risk of psychiatric disorders and altered reward processing. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) links metabolic state, reward-driven behavior, and emotional processing. We therefore tested whether intranasal (i.n.) NPY modifies high-fat diet (HFD)-induced behavioral alterations. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed HFD (48% kcal fat) or control diet for 8 weeks and assessed for anxiety-like behavior using the light/dark box test (LDT), self-care behavior using the splash test, and sucrose-directed ingestive behavior using sucrose intake and sucrose preference (SP). A Dicyanocobinamide Conjugate of the GLP-1R Agonist Exendin-4 Improves Glucose Homeostasis in Tumor-Bearing Rats without Exacerbating Anorexia and Weight Loss.

Cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome (CACS) is a prevalent and debilitating complication of malignancy, characterized by reduced food intake, loss of skeletal muscle mass, and severe metabolic dysfunction. Insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance are prominent features of CACS and contribute to worsened prognosis, yet treatment options that improve metabolic regulation without exacerbating anorexia are limited. Although GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists effectively enhance glucose control, their centrally mediated anorectic and aversive effects limit their use in cancer patients. To addre

Intensive Nutritional Interventions for Anorexia Nervosa: A Commentary on Ino et al. (2026).

Nutritional rehabilitation and weight restoration remain key components of the treatment calculus for individuals suffering with anorexia nervosa (AN). While voluntary oral food intake has long been the most frequently used and preferred method to accomplish this, it is not uncommon for these individuals occasionally to require alternative modes of refeeding, such as tube feeding or even intravenous feeding (total parental nutrition; TPN). In addition, there are definite, albeit rare, indications to revert to involuntary feedings and even restraints if the medical condition becomes unstable du

The impact of standardized meal plans for patients hospitalized for anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: Patients hospitalized with Restrictive Eating Disorders (REDs) often face heightened anxiety and challenges around meals. Inconsistent meal delivery and food choice complexity further complicate care. The study evaluated the tolerability of a standardized, no-choice meal plan by assessing nutritional supplement use via oral and nasogastric (NG) tube as proxies for meal completion. METHODS: A quality improvement initiative at a pediatric hospital replaced patient-selected meals with a 7-day rotating standardized meal plan. Adolescent patients could exclude up to five "dislike" fo

Changes in Comorbid Obsessive-Compulsive and Restrictive Eating Disorder Symptoms in Eating Disorder Focused Family Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Restrictive eating disorders (EDs) are highly comorbid with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and comorbidity is associated with worsened outcomes. However, it is unclear if (1) Maudsley family therapy (FT-AN) for restrictive EDs reduces comorbid OCD symptoms, and (2) if higher baseline OCD symptoms merely reflect higher severity or are associated with inhibited ED treatment. METHOD: Participants with restrictive EDs (Anorexia Nervosa, Atypical Anorexia Nervosa, or other specified feeding and eating disorders) received FT-AN as part of an intensive day program or outpatient serv

A randomised controlled feasibility trial of FREED-Mobile, a smartphone-friendly decision-making tool, designed to facilitate help-seeking in young people with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Early intervention increases the likelihood of eating disorder recovery but many young people delay help-seeking. We developed a smartphone-friendly, online decision-making tool to address this gap (FREED-Mobile (FREED-M)). AIMS: To conduct a randomised controlled feasibility trial of the FREED-M decision-making tool with 16- to 25-year-olds with a suspected eating disorder and no previous treatment for this. METHOD: Participants were randomly allocated to FREED-M or an active control in a parallel group, two-arm trial. Outcomes were measured at weeks 0 (baseline), 4 (post-interv

The roles of autonomous motivation and self-compassion on changes in eating disorder pathology across inpatient eating disorder treatment.

PURPOSE: Autonomous motivation and self-compassion may potentially influence outcomes in eating disorder treatment. Self-compassion may reduce criticism and shame, which have been implicated in the maintenance of anorexia nervosa. This study examined whether baseline autonomous motivation and self-compassion, and their interaction, were associated with changes in eating disorder symptoms in women with anorexia nervosa receiving inpatient treatment. METHODS: Participants were 56 women (M age = 23.8, range = 16-52 years) diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and admitted to an inpatient eating disord

Clinical and Laboratory Predictors for Differentiating Visceral Leishmaniasis from Hematological Malignancies in Adults with Pancytopenia.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a systemic, life-threatening zoonotic disease. VL and hematological malignancies (HMs) may present with overlapping clinical and laboratory features. The primary endpoint of our study was to identify the clinical and laboratory parameters for differentiating VL from HMs in adult patients with pancytopenia. The secondary endpoint was to evaluate the clinical and laboratory findings in patients with VL. In this 15.5-year retrospective case-control study, adult patients with pancytopenia who were diagnosed with VL or HMs at a tertiary referral hospital in Antalya we

Duration of untreated illness in eating disorders: a comprehensive systematic review and meta-regression.

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders (EDs) substantially impair physical health, psychological well-being, and social functioning. Shorter untreated illness duration has been proposed to be associated with better outcomes, though evidence for this relationship remains mixed. Nonetheless, delays in accessing treatment remain common and contribute to prolonged suffering and risk of lasting harm. This study aimed to estimate the duration of untreated eating disorder (DUED) and examine potential moderators. METHODS: A PRISMA 2020-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted. Severe necrotizing sialometaplasia progressing to palatonasal fistula in a patient characterized by habitual self-induced vomiting: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Self-induced vomiting (SIV) in patients with eating disorders exposes the oral cavity to repeated chemical and mechanical insults, leading to various oral complications. Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) is one such complication; however, most cases resolve spontaneously and follow a benign course without requiring surgical intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: A woman in her twenties with a long history of an eating disorder characterized by habitual SIV developed NS of the hard palate. Unlike the usual benign course, the lesion failed to heal spontaneously and progressed to a palatona
