Primary hyperparathyroidism in a 4-month-old German Shepherd mixed breed dog.

A 4-month-old female-intact German Shepherd mixed breed dog was evaluated for polyuria, polydipsia, oral discomfort, tachypnea, and pyrexia. Blood testing documented total and ionized hypercalcemia with an increased parathyroid hormone concentration. Computed tomography identified bone abnormalities of the mandibule and mild, diffuse pulmonary changes. Ultrasonography of the neck documented one mildly enlarged parathyroid gland that was surgically removed. Histopathology indicated diffuse chief cell hyperplasia. The ionized calcium concentration normalized within 7 days postoperatively.

Neural correlates and sex hormonal associations of impaired feedback-learning in adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa - a longitudinal fMRI study.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a somato-psychiatric disease that mostly begins in adolescence, involving endocrine changes including amenorrhea. It is difficult to treat as most patients have difficulties embracing change and thus, the disease often takes a chronic course. Underlying pathomechanisms including moderate neuropsychological deficits of learning and memory remain insufficiently understood. As learning and memory have been shown to be estradiol-dependent in healthy controls (HC), we conducted this assessment to investigate the impact of reduced estradiol in patients on verba

Appetite Loss, Inflammation, and Incident Functional Loss Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Aging is associated with both reduced appetite and increased inflammation. Whether and how these factors contribute to or exacerbate functional decline in older adults is unclear. METHODS: Data from 3073 men and women aged 70-79 years participating in the Health, Aging, and Body Composition (Health ABC) with reported appetite (good or poor) and inflammatory markers (Interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and C-reactive protein (CRP)) at baseline were followed for up to 6 years to determine if they developed Persistent Lower Extremity Limitation (PLL), defined as two con

[Diabetic ketoacidosis in cats: pathogenesis and diagnosis].

Diabetic ketoacidosis represents a serious complication of diabetes mellitus. In 1/3 to 2/3 of reported cases, diabetes mellitus is known beforehand. At presentation, affected cats are severely ill. Anorexia, vomiting and dehydration are the most common signs and affected cats usually present with volume depletion. Hepatic lipidosis and pancreatitis are frequent concurrent conditions. It is necessary for the disease to be promptly recognized and diagnosed in order to initiate necessary therapeutic measures as rapidly as possible in order to improve the prognosis of affected animals. Diagnostic

Case Report: Computed tomographic diagnosis of asymmetric bilateral uterine horn torsion secondary to benign uterine leiomyomas in a non-gravid dog.

Uterine torsion is uncommon in dogs and most commonly involves a single uterine horn. An 11-year-old intact female Pomeranian was presented with a 2- to 3-day history of abdominal distension, dyspnea, anorexia, vomiting, and oliguria. Clinicopathologic findings indicated renal compromise, electrolyte abnormalities, tissue injury, and marked systemic inflammation. Radiography and ultrasonography revealed large bilateral abdominal masses with peritoneal effusion, although the organ of origin could not be determined. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) demonstrated masses arising from both

Zinc Deficiency and Cyclic Feeding Behavior-From Animal Models to Potential Human Implications.

This narrative review synthesizes 5 decades of evidence on zinc deficiency-induced cyclic feeding in animal models, examines the underlying neurobiological mechanisms-with emphasis on recent advances in gut-brain axis signaling-and critically evaluates whether analogous periodic appetite fluctuations may occur in zinc-deficient humans. Zinc deficiency induces a distinctive cyclic feeding pattern in rodents, with food intake oscillating at an approximately 3.5-day period, as demonstrated by cosinor analysis, yet the mechanistic basis and potential human relevance of this phenomenon remain incom

Nursing-led predictive symptom management in oncology palliative care: Using laboratory indicators and clinical judgment to improve patient quality of life: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer on palliative treatment often have dynamic and multidimensional symptoms like pain, fatigue, anorexia, cognitive changes, and emotional distress that significantly impact functional capacity and quality of life. Traditional symptom management is largely reactive, based on patient self-report or clinician recognition after deterioration, leading to delayed interventions and avoidable suffering. AIM: The aim of this systematic review was to review the evidence on nurse-led predictive symptom-management strategies in oncology palliative care, with a focus on the

Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar State As the Initial Presentation of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in an Adolescent: A Case Report.

Hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS) is a rare but life-threatening hyperglycemic emergency in children and adolescents. It is characterized by severe hyperglycemia, hyperosmolality, and dehydration, with absent or limited ketoacidosis. Although more commonly associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, HHS may also occur as the initial presentation of type 1 diabetes mellitus in pediatric patients. We report the case of a previously healthy 13-year-old boy presenting with a three-week history of polydipsia and nocturnal polyuria. Initial evaluation revealed profound hyperglycemia (>1,000 mg/dL

Anterior cingulate cortex glutamatergic projection neurons modulate motion sickness susceptibility via a cortico-vestibular circuit.

Motion sickness (MS) is a prevalent and debilitating vestibular disorder with limited therapeutic options, yet the cortical mechanisms governing individual susceptibility remain elusive. Using a biaxial rotation mouse model, we investigated the role of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in MS by integrating morphology, calcium imaging, electrophysiology, cell ablation, chemogenetics, and optogenetics. Biaxial rotation induced hypothermia, anorexia, taste avoidance, locomotor hypoactivity, and gait incoordination. ACC pyramidal neurons exhibited enhanced activation and increased intrinsic exci

Exploring eating disorder voices: a qualitative study of individuals in recovery - Hearing ED's voice.

The eating disorder voice (EDV) has been increasingly recognised as implicated in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). However, research has predominantly examined anorexia nervosa (AN), limiting understanding across other diagnoses. This study aimed to investigate the lived experiences of the EDV across EDs, including AN, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, among individuals identifying as being in recovery for at least 12 months. Twenty participants completed semi-structured interviews or an equivalent written survey. Using Reflexive Thematic Analysis within an

Hormonal, biochemical and hematological changes in neonatal calves with sepsis induced by enteritis.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea is one of the most important problems seen in calves during the neonatal period. Sepsis caused by diarrhea is the main cause of death. In the case of sepsis, many hormonal, hematological and biochemical changes occur in calves. It is extremely important to evaluate these parameters together. AIMS: The present study aimed to investigate hormonal, biochemical, and hematological changes in neonatal calves affected by septic enteritis to obtain more information about the pathogenesis of sepsis. METHODS: The study included a sepsis group consisting of 40 calves aged 0-15 days

Parabrachial CGRP neurons mediate incretin-induced aversion and anti-aversion, but not anorexia or weight loss.

Incretin mimetics such as the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) liraglutide cause decreased food intake, weight loss, and aversion. Here, we examined the extent to which parabrachial calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) neurons contribute to these effects. Further, we assessed whether glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor (GIPR) agonism alters liraglutide-induced behavior and CGRP neuron activity. We found that liraglutide activates parabrachial CGRP neurons and that this is required for liraglutide-induced aversion, but not anorexia or weight loss. Additiona

Considering Autism in Binge-Type Eating Disorders: Broadening Beyond an Anorexia Nervosa-Focused Model.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Research on Autism in eating disorders (EDs) has historically focused on anorexia nervosa (AN), with comparatively limited attention given to binge-type EDs such as bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED). This review summarises emerging evidence on Autism in binge-type EDs and highlights key clinical and research implications. RECENT FINDINGS: Emerging evidence suggests that Autism is over-represented in BN and BED, although prevalence appears lower than in AN and research remains methodologically limited. Recent studies suggest that affective and reward-relat

Risk of Suboptimal Serum Sodium Correction According to Etiology in Severe Hyponatremia.

INTRODUCTION: Achieving an appropriate serum sodium correction rate in hyponatremia is essential but remains challenging. Given that the rate of correction in hyponatremia may vary by underlying etiology, understanding this relationship could help optimize clinical management, but it remains insufficiently explored. To address this, we aimed to evaluate whether the risk of suboptimal correction varies across different etiological categories. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included patients with severe hyponatremia (serum sodium level ≤120 mEq/L) at admission or during hospita

Metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing in Brucellar Spondylitis with Discordant Serologic Findings in a Non-Endemic Region: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Brucellar spondylitis (BS) is a focal osteoarticular manifestation of brucellosis with nonspecific clinical and imaging features. Diagnosis may be difficult in areas where brucellosis is not traditionally considered endemic, particularly when epidemiologic exposure is not identified and serologic tests yield discordant results. We report a case in which metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of vertebral lesion tissue provided additional microbiologic evidence for the diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old man presented with a 2-month history of fatigue, anorexia, nigh

Stigma as a Multidimensional Construct in Anorexia Nervosa.

Eating disorders (EDs) contribute substantially to morbidity and mortality in the United States, with anorexia nervosa (AN) having the second-highest mortality rate among psychiatric disorders. Stigma towards individuals with AN remains a barrier to treatment and engagement. Public and clinician misperceptions that AN is self-inflicted may contribute to blame, punitive treatment and poorer recovery outcomes. This study aimed to clarify the concept of stigma in the context of AN and develop a working definition by examining its use across disciplines. The Walker and Avant (2019) concept analysi

Attention orienting and inhibitory control across anorexia nervosa types: an antisaccade eye-tracking study.

Patients with Anorexia Nervosa experience difficulties in processing emotional stimuli within social contexts, which may contribute to some clinical manifestations of the disorder. However, it remains unclear whether emotional processing differs between the restrictive and binge-eating/purging types of AN. The study aimed to examine attentional biases towards emotional stimuli in restrictive, binge-eating/purging Anorexia Nervosa patients, and healthy controls. The sample included 28 restrictive (mean age = 16.5 years) and 20 binge-eating/purging patients (mean age = 25.5), and 29 healthy cont
