Association of Helicobacter pylori Coinfection With Tuberculosis Disease Severity and Treatment Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (HP) has immunomodulatory properties, but its relationship with tuberculosis (TB) severity and outcomes remains uncertain. We evaluated the association between HP infection and TB severity and explored factors associated with HP coinfection and TB treatment outcomes. METHODS: We enrolled adults (≥ 18 years) with drug-sensitive, newly diagnosed, bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB from two public clinics in Uganda. HP infection was determined using stool antigen testing. Severe TB was defined as GeneXpert cycle threshold < 16 or smear grade 3+ (microbiologi

Effects of metabotropic 2/3-glutamate receptor agonism and antagonism on activity-based anorexia model in mice.

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder disproportionately found in female teens and young adults. It is often resistant to treatment, has a significant chance of relapse and is more lethal than other eating disorders, such as bulimia nervosa or Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). There is no specific medication for the treatment of anorexia nervosa. Treatment consists of psychosocial means, psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and nutritional counseling. Medication is usually used for treating comorbidities such as anxiety or to decrease obsessive-compulsive tendencies. These medicat

Co-infection dynamics of Aeromonas jandaei and Edwardsiella tarda in Oscar fish (Astronotus ocellatus): Effects on pathogenicity, oxidative stress and immune responses.

Co-infections involving multiple bacterial pathogens represent an emerging challenge in aquaculture, yet their effects on host physiology and immune responses remain poorly understood. The present study investigated the pathogenicity and host responses associated with experimental co-infection of Aeromonas jandaei and Edwardsiella tarda in Oscar fish (Astronotus ocellatus). Following determination of the median lethal dose (LD50) for each pathogen, fish were challenged with single infections or a co-infection and evaluated for mortality, clinical signs, biochemical responses, and immune-relate

[MedPlate Method™ ‒ A visual approach to nutritional education in eating disorders based on the mediterranean dietary pattern].

Family-based therapy is the main evidence-based outpatient treatment for children and adolescents with eating disorders. In this context, nutritional education and family guidance can be carried out using different strategies, including calorie counting, exchange lists, and visual models and resources such as the Plate-by-Plate Approach®. The objectives of this study were to develop a visual resource adapted to the Mediterranean diet pattern and the eating and gastronomic habits of Spain, and to evaluate the energy and macro- and micronutrient contribution, as well as the methodology's nutriti

Spatial evolution of a cachexia-promoting microenvironment in pancreatic cancer.

Cachexia is a major cause of morbidity in pancreatic cancer, but the cellular circuitry linking tumor progression to systemic wasting remains incompletely understood. Integrating single-cell RNA sequencing, Xenium spatial transcriptomics, multiplex immunohistochemistry, bulk transcriptomics, and functional studies across human non-cachexia, pre-cachexia, and cachexia samples, together with mouse models, we define a cachexia-associated microenvironmental niche composed of SEMA4A+ tumor cells, AQP9+ macrophages, and LOXL2+ cancer-associated fibroblasts. Mechanistically, SEMA4A-associated signali

Stress induced hyperphagia in C. elegans as a genetic model for binge eating disorders.

Binge eating (BE) is often triggered by stress, dieting, and adverse environmental factors, and represents a common precursor to eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and BE disorder. Stress-induced hyperphagia captures core features of binge-like feeding and shares neurobiological substrates will BE disorder, making it a useful behavioral readout for dissecting underlying mechanisms. We used the genetically tractable worm Caenorhabditis elegans to examine how starvation and stress interact to drive feeding, quantifying pharyngeal pumping as a measure of food intake. Combined starvation

Desmoid-Type Fibromatosis of the Proximal Jejunum Mimicking Gastric Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor: Diagnostic Pitfalls in Determining the Tumor Origin.

INTRODUCTION: Desmoid-type fibromatosis (DTF) of the small intestine is rare and often mimics gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Its infiltrative growth can also make identification of the true organ of origin difficult. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old woman was referred with a suspected gastric GIST based on imaging and endoscopic US-guided fine-needle aspiration. Before the planned surgery, the patient developed anorexia and vomiting. Emergency CT revealed rapid tumor enlargement with duodenal obstruction. Urgent multi-organ resection was performed, including partial gastrectomy, jejun

Existing in a Battle Zone - The Lived Experience of Adolescents Subjected to Hospital Compulsory Care Due to Severe Anorexia Nervosa.

When untreated, anorexia nervosa is a life-threatening and disabling condition with the second highest mortality rate of all psychiatric disorders. In this study we undertook an in-depth exploration of adolescent girls' experience of inpatient compulsory care due to severe anorexia nervosa, aiming to better understand the complexity of the disorder and facilitate improvements in care standards. We used Lindseth and Norberg's phenomenological hermeneutic approach and conducted in-depth interviews with seven girls with a mean age of 15.3 years who had experienced inpatient psychiatric care in a

Genomic and Pathogenic Characterization of Francisella salimarina Associated with Mortality in Fourfinger Threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum) in Taiwan.

In 2024, a mortality event affected farmed fourfinger threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum) in Pingtung County, Taiwan, resulting in significant economic losses. Affected fish displayed anorexia and lethargy, with internal lesions characterized by multifocal white nodules. Histopathological examination confirmed systemic granulomatous disease. Two bacterial isolates, designated F5 and F69, were recovered from internal organs and identified as Francisella spp. by PCR. Experimental challenge demonstrated that strain F69 was less virulent than F5, exhibiting a higher LD50 (5.6 × 106 CFU/fish vs

Momentary Temporal Associations Among Sleep Disturbances, Eating Disorder Behaviors, and Suicidal Ideation in Anorexia Nervosa Spectrum Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa spectrum disorders (ANSD) are associated with high chronicity and mortality, with suicidality representing one of the most common and clinically significant comorbidities. Sleep disturbances are prevalent in individuals with ANSD and have independently been linked to both eating disorder (ED) symptom severity and suicidal ideation (SI), yet their temporal role in maintaining ANSD symptoms and SI remains poorly understood. This study examined sleep disturbances as a potential shared, transdiagnostic mechanism contributing to daily fluctuations in ANSD symptoms and SI

Examining Behavioral Markers of Reward Processing Dysfunction in Individuals With Anorexia Nervosa and Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) are common in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), including those who are weight-restored. Dysfunction in reward processing has been proposed as a mechanism linking AN to STBs; however, little research has interrogated putative reward links between these phenomena. The present study examined behavioral markers associated with STBs in weight-restored AN using two reward-related decision-making tasks. METHOD: Participants included individuals with weight-restored AN (n = 33) with STBs (AN+STB, n = 19) or without STBs (AN-only; n = 14) and he

Pancreatic Reirradiation: A Multi-Institutional Retrospective Analysis of Feasibility, Tolerability, and Clinical Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: With improvements in systemic therapy for pancreatic cancer (PC), the role of radiation therapy (RT) to optimize local control has increased. While the tolerability and outcomes for RT for PC are well described, limited data exist on the feasibility and clinical impact after pancreatic reirradiation (re-RT). This study retrospectively reviews a multi-institutional experience of pancreatic re-RT. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 44 patients treated with pancreatic reirradiation at 2 academic centers between 2012 and 2025 was conducted. The primary study endpoint was local contr

New insights into the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and the translational approach to personalized therapy.

Osteoporosis is increasingly recognized as a heterogeneous syndrome rather than a single disease, driven by diverse pathophysiological mechanisms. Subtypes-including postmenopausal estrogen deficiency, age-related bone loss, anorexia nervosa, and GLP-1 receptor agonist-associated weight loss-exhibit distinct bone turnover, fracture patterns, and therapeutic responses. Recent studies have established bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) as a critical regulator of the marrow microenvironment in postmenopausal and age-related bone loss. Weight loss of various origins-anorexia, GLP-1 agonists, calori

Deprescribing Olanzapine After Cancer-Related Symptoms Resolve: Insights From A Two-Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Olanzapine is commonly used in oncology and palliative care to manage chemotherapyinduced nausea and vomiting (CINV), cancer-related anorexia, insomnia, and anxiety. As more patients transition into long-term survivorship, medications started during active treatment may continue well beyond their original purpose. With olanzapine, prolonged exposure can increase the risk of weight gain, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and other metabolic complications. Despite its frequent use, clinicians have limited guidance on when and how to deprescribe olanzapine in cancer survivors. CASE

Identification and Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa in Women With Perimenopause.

Disordered eating is a common problem that midwives will encounter as frontline primary care providers. Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a form of disordered eating that results in chronic starvation state, creating significant risk of morbidity and mortality to the patient. AN is traditionally considered a disorder of adolescence and young adulthood; however, recurrence and new-onset eating disorders (EDs) also occur during midlife, particularly during the menopausal transition. Hormonal changes, psychosocial stressors, and body image concerns may contribute to symptom emergence or relapse, yet EDs i

Clinical Phenotypes and Neurobiology of Youth With Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) Across Sex.

OBJECTIVE: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is an eating disorder characterized by persistent avoidant/restrictive eating unrelated to body image. Sex differences in clinical phenotypes and neurobiology of ARFID are understudied. We hypothesized that females with ARFID would have a greater frequency of the lack of interest and fear of aversive consequences phenotypes, higher levels of anorexigenic hormones, and greater fMRI activation in brain regions associated with cognitive control during a food cue paradigm. We further hypothesized that males with ARFID would have a greate

Shared and distinct genetic architectures of eating disorders and obesity: From monogenic causes to polygenic risk.

Eating disorders and obesity are severe health conditions arising from an impaired body weight regulation. Both are strongly influenced by genetic factors. Accordingly, obesity can be broadly classified as either monogenic, caused by mutations in a single gene, or polygenic, resulting from the cumulative effects of numerous variants, each exerting modest effects on body weight. Although the genetic architecture of obesity is relatively well characterized, novel mutations underlying monogenic obesity are still being uncovered, and the mechanisms linking polygenic variants to the phenotype are n
