Risk factors prediction, clinical outcomes, and mortality in COVID-19 patients.

Preventing communicable diseases requires understanding the spread, epidemiology, clinical features, progression, and prognosis of the disease. Early identification of risk factors and clinical outcomes might help in identifying critically ill patients, providing appropriate treatment, and preventing mortality. We conducted a prospective study in patients with flu-like symptoms referred to the imaging department of a tertiary hospital in Iran between March 3, 2020, and April 8, 2020. Patients with COVID-19 were followed up after two months to check their health condition. The categorical data

Αcute visceral cysticercosis caused by Taenia hydatigena in lambs: ultrasonographic findings.

BACKGROUND: Cysticercosis caused by cysticercus tenuicollis is a metacestode infection that affects several species of ungulates. It is caused by the larval stage of Taenia hydatigena, an intestinal tapeworm in dogs and wild canids. In the intermediate host, the mature cysticerci are usually found in the omentum, mesentery, and peritoneum, and less frequently in the pleura and pericardium. The migrating larvae can be found mostly in the liver parenchyma causing traumatic hepatitis in young animals. Most infections are chronic and asymptomatic, and are diagnosed at the abattoir. The acute form

Role of Neuroendocrine, Immune, and Autonomic Nervous System in Anorexia Nervosa-Linked Cardiovascular Diseases.

Anorexia nervosa represents a severe mental disorder associated with food avoidance and malnutrition. In patients suffering from anorexia nervosa, cardiovascular complications are the main reason leading to morbidity and mortality. However, the origin and pathological mechanisms leading to higher cardiovascular risk in anorexia nervosa are still unclear. In this aspect, the issue of exact pathological mechanisms as well as sensitive biomarkers for detection of anorexia nervosa-linked cardiovascular risk are discussed. Therefore, this review synthesised recent evidence of dysfunction in multipl

Cancer cachexia: an overview of diagnostic criteria and therapeutic approaches for the accredited practicing dietitian.

BACKGROUND: Cancer cachexia (CC) is a multifactorial syndrome characterised by ongoing skeletal muscle loss that leads to progressive functional impairment driven by reduced food intake and abnormal metabolism. Despite the traditional use of non-volitional weight loss as the primary marker of CC, there is no consensus on how to diagnose and manage CC. METHODS: The aim of this narrative review was to describe and discuss diagnostic criteria and therapeutic approaches for the accredited practicing dietitian with respect to identifying and managing CC. RESULTS: Available diagnostic criteria for

Malnutrition in cirrhosis: More food for thought.

Malnutrition is highly prevalent in liver cirrhosis and its presence carries important prognostic implications. The clinical conditions and pathophysiological mechanisms that cause malnutrition in cirrhosis are multiple and interrelated. Anorexia and liver decompensation symptoms lead to poor dietary intake; metabolic changes characterised by elevated energy expenditure, reduced glycogen storage, an accelerated starvation response and protein catabolism result in muscle and fat wasting; and, malabsorption renders the cirrhotic patient unable to fully absorb or utilise food that has been consum

Non-Renal Lesions of Uraemia in Domestic Cats.

Uraemia is a clinical syndrome caused by an increase in uraemia-associated toxins in the bloodstream as a consequence of intrinsic kidney or lower urinary tract diseases. Cats seem to be more affected by urinary tract diseases than dogs, particularly considering that chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most important conditions in cats. Considering the lack of information on the systemic lesions of uraemia in cats, the aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and clinical and pathological aspects of non-renal lesions in uraemic cats, with special attention to the differences

Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome: A Classic Presentation of a Rare Entity.

A 32-year-old female with a past medical history of constipation (predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD)) presented with a complaint of pain in the lower abdomen. She lost 20 pounds in three months with a current body mass index (BMI) of 19.5 kg/m2 (ref: normal level 18.5-24.9). Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen with contrast showed very little intra-abdominal fat, enlarged proximal duodenum, and decreased aorto-mesenteric angle of 15.40 suggestive of superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome. Per general surgery, the patient was managed co

Liver disease in obesity and underweight: the two sides of the coin. A narrative review.

PURPOSE: Malnutrition, whether characterized by not enough or too much nutrient intake, is detrimental to the liver. We herein provide a narrative literature revision relative to hepatic disease occurrence in over or undernourished subjects, to shed light on the paradox where both sides of malnutrition lead to similar liver dysfunction and fat accumulation. METHODS: Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched for publications up to July 2020. Articles discussing the association between both chronic and acute liver pathology and malnutrition were evaluated together with studies reporti

Psychological characteristics and childhood adversity of adolescents with atypical anorexia nervosa versus anorexia nervosa.

The assessment and diagnosis of atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN) is an ongoing challenge for clinicians. This study aims to examine psychological morbidity and exposure to childhood adversity in adolescents with AAN compared to adolescents with anorexia nervosa, restricting type (AN-R). This registry-based study compared 42 adolescents with AAN to 79 adolescents with AN-R on a variety of psychosocial measures at the time of presentation to a specialized eating disorder program. In contrast to AN-R, adolescents with AAN had more severe drive for thinness (p =.011), body dissatisfaction (p =.038)

Personalized networks of eating disorder symptoms predicting eating disorder outcomes and remission.

Enhanced cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT-E) is one of the primary evidence-based treatments for adults with eating disorders (EDs). However, up to 50% of individuals do not respond to CBT-E, likely because of the high heterogeneity present even within similar diagnoses. This high heterogeneity, especially in regard to presenting pathology, makes it difficult to develop a treatment based "on averages" and for clinicians to accurately pinpoint which symptoms should be targeted in treatment. As such, new models based at both the group, and individual level, are needed to more accurately refine

Weight bias and linguistic body representation in anorexia nervosa: Findings from the BodyTalk project.

OBJECTIVE: This study provides a comprehensive assessment of own body representation and linguistic representation of bodies in general in women with typical and atypical anorexia nervosa (AN). METHODS: In a series of desktop experiments, participants rated a set of adjectives according to their match with a series of computer generated bodies varying in body mass index, and generated prototypic body shapes for the same set of adjectives. We analysed how body mass index of the bodies was associated with positive or negative valence of the adjectives in the different groups. Further, body imag

Targeting all psychopathological dimensions in the treatment of anorexia nervosa.

Efforts to improve the prognosis of subjects with anorexia nervosa [AN] through the development of specific therapeutic interventions have yielded unsatisfactory results. AN can be perceived as a mental disorder that is clinically composed of disturbed psychopathological dimensions found in major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, and delusional disorder somatic type. Future treatment strategies of patients with AN might target these multiple psychopathological dimensions. Considering that each of these dimensions is known to be best treated with psyc

Esophageal Mucosal Bridge of Unknown Etiology Causing Dysphagia in an Elderly Female: Endoscopic Management and Literature Review.

Esophageal mucosal bridge is an elastic stretchable structure, connecting across the lumen, extending either obliquely or horizontally, more commonly seen in the mid or lower esophagus. It can be either congenital or secondary (acquired). Acquired ones are secondary to reflux esophagitis, corrosive esophageal injury, drug-induced esophagitis, radiation esophagitis, Crohn's disease, Mallory-Weiss syndrome, malignant tumors, and infections like candidiasis, HSV, CMV, or tuberculosis. We present a case of an elderly female, who presented with progressive dysphagia for 3 months, more commonly to s

"Now It's Just Old Habits and Misery"-Understanding the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on People With Current or Life-Time Eating Disorders: A Qualitative Study.

Background: Many aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic may make living with or recovery from an eating disorder (ED) particularly challenging. Understanding the processes which underlie the psychological and behavioral responses of people with EDs during this time are key to ensure tailored support in these unprecedented circumstances. Methods: People with lifetime EDs (n = 32) were recruited through social media from May to June 2020 during a period of strict infection control measures in the United Kingdom (i.e., "lockdown," "social distancing"). They completed open-ended questions in an online a

Eating disorders and the risk of esophageal and stomach cancers-A nationwide, population-based cohort study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown elevated cancer risk in anorexia nervosa but the literature on other eating disorders (EDs) is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the association between all EDs and esophageal, stomach, and other cancers. METHODS: We used a retrospective cohort design, based on a two-million randomized longitudinal health insurance dataset, a sub-dataset of Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. From all the potential participants aged 20 years or more, a total of 6,628 participants were enrolled, including 1,657 patients with EDs, with sex-, age-,

Restrictive eating across a spectrum from healthy to unhealthy: behavioral and neural mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Restriction of food intake is a central feature of anorexia nervosa (AN) and other eating disorders, yet also occurs in the absence of psychopathology. The neural mechanisms of restrictive eating in health and disease are unclear. METHODS: This study examined behavioral and neural mechanisms associated with restrictive eating among individuals with and without eating disorders. Dietary restriction was examined in four groups of women (n = 110): healthy controls, dieting healthy controls, patients with subthreshold (non-low weight) AN, and patients with AN.
