Cestode larvae of Anthobothrium sp. were collected from the caecum and stomach of the common squid Loligo vulgaris Lamarck, 1798 (Cephalopoda: Loliginidae) in Tunisian waters (Bay of Bizerte and Gulf of Tunis), with the highest prevalence recorded in the Gulf of Tunis (52.94%). These specimens were morphologically characterised and compared to previously described Anthobothrium larvae from other hosts. Molecular analysis using 28S ribosomal DNA (rDNA), combined with phylogenetic reconstruction (maximum likelihood and pairwise distances), revealed that the sequences cluster with adult specimens

Wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), yellow-necked mice (A. flavicollis) and voles (Microtus agrestis) from the British Isles and from the European mainland have been reported to carry a cestode referred to as Hymenolepis murissylvatici. However, based on the morphometrics of diagnostic characters, Prokopič (1967) showed that isolates of this species from wood mice were indistinguishable from a species parasitizing a range of birds, which he referred to as Variolepis crenata. Subsequently, Vaucher et al (2003) showed that this was not a valid conclusion. Here, we track the key nomenclature changes

Dogs are the definitive hosts of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.), the causative agent of cystic echinococcosis (CE) in livestock and humans. As canine infections are usually asymptomatic, early and reliable detection of active adult infections is essential for effective control and surveillance. In this study, two in-house sandwich ELISA assays were developed using purified polyclonal rabbit antibodies raised against E. granulosus s.s. soluble crude antigen (EgSCA) and a recombinant fibronectin antigen (rEgFN162). Experimental infection was established in two dogs (n = 2) by oral

Dendritic cells (DCs) require substantial metabolic reprogramming to mount an immune response against parasites. In the context of Echinococcus granulosus infection, parasite antigens can modulate host immune responses; however, their specific impact on DC metabolism remains poorly defined. We measured mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨM), intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and nitric oxide (NO) production in FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 ligand (FLT3-L)-derived DC (FL-DCs) stimulated with hydatid fluid (HF) or purified laminar layer (pLL) from E. granulosus. BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC), a common brain infection caused by Taenia solium metacestode larvae, is a major cause of acquired epilepsy. It is diagnosed serologically using the enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB), which detects antibodies against seven Taenia solium cyst glycoproteins. However, like many serological tests for NCC, EITB sensitivity is low for pauci-cyst infections. THIS STUDY AIMED: to improve the diagnostic performance of EITB by calibrating antibody binding based on immunogen equivalents of glycoprotein fucose content of each cyst glycoprotein.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic liver disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus (E.g) infection, characterized by hepatic fibrosis and liver necrosis. Ghrelin and its receptor GHSR have been proven to regulate the progression of hepatic E.g infection, and GHSR knockout inhibits infection progression. Nevertheless, the specific regulatory mechanism remains poorly understood.
METHODS: In this study, mice with hepatic E.g infection were intraperitoneally injected with ghrelin protein and the GHSR antagonist [D-Lys3]-GHRP-6 for 90 days, and the related molecular and pathol

BACKGROUND: Hepatic hydatid cyst (HHC) remains a significant public health challenge in endemic regions, causing substantial morbidity and placing a persistent burden on healthcare systems. While surgery is the primary therapeutic intervention, the high rate of specific postoperative complications, particularly biliary fistulas, necessitates a more strategic approach to clinical risk management and patient stratification to optimize resource utilization. This study aims to identify predictive factors for postoperative complications to guide clinical decision-making and enhance the efficiency o

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death, with an estimated 19.3 million new cases and 10 million deaths worldwide in 2020 alone. Approximately 2.2 million cancer cases are attributed to infectious diseases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Despite the apparent involvement of some parasitic helminths (especially trematodes) in cancer induction, there are also records of the potential suppressive effects of helminth infections on cancer. Tapeworms such as Echinococcus granulosus, Taenia crassiceps, and more seem to have the potential to suppress malignant cell development,

Extraparenchymal neurocysticercosis, caused by Taenia solium, is an uncommon form of neurocysticercosis involving the subarachnoid space and ventricular system. Clinical manifestations are heterogeneous, including seizures, meningitis, and intracranial hypertension, and are often associated with worse outcomes. Diagnosis remains challenging, as cysts may be difficult to detect on conventional imaging due to signal characteristics similar to cerebrospinal fluid, frequently leading to inconclusive results. We describe a patient presenting with a six-month history of focal seizures in whom the di

Echinococcus granulosus, also known as the dog tapeworm, causes echinococcosis or hydatid disease in humans. It is an anthropozoonotic and non-endemic disease. Hydatid cysts are most commonly found in the liver and lungs, but can occur in any other organ, including the brain, kidneys, bones, and peritoneal cavity. Isolated renal hydatidosis is an extremely rare condition, accounting for only 2-4% of all cases of hydatidosis, with its occurrence in children being even rarer. We are reporting a rare case of isolated renal hydatidosis in a 12-year-old boy.

Taenia saginata, commonly known as the beef tapeworm, is a prevalent zoonotic cestode with an estimated global prevalence of 60-70 million carriers. This parasite is frequently located in the gastrointestinal tract, and previous reports have described complications such as acute appendicitis, Meckel's diverticulitis, pancreatitis, cholecystitis, liver abscess, intestinal obstruction, and perforation. Intestinal perforation due to parasitic diseases is a rare complication. Surgical complications associated with T. saginata are uncommon, with few reported cases of bowel perforation. Here, we pre

Our objective was to study the effect of vitamin D3 (VD) on hepatocellular oxidative-nitrosative stress and pro/anti-inflammatory cytokines in relation to nitric oxide (NO) formation and NO synthase (NOS) levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). After T2DM induction by high-fat diet and a single streptozotocin injection (25 mg/kg b. w.), male Wistar rats were treated with/without VD (1,000 IU/kg b. w., 30 days). Oxidative stress/inflammation and NOS/NO were assessed by flow cytometry, RT-qPCR, western blotting, and ELISA. A 3.3-fold decrease in serum 25(OH)D3 was established in diabetic rats

BACKGROUND: Poorly cooked pork containing Taenia solium cestode larvae contributes to human cysticercosis, a neglected zoonotic disease. Pork is consumed by a majority of the Benin population, and the cooking of popular dishes may not be sufficient to destroy cestode larvae. This study's aim was to estimate the risk of allowing pork contaminated with Taenia solium cysticerci into the food chain.
METHODS: A stochastic risk assessment was developed in R to model the risk resulting from the three scenarios leading to contaminated pork being introduced into the food chain. The model was parameter

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) technology offers substantial advantages in parasite detection; however, we still know very little about its diagnostic value for Spirometra mansoni infection. In this study, mNGS technology was used to analyse faecal samples and blood samples from cats infected with S. mansoni, as well as tissue samples and blood samples from mice infected with the plerocercoid larvae of S. mansoni. Moreover, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was employed to validate the mNGS results. The diagnostic value of mNGS for S. mansoni infection was systematically evaluated

How parasites interact with their hosts at the molecular level is a central question in parasitology, yet identifying host pathways directly targeted by parasites is challenging because infections often have broad effects on host physiology. This difficulty is particularly pronounced in non-model systems, such as the interaction between the parasitic tapeworm Anomotaenia brevis and its intermediate host, the ant Temnothorax nylanderi, in which infection induces strong phenotypic changes. Here, we integrated host and parasite transcriptomes through a combined weighted gene co-expression network

Polyparasitism is frequently documented in cetaceans; however, the pathological consequences of concurrent multispecies helminth infections and their associated tissue responses remain incompletely understood. This study characterized multispecies helminth infections in two live-stranded dolphins from the Andaman coast of Thailand, a spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) and a pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), using integrated postmortem, parasitological, molecular, histopathological, and immunohistochemical approaches. Both dolphins harbored helminths involving multiple orga
