A case of Dipylidium caninum infection in a child from the southeastern Poland.

Dipylidium caninum is a common intestinal tapeworm of dogs, cats and foxes. However, it occasionally infects also humans. We present a case of D. caninum infection in a 2-year-old child living in the Subcarpathian province. The infection was asymptomatic in the first months. The symptoms of abdominal pains, sleep disorders, loss of appetite, hyperactivity and occasional slimy stools appeared later. Proglottids on the underwear, in water while bathing and mobile proglottids passed with the stool were also observed. Prior to appropriate diagnosis the child was treated with pyrantelum (Pyrantelum

A molecular survey on cystic echinococcosis in Sinnar area, Blue Nile state (Sudan).

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonosis caused by the cestodes of the Echinococcus species. Its life cycle involves dogs and other canids as definitive hosts for the intestinal tapeworm, as well as domestic and wild ungulates as intermediate hosts for the tissue-invading metacestode (larval) stage. The disease has a special impact on disadvantaged pastoralist communities and is listed now among the three top priority neglected tropical disease (NTD). Therefore, CE is a neglected disease even in high endemicity regions. This study aimed at investigation of the prevalence of CE in d

Primary hydatid cyst masquerading as pseudocyst of the pancreas with concomitant small gut obstruction--an unusual presentation.

Isolated retroperitoneal hydatid cyst is an exceptionally rare entity. Owing to vague and varied symptomatology, it is seldom diagnosed without puncture cytology or surgery. We report an unusual presentation of primary retroperitoneal hydatid cyst with concomitant small gut obstruction. Ultrasonography and computed tomography of the abdomen showed localized abscess or pseudocyst of pancreas. Preoperatively, ultrasound-guided puncture cytology of the lesion revealed suspicious hydatid pathology. The patient was examined and, peroperatively, the cyst masqueraded as hydatid cyst of pancreas along

[Infectious ventriculitis in relation with neurocysticercosis in Burkina Faso].

INTRODUCTION: Ventriculitis is an uncommon entity, which is defined as localized meningitis in the cerebral ventricles. It usually occurs in a context of immunodepression, where its presence may suggest primary brain lymphoma, certain viral infections including cytomegalovirus (CMV) and much more rarely, tuberculous meningitis. OBSERVATION: A 48-year-old immunocompetent male was admitted to the neurology department of the Ouagadougou teaching hospital with the diagnosis of infectious ventriculitis in relation with neurocysticercosis (NCC). The diagnosis was based on several arguments includin

Japanese encephalitis in two children--United States, 2010.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable encephalitis in Asia and the western Pacific. JEV is maintained in an enzootic cycle involving mosquitoes and amplifying vertebrate hosts, mainly pigs and wading birds. The virus is transmitted to humans primarily by Culex mosquitoes, which breed in flooded rice fields and pools of stagnant water and most often feed outdoors during the evening and night. JEV transmission occurs mainly in rural agricultural areas, but occasional human cases occur in urban areas. Japanese encephalitis (JE) in persons who have traveled

Primary bilateral intrapelvic hydatid cyst presenting with adnexal cystic mass: a case report.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has seriously threatened the human health. Growing evidence shows that COVID-19 patients who recovery will persist with symptoms of fibromyalgia (FM). However, the common molecular mechanism between COVID-19 and FM remains unclear. METHODS: We obtained blood transcriptome data of COVID-19 (GSE177477) and FM (GSE67311) patients from GEO database, respectively. Subsequently, we applied Limma, GSEA, Wikipathway, KEGG, GO, and machine learning analysis to confirm the common pathogenesis between COVID-19 and FM, and screened key genes for the

Vaccinia virus as a vaccine delivery system for marsupial wildlife.

Vaccines based on recombinant poxviruses have proved successful in controlling diseases such as rabies and plague in wild eutherian mammals. They have also been trialled experimentally as delivery agents for fertility-control vaccines in rodents and foxes. In some countries, marsupial mammals represent a wildlife disease reservoir or a threat to conservation values but, as yet there has been no bespoke study of efficacy or immunogenicity of a poxvirus-based vaccine delivery system in a marsupial. Here, we report a study of the potential for vaccination using vaccinia virus in the Australian br

Disseminated intracranial tuberculoma mimicking neurocysticercosis.

Intracranial tuberculoma and neurocysticercosis (NCC) are the most frequent granulomatous infections in the central nervous system. Here we report a 41-year-old man with disseminated intracranial tuberculoma mimicking NCC. The patient complained of relapsing vertigo and vomiting consistent with Bruns syndrome. Serum antibodies against cysticercosis were positive. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain showed multiple disseminated ring-enhanced lesions. An initial diagnosis of NCC was made based on clinical signs and MRI. However, during antiparasitic treatment, the patient exhibited fev

Relevance of neuroimaging in the diagnosis and management of tropical neurologic disorders.

The development in neuroimaging techniques has revolutionized the way neurology is practiced, including neurologic disorders in tropics. Some diseases occur exclusively, whereas some are more common in tropical regions. However, some are becoming increasingly prevalent in the developed world too, as a result of patterns of human migration and globalization. It is imperative to learn about the role of imaging in tropical neurology, which might assist early diagnosis and treatment and also add to the existing knowledge. Infections are more common in the tropics and require special attention in v

Antiparasitic therapy.

Parasitic diseases affect more than 2 billion people globally and cause substantial morbidity and mortality, particularly among the world's poorest people. This overview focuses on the treatment of the major protozoan and helminth infections in humans. Recent developments in antiparasitic therapy include the expansion of artemisinin-based therapies for malaria, new drugs for soil-transmitted helminths and intestinal protozoa, expansion of the indications for antiparasitic drug treatment in patients with Chagas disease, and the use of combination therapy for leishmaniasis and human African tryp

[Approaches to developing a procedure for mapping water basin regions, by using the parasitological criteria].

The structure of a parasite system is formed and its functioning takes place in qualitatively different environments. The aquatic environment serves as a source of new elements and modules, energy, and information for parasite systems. And the parasite systems, for their part, affect the physical and biological parameters of the environment. Many intestinal infections caused by pathogenic microorganisms generally characterized by an acute disease course are related to a water factor. Such are typhus, typhoids, dysentery, cholera, salmonellosis, virus hepatitis, and others. Many parasitic disea

Effectiveness of manual physical therapy in the treatment of cervical radiculopathy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa poly-parasite infections are frequently observed in children, and with poly-parasitism modulating immune mechanisms, mediated by cytokines and chemokines, are required to prevent overwhelming inflammation and host tissue damage. We analyzed in children co-infected with helminthes and protozoan parasites their cellular production of regulatory and pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in response to parasite antigens and allergens. METHODS: Intestinal and intravascular parasite infections were detected in stool and urines samples. The in vitro cellular cyt

Spatial and temporal distribution of the Asian fish tapeworm Bothriocephalus acheilognathi (Cestoda: Bothriocephalidea) in the Rio Grande (Río Bravo del Norte).

Recent collections of the Asian fish tapeworm Bothriocephalus acheilognathi in the Rio Grande have raised concern about the potential impacts on Rio Grande endemic and imperiled fishes. The objectives of this study were to determine distribution and definitive hosts of the Asian fish tapeworm within the Rio Grande drainage and to quantify occurrences and abundances. In total, 1,992 fish spanning 11 families were collected and examined for Asian fish tapeworms in the Rio Grande and the Pecos and Devils rivers. The parasite was collected from red shiners Cyprinella lutrensis, Tamaulipas shiners

Evaluation of ELISA and IHAT in serological diagnosis of proven cases of human hydatidosis.

Cystic hydatid disease (Hydatidosis) is the most serious tape-worm infection prevalent in the cattle and sheep raising area of the world. Hydatidosis in man (as an accidental host) is caused by infection with the ova containing larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. In the last decade, different techniques have been employed for sero-diagnosis of hydatidosis; as IHA, IFA, ELISA, CCLE (Counter Current Immuno-electrophoresis). This paper evaluated the validity of ELISA and IHA. Since whole hydatid cyst fluid was used as a source of antigen for serodiagnosis. Thirty surgical and pathological hy
