Assessment of Nutritional Practices of Mountain Runners before and during Competitions.

Mountain running, distinct from traditional road running, involves natural trails with significant elevation changes. This study aims to analyze dietary and supplementation practices among advanced and elite Polish mountain runners. Conducted from May to October 2023, this study included 36 participants (13 women, 23 men) aged 21-43 years. A custom questionnaire assessed nutrition two days before and during a competition, focusing on macronutrient intake, hydration, and supplementation. Statistical analyses were performed to compare advanced and elite athletes. Participants consumed an average

Total energy expenditure measured using doubly labeled water in adults with major chronic diseases: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Energy requirement assessment is a cornerstone for nutrition practice. The extent to which total energy expenditure (TEE; indicator of energy requirements) has been measured in adults with chronic diseases has not been explored. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to characterize evidence on TEE among individuals with chronic diseases and describe TEE across chronic diseases and in comparison to controls without a chronic disease. METHODS: A literature search using terms related to doubly labeled water and TEE was conducted in PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Embase. Eli

Evaluation of the Effect of an α-Adrenergic Blocker, a PPAR-γ Receptor Agonist, and a Glycemic Regulator on Chronic Kidney Disease in Diabetic Rats.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a globally widespread complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Research indicates that pioglitazone and linagliptin mitigate the risk of DN by reducing inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis. The role of tamsulosin in DN is less studied, but it may contribute to reducing oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. The protective effects of combining pioglitazone, linagliptin, and tamsulosin on the kidneys have scarcely been investigated. This study examines the individual and combined effects of these drugs on DN in Wistar rats. Diabetic rats were treated wit

Short-Term Zinc Supplementation Stimulates Visceral Adipose Catabolism and Inflammation in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Zinc (Zn), a fundamental trace element in human biology, exhibits pivotal roles in sustaining vital physiological processes and regulating metabolic homeostasis. Insufficient zinc intake has been linked to deleterious consequences on growth, reproductive functions, metabolic activities, and immune responses in both humans and animals. Oral zinc supplementation is usually performed to meet zinc requirement. Previous studies have shown that long-term supplementation of zinc in mice impaired AKT signaling and induced adipocyte hypertrophy in visceral adipose tissue. METHODS: The pres

Dietary glycation compounds - implications for human health.

The term "glycation compounds" comprises a wide range of structurally diverse compounds that are formed endogenously and in food via the Maillard reaction, a chemical reaction between reducing sugars and amino acids. Glycation compounds produced endogenously are considered to contribute to a range of diseases. This has led to the hypothesis that glycation compounds present in food may also cause adverse effects and thus pose a nutritional risk to human health. In this work, the Senate Commission on Food Safety (SKLM) of the German Research Foundation (DFG) summarized data on formation, occurre

Balancing the benefits and risks of China's national salt iodization policy over 30 years using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs): a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Both insufficient and excessive iodine intake can lead to thyroid-related disorders. Although China has made progress in eliminating iodine deficiency over the past few decades, the incidence of thyroid cancer is increasing. Currently, there is a lack of relevant research on the tradeoff between the benefits and risks of salt iodization in China. In this study, we developed a method that combines the total probability algorithm and disease burden to evaluate the appropriate amount of salt iodization. Following the principle of minimizing the comprehensive disease burden and using the metabolic

Children's water intake and hydration: a public health issue.

Optimal hydration is required for all physiologic functions and cognition. Children, especially younger ones, are particularly susceptible to dehydration, given their physiological specificities, in particular, their renal immaturity and relatively large skin surface in early life, but also their dependence on adults and their greater propensity to develop digestive diseases leading to fluid losses. Mild dehydration consequences are dominated by their impact on cognitive functions, whereas more severe dehydration may endanger the health outcome. Studies on this subject in children are scarce;

Systemic Biomarkers and Liver Morphology in Rats during Chronic Low-Dose Toxicant Administration against the Background of Vitamin Deficiency.

Liver morphology, intensity of apoptosis, and activity of xenobiotic metabolism enzymes were studied in a chronic model experiment in rats receiving a mixture of 6 pesticides against the background of life-long diets with adequate and insufficient supply of water-soluble vitamins. The dose of each pesticide in the mixture did not exceed the acceptable daily intake (1 ADI). It was found that chronic exposure to low doses of anthropogenic toxicants in combination with permanent vitamin deficiency provokes a number of liver changes, such as increased apoptosis activity, cytochrome P450 system dep

Fluoride exposure and hypothyroidism in a Canadian pregnancy cohort.

BACKGROUND: While fluoride can have thyroid-disrupting effects, associations between low-level fluoride exposure and thyroid conditions remain unclear, especially during pregnancy when insufficient thyroid hormones can adversely impact offspring development. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated associations between fluoride exposure and hypothyroidism in a Canadian pregnancy cohort. METHODS: We measured fluoride concentrations in drinking water and three dilution-corrected urine samples and estimated fluoride intake based on self-reported beverage consumption. We classified women enrolled in the Materna

Iodine Deficiency and Iodine Prophylaxis: An Overview and Update.

The thyroid gland requires iodine to synthesize thyroid hormones, and iodine deficiency results in the inadequate production of thyroxine and related thyroid, metabolic, developmental, and reproductive disorders. Iodine requirements are higher in infants, children, and during pregnancy and lactation than in adult men and non-pregnant women. Iodine is available in a wide range of foods and water and is susceptible to almost complete gastric and duodenal absorption as an iodide ion. A healthy diet usually provides a daily iodine consumption not exceeding 50% of the recommended intake. Iodine sup

Characteristics and properties of a polysaccharide isolated from Wolfiporia cocos as potential dietary supplement for IBS.

INTRODUCTION: As low FODMAP (Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) diet therapy is recommended for most of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) patients, the consequent insufficient of dietary fibers (DFs) intake exert an adverse impact on intestinal health. It is necessary to find suitable DFs for IBS patients. METHODS: This study extracted a water-insoluble polysaccharide from Wolfiporia cocos (WIP) by alkali-extraction and acid-precipitation method. Its molecular weight was detected by high performance gel permeation chromatography (HPGPC) analysis. The struct

Gut microbiota and cognitive development in infant mice: Quantity and source of potable water.

Not only the water quantity consumed but also the source of drinking water has been considered for their health benefits, but there is limited evidence. We aimed to determine whether the amount and type of drinking water affect physiological and biological functions, including brain function, by confirming how it affects gut microbiota which has an important regulatory role in host physiology. Three-week-old infant mice were subjected to 1) a water restriction experiment (control group, ad libitum consumption of distilled water; dehydration group, time-limited access to distilled water [15 min

Metabolizable Energy Content of Breastmilk Supports Normal Growth in Exclusively Breastfed Icelandic Infants to Age 6 Months.

BACKGROUND: Neither the global population nor individual countries have reached the World Health Organization (WHO) target of ≥50% of infants exclusively breastfed (EBF) until 6 mo. This may partly be because of the perceptions of insufficient milk and energy supply to meet rapid growth and development needs. OBJECTIVES: In a longitudinal observational study, we aimed to determine whether breastmilk energy content is sufficient to support growth during EBF until 6 mo. METHODS: A sample of 27 EBF infants was dosed with doubly labeled water (DLW) at 5.6 mo to measure body composition, breastmi

Effect of Non- and Low-Caloric Sweeteners on Substrate Oxidation, Energy Expenditure, and Catecholamines in Humans-A Systematic Review.

The use of non- and low-caloric sweetener(s) (NCS and LCS) as a means to prevent overweight and obesity is highly debated, as both NCS and LCS have been proposed to have a negative impact on energy homeostasis. This systematic review aimed to assess the impact of NCS and LCS on fasting and postprandial substrate oxidation, energy expenditure, and catecholamines, compared to caloric sweeteners or water, across different doses and types of NCS and LCS, acutely and in the longer-term. A total of 20 studies were eligible: 16 studies for substrate oxidation and energy expenditure and four studies f

Underestimated health risks: Dietary restriction magnify the intestinal barrier dysfunction and liver injury in mice induced by polystyrene microplastics.

Microplastics (MPs) have gained significant attention due to their widespread presence in the environment. While studies have been conducted to investigate the risks associated with MPs, the potential effects of MPs on populations with varying dietary habits, such as dietary restriction (DR), remain largely undefined. The sensitivity of the body to invasive contaminants may increase due to insufficient food intake. Here, we aimed to investigate whether dietary restriction could affect the toxicity of MPs in mice. Following a 5-week exposure to 200 μg/L polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs), DR-PSM

Triple Burden of Malnutrition among Children in India: Current Scenario and the Way Forward.

The triple burden of malnutrition (undernutrition, overnutrition and micronutrient deficiency) or TBM among under-five (U5) children is an increasingly recognised public health challenge. A literature search was conducted to identify studies published from 1976 to 2022, which had focused on information regarding different factors of child malnutrition. The findings were analysed and contextualised from policy and programmatic perspective. There is a high burden of various forms of malnutrition in India. Insufficient dietary intake and illnesses are immediate and most common causes of triple bu
