Resolving the identity of an enigmatic cestode of rodents and birds: Hymenolepis murissylvatici (Rudolphi, 1819) transferred to the genus Variolepis Spasskii and Spasskaya, 1954.

Wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), yellow-necked mice (A. flavicollis) and voles (Microtus agrestis) from the British Isles and from the European mainland have been reported to carry a cestode referred to as Hymenolepis murissylvatici. However, based on the morphometrics of diagnostic characters, Prokopič (1967) showed that isolates of this species from wood mice were indistinguishable from a species parasitizing a range of birds, which he referred to as Variolepis crenata. Subsequently, Vaucher et al (2003) showed that this was not a valid conclusion. Here, we track the key nomenclature changes

Spatial expression analysis and target prediction give insight into microRNA function in the model cestode Hymenolepis microstoma.

Tapeworms (class Cestoda) of the genus Hymenolepis are etiological agents of hymenolepiasis, the most prevalent cestode infection in humans, which especially affects children, causing a significant public health impact. Tapeworms have complex life cycles, undergoing morphological and physiological transformations that need precise control of genetic expression. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNAs that regulate gene expression post transcriptionally, with a prominent role in developmental processes. Previously, we described the microRNA (miRNA) repertoire of Hymenolepis microstoma, a validated la

Preclinical evaluation of Senna alata leaf extract against Hymenolepis diminuta: a promising natural anthelmintic solution.

BACKGROUND: Senna alata is widely recognized for its wide range of therapeutic benefits, including its antioxidant activity. Our previous research demonstrated its non-toxic nature in mice and its modulatory effects on the antioxidant system of the zoonotic parasite Hymenolepis diminuta. However, understanding the mode of action of S. alata during active parasitic infection is essential for evaluating its antiparasitic potential. This study aims to explore the in vivo efficacy of alcoholic leaf extract of S. alata against H. diminuta infection in a rodent model, focusing on both antiparasitic

Therapeutic Impact of Plant-Derived Extracts and their Silver Nanoparticle-Loaded Extracts on the Zoonotic Parasite Hymenolepis Nana Infection.

BACKGROUND: Hymenolepis nana (H. nana) is a neglected zoonotic cestode that commonly infects humans and is typically treated with praziquantel (PZQ). Due to concerns about drug resistance and adverse effects, this study explored the antiparasitic activity of aqueous extracts from Artemisia alba, Moringa oleifera, and Ceratonia siliqua, as well as their corresponding silver-nanoparticles (AgNPs)-loaded extracts, against H. nana infection. METHODS: Ten groups of male albino mice were used: a healthy control group, an infected untreated group, and six infected groups treated with the aqueous extr

Multi‑target mechanisms of paeoniflorin in inflammatory regulation: A network pharmacology (Review).

BACKGROUND: Children with clinical levels of conduct problems are at high risk of developing mental health problems such as persistent antisocial behavior or emotional problems in adolescence. Serious conduct problems in childhood also predict poor functioning across other areas of life in early adulthood such as overweight, heavy drinking, social isolation and not in employment or education. It is important to capture those children who are most at risk, early in their development. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is commonly used in clinical settings, to iden

Seroprevalence of IgG antibodies against measles in adolescents and adults from Metropolitan Lima and Callao, Peru, 2024-2025.

INTRODUCTION: The EndoFLIP (for its acronym in English: endoluminal functional luminal probe) is a system that measures in real time the compliance index of the gastroesophageal junction and secondary esophageal peristalsis, based on the principle of impedance planimetry. Although this technology is relatively new and its diagnostic usefulness is still being evaluated, its use in clinical practice is increasingly recognized, fundamentally in those patients where there is no conclusive manometric diagnosis of esophageal motor pathology, mainly esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction and ac

Detection of Oral Submucous Fibrosis at the Crossroads of Altering Nucleogeometry, Nuclear Spatial Distribution and Nuclear Molecular Abundance.

BACKGROUND: Pseudolymphoma syndrome (PLS) is relatively rare but can lead to death if there are extensive skin lesions, severe hepatitis, agranulocytosis and neutropenia. PLS may also give rise to harmful effects if misdiagnosed as malignant lymphoma and patients with PLS are treated unnecessarily with chemotherapy, because it may mimic histologically other lymphomas, including mycosis fungoides (MF). OBJECTIVES: To examine the clinicopathological and genotypic features of anticonvulsant-induced PLS. Patients and methods We retrospectively reviewed clinical, laboratory and histological findin

Case Report: Hymenolepis diminuta in an asymptomatic Ecuadorian child.

BACKGROUND: The cestode Hymenolepis diminuta is a cosmopolitan parasite, which in the adult stage is usually found in the small intestine of rats and accidentally in humans. CASE REPORT: We describe the finding of eggs of this parasite in an asymptomatic 3-year-old child. The child had extremely high IgE values of 1,376 IU/ml. After receiving treatment with Albendazole suspension 400mg/20mL, on the 10th day post-treatment, he showed no H. diminuta eggs in his fecal matter. CONCLUSIONS: Detailed morphological review of Hymenolepis nana-like eggs is recommended to distinguish them from H. dimi

VOLATILES IN FECES OF RATS INFECTED WITH THE TAPEWORM HYMENOLEPIS DIMINUTA.

It has been known for over 25 yr that feces from rats infected with the tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta are more attractive to tenebrionid beetle intermediate hosts than feces from uninfected rats. Although it has been demonstrated that a volatile chemical (or chemicals) in infected rat feces attracts the intermediate host Tribolium confusum, the volatile chemical(s) have never been identified. This study aimed to identify and compare the volatiles in the feces of rats before and after infection with H. diminuta. Four 8-wk-old female Sprague Dawley rats were infected with H. diminuta.
