Recently, a novel autopsy finding in deaths by hanging was reported - adventitial hemorrhages of the descending aorta at the junction with the posterior intercostal arteries. The suggested mechanism of appearance is the axial traction of the body on neck compression but also agonal convulsion-related repetitive spine hyperextension, leading to stretching and tearing of the adventitial blood vessels. So, they should appear in other deaths that share these agonal elements with hangings, such as epilepsy-related deaths, drownings, fatal electrocution or hypothermia. We report eight isolated, non-

BackgroundSustained total all-region (STAR) perfusion is an emerging technique that provides continuous perfusion to the brain, lower body, and heart with mild hypothermia. We hypothesized that using STAR perfusion would result in improved postoperative outcomes.MethodsThe 4 cohorts evaluated (total n = 105) included 1) STAR perfusion for aortic arch reconstruction (Arch w/ STAR), 2) STAR perfusion for aortic arch reconstruction with subsequent cardiac arrest for ventricular septal defect/atrial septal defect (VSD/ASD) (Arch/ASD/VSD w/ STAR), 3) hypothermic circulatory arrest (HCA) with cerebr

OBJECTIVES: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects millions annually, contributing to mortality and neurological deficits. The glymphatic system, the brain's perivascular waste-clearance network, has been implicated in injury mechanisms following TBI. This narrative review expands current evidence on the mechanisms of glymphatic dysfunction, imaging biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
METHOD: We conducted a literature search in PubMed to screen relevant studies on glymphatic dysfunction following TBI. Of 114 initially identified articles, 45 met the inclusion criteria. Following the exclusion o

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Dictamni Cortex (BXP), derived from the dried root bark of Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz., is a traditional herbal medicine widely recognized for its anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties, particularly in treating skin diseases.Although BXP inhibits mast cell degranulation, its regulatory effects on the pseudo-allergy receptor MRGPRB3 and its primary blood-absorbed active components remain unclear.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study investigated the in vivo protective effects of BXP against pseudo-allergic reactions, identified its absorbed constituents, and ev

Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are strongly associated with insulin resistance and chronic inflammation. Retinol-Binding Protein 4 (RBP4), an adipokine secreted by the liver and adipose tissue, has been implicated in metabolic dysfunction, with elevated circulating levels linked to impaired glucose homeostasis. Exercise is known to improve insulin sensitivity; however, its effects on RBP4 remain unclear. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the available evidence on the impact of exercise interventions on circulating RBP4 concentrations and to evaluate differences by exercis

INTRODUCTION: Hypothermic machine perfusion currently represents the gold standard preservation modality for kidneys retrieved from adult deceased donors, with reduced delayed graft function (DGF) rates and improved early transplant survival compared to static cold storage (SCS). To date, clinical experience with hypothermic oxygenated machine perfusion (HOPE) in pediatric kidney transplants (KT) setting remains extremely limited.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective analysis of pediatric KT recipients preserved using HOPE. Between November 2019 and December 2023, 129 pediatric

OBJECTIVES: Neonatal hypothermia has been shown to be commonly detected among late preterm and term infants. In preterm and very low birth weight infants, hypothermia is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Little is known about the clinical interventions and outcomes in hypothermic late preterm and term infants. This study fills this gap in the evidence.
METHODS: Single-center retrospective cohort study using electronic health record data on infants ≥35 weeks' gestation admitted to a newborn nursery from 2015 to 2021. Hypothermia was categorized by severity: none, mild (single

There is increasing clinical evidence for the protective effect of the hypothermic oxygenated perfusion (HOPE) treatment strategy in human donation after circulatory death (DCD) liver transplantation. HOPE treatment is routinely applied for 2 hours after static cold storage (SCS). This study aimed to determine the optimal timing and duration of HOPE treatment by comparing different HOPE treatment strategies in a porcine DCD liver transplantation model. Donor livers from Tibetan miniature pigs underwent 60-minute warm ischemia and were then randomized into 4 groups according to different preser

Despite growing evidence supporting the efficacy of veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) for accidental hypothermia (AH), few studies have assessed its real-world application. We aimed to describe the use and outcomes of VA-ECMO in AH patients using data from a multicenter registry. This retrospective study included adult AH patients from the Japanese accidental hypothermia network registry (J-Point registry) between April 2011 and March 2016. We analyzed patient characteristics, in-hospital data, VA-ECMO indications, and clinical outcomes for those who received VA-ECMO.

Postcardiac arrest (PCA) syndrome is associated with high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Prolongation of the QT interval can lead to life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is widely used to improve neurological outcomes in PCA patients, but its effects on the QT interval remain a subject of investigation. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of TH on corrected QT (QTc) intervals in PCA patients. A total of 48 patients (mean age 63.2 ± 11.3 years) who survived cardiac arrest and underwent TH were included. Standard 12-lead ele

Therapeutic hypothermia is a critical intervention in post-cardiac arrest care, yet the optimal cooling method remains debatable. This prospective, single-center study compared the efficacy of a novel craniocerebral hypothermia helmet with the Arctic Sun 5000 surface cooling system in post-cardiac arrest patients. Thirty-four comatose survivors of cardiac arrest were randomized to receive either craniocerebral hypothermia (n = 17) or peripheral surface cooling (n = 17). Target temperature management (32-34°C) was initiated within 30-120 minutes of return of spontaneous circulation and maintain

Intraoperative hypothermia is associated with various perioperative complications and an increased risk of mortality. This study aims to develop and validate a reliable risk model, the Intraoperative Hypothermia Risk Estimating Model (IHREM), for assessing the likelihood of intraoperative hypothermia in adult patients receiving different types of surgery and anesthesia. Data from 1815 surgical patients were collected, with 1521 used to develop the IHREM training set. Univariate logistic regression was utilized to evaluate the parameters included in the study. For the first time, parameters sho

There are many established strategies to target normothermia in the perioperative period; however, hypothermia remains a common occurrence and can have significant impacts on patient outcomes, unanticipated admissions, and postanesthesia care unit (PACU) throughput. This pilot study serves to shed light on the effectiveness of using high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) as an alternative to a Bair Hugger (BH). This pilot study compares 10 patients warmed to normothermia with HFNC in the PACU with 15 patients warmed with traditional BH. Patients in the HFNC group reached the goal temperature of 36°C 9

Hypothermia, defined as a core body temperature ≤35°C, significantly increases morbidity and mortality in mechanically ventilated patients across numerous care settings. Physiologically, the upper airway conditions inspired gases to body temperature and humidity, minimizing heat energy loss and preventing mucosal damage. Instrumentation, such as endotracheal intubation, bypasses this natural mechanism, leading to considerable heat and moisture loss, potentially exacerbating hypothermia risks in critically ill patients. Active humidifiers and heat and moisture exchangers represent common strate

Accurate species delimitation serves as a cornerstone for effective biodiversity conservation strategies, particularly for rare taxa where misclassification of taxa may lead to misallocation of limited resources. Callicarpa oligantha, one of only two plant species declared extinct in Guangdong Province, South China, was historically documented solely from its type specimen--a single individual collected in 1917 at Luofushan (Loh Fau Mountain). However, the morphological similarities with C. brevipes have long challenged the taxonomic status of C. oligantha. Following the rediscovery of the spe

Preclinical studies show that therapeutic hypothermia (TH) effectively reduces cerebral ischemic injury. In contrast, TH has not been consistently beneficial in clinical trials of stroke and cardiac arrest, perhaps from suboptimal dosing (e.g., delay, depth, and duration), among other factors. This systematic review aimed to find an optimal depth of TH from in vivo adult preclinical studies of global and focal ischemia. To study depth, without other confounds, we examined studies that compared ≥2 depths of TH versus normothermic controls. Our primary outcomes were infarct size (focal ischemia)
