A Multi-Institutional Retrospective Study of 21 Dogs Having Undergone Hypofractionated Radiotherapy for Adrenal Tumours (2017-2024).

Radiation therapy (RT) has emerged as a promising non-surgical approach for treating canine adrenal tumours. This multi-institutional, retrospective study describes clinical outcomes for 21 dogs having been prescribed a course of hypofractionated image-guided intensity-modulated RT (IMRT) entailing delivery of 25-35 Gy total in 5 fractions given over 5-15 days for an adrenal tumour. Diagnoses were based on imaging (abdominal ultrasound or computed tomography) and biochemical testing. All dogs had unilateral or bilateral irregular adrenal masses with evidence of vessel compression or invasion.

Ill-Defined Deaths in Slovenia: Implications for Mortality Data Quality and Burden of Disease Studies.

INTRODUCTION: Ill-defined deaths (IDDs) are deaths assigned non-specific or insufficiently informative causes that do not identify a distinct underlying disease or injury. They reduce the accuracy of mortality statistics. In Slovenia, the overall proportion, structure and distribution of IDDs have not yet been comprehensively evaluated. This study examined the most frequent IDDs and their demographic and regional patterns in Slovenia from 2010 to 2021. METHODS: Individual-level mortality data from 2010 to 2021 were analysed. Deaths assigned ICD-10 codes denoting vague/non-specific conditions

Immune Priming and the Risk of COVID-19, Influenza, and Other Acute Respiratory Infections: Insights From an N3C Cohort.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 and introduction of COVID-19 vaccines into immunologically naïve populations may alter the dynamics of other acute viral respiratory infections (viral ARIs) and vice versa. Competing forces, including viral interference, cross-reactive immunity, shared susceptibility, and immune dysregulation, may affect the risk. The potential net impact of various immune-priming events and their timing on the risk of viral ARIs is largely unknown. METHODS: Using data from the National Clinical Cohort Collaborative (N3C) COVID-19 Enclave, this retrospective population-

The effect of chronic total occlusion on outcomes following transcatheter aortic valve implantation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIM: The pre-procedural presence of chronic total occlusions (CTO) in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) could be a significant predictor of outcomes. This meta-analysis aims to investigate whether CTO presence significantly alters outcomes in TAVI patients. METHODS: A systematic search was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. After study selection, a random effect meta-analysis was performed. RESULTS: Seven studies with a total of 15,162 patients undergoing TAVI were included. There

A nationwide register-based cohort study examined the association between preeclampsia in mothers and the risk of kidney disease in their offspring.

INTRODUCTION: Women with preeclampsia often deliver preterm (under 37 weeks of gestation). Preterm birth is associated with an increased risk of offspring kidney disease, but whether preeclampsia is independently associated with kidney disease risk is unknown. Here, we conducted a register-based cohort study to explore associations between maternal preeclampsia and offspring kidney disease after accounting for preterm birth. METHODS: Using Cox regression, we estimated hazard ratios (HRs) comparing kidney disease rates, overall and by subtype, in offspring with and without exposure to maternal

The accuracy of administrative data in identifying pulmonary metastases: a population-based study in Northern Italy.

OBJECTIVE: Lung cancer remains a highly prevalent and lethal disease, with the majority of tumors identified at advanced stages. Screening with low-dose CT was shown to be effective in reducing mortality through early diagnosis. Administrative data are increasingly utilized in clinical settings and research for identifying metastatic lung cancer, yet their accuracy and limitations require thorough evaluation. METHODS: This study evaluated the use of administrative data to identify lung cancer metastases within the population-based cancer registry (CR) of Reggio Emilia by cross-referencing reg

Factors Influencing Hospitalization Among Older Adults in Tokyo's Emergency Medical Services: The Role of Cerebral Disease and Seasonal Variations.

BACKGROUND: The global acceleration of population aging, especially in developed countries, has led to increased demands on emergency medical services. In Tokyo, Japan's largest city, over half of all emergency transports involve older adults aged 65 and older, a figure that continues to rise annually. These patients often present with complex medical conditions, require intensive prehospital interventions, and have higher hospitalization rates compared to younger populations. Despite these trends, there is a scarcity of studies examining the characteristics of older adults patients transporte

A national cohort study examined the risk of severe infection and infection-related mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease with lupus nephritis in comparison to other chronic kidney disease etiologies.

INTRODUCTION: The co-occurrence of lupus nephritis (LN) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with an excess risk of infection. However, it remains unknown whether the infection risk differs between LN with moderate and advanced CKD (LN-CKD) and other CKD etiologies. METHODS: Using data from the Swedish Renal registry 2006-2021, we identified 14,128 patients (median age 68 years, 64% men, median estimated glomerular filtration rate 25 ml/min per 1.73m2) that included 317 patients with LN-CKD, 783 patients with anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibodies (ANCA) vasculitis , 8877 patients wit

Epidemiology and diagnostic challenges of fever of unknown origin (FUO) among adults: A multicenter retrospective study in Northern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Fever of Unknown Origin (FUO) is broadly defined as a fever with an unidentified cause despite a minimum set of diagnostic investigations. The variability of FUO etiologies across geographic areas, age groups, and decades makes diagnosis challenging and complicates the adoption of a standardized diagnostic approach. Global warming and changing interactions between humans, animals, and the environment are contributing to the emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic infections. Emerging Vector-Borne Disease (VBD) pathogens circulate in Northern Italy, but their prevalence and impact on

Descriptive and molecular epidemiology of leishmaniasis diagnosed from clinical samples in the United States, 2021-2022.

UNLABELLED: Leishmaniasis is a rare disease in the United States, with an estimated annual incidence of dozens of cases occurring primarily in travelers, migrants, and military personnel. True disease incidence is unknown, since leishmaniasis is not a nationally notifiable condition. Here, we describe the results of molecular leishmaniasis over a 1-year interval (September 2021 to August 2022) when our laboratory served as the primary national reference laboratory for molecular diagnosis of civilian leishmaniasis. We tested 218 specimens submitted from 36 states yielding 94 of the 186 (50.5%)
