Segmental Arterial Mediolysis: A Systematic Review of Clinical Presentations, Management, and Outcomes.

PURPOSE: To consolidate evidence on the clinical profile of segmental arterial mediolysis (SAM) and to identify independent predictors of unfavorable outcomes and mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE was systematically searched for SAM reports with patient-level data. Data analysis used χ2 or Fisher exact, Mann-Whitney, and Kruskal-Wallis tests and multivariable logistic regression, with sensitivity analyses across 3 subgroups. RESULTS: In total, 230 confirmed cases of SAM were included (mean age, 54.5 years; 65% men). Hypertension was the most common comorbidity (21.7%). Most pa

Association between cytokine levels and disease relapse in newly diagnosed childhood-onset primary nephrotic syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Although most pediatric patients with primary nephrotic syndrome (PNS) are steroid-sensitive, some develop steroid dependence and experience disease relapse. Therefore, identifying risk factors associated with PNS relapse is clinically important. METHODS: This retrospective study included 74 children with newly diagnosed PNS and 39 healthy children as controls. Patients with PNS were classified into relapse and non-relapse groups according to whether relapse occurred within 6 months after disease onset. Serum cytokine levels and peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets were measured usi

Case Report: Metagenomic next-generation sequencing diagnosed a rare case of sternal tuberculosis mimicking a malignant tumour.

This is a case report of a 17-year-old female patient who presented with a painless, palpable swelling on the anterior chest wall. Imaging studies revealed osteolytic lesions involving the manubrium and adjacent ribs, along with multiple enlarged lymph nodes, raising a high suspicion of malignant tumour with metastasis. An ultrasound-guided needle biopsy revealed the pathological finding of "granulomatous inflammation." Multidisciplinary consultation and clinical indicators, including a strongly positive purified protein derivative (PPD) test and markedly elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rat

Late progression of pediatric Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease to systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare, self-limiting lymphadenitis predominantly affecting children and young adults, often mimicking lymphoma or tuberculous lymphadenitis. Although it usually resolves spontaneously, KFD has occasionally been associated with autoimmune disorders, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). CASE: We report a six-year-old girl presenting with persistent cervical lymphadenopathy, low-grade fever, fatigue, and weight loss. Laboratory evaluation showed mild leukopenia and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, while autoimmune markers were in

Clinical Characteristics and Prognosis of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer with Coexisting Pulmonary Tuberculosis: A Retrospective Matched-Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) may coexist with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), yet the clinical implications of this coexistence, including its prognostic impact, remain understudied. METHODS: We performed a retrospective 1:1 matched cohort study of 132 patients (66 PTB-NSCLC cases and 66 NSCLC-only controls) diagnosed between 2017 and 2023. Cases and controls were matched on age (±5 years) and TNM stage. Kaplan-Meier analysis evaluated survival differences, with hazard ratios derived from Cox proportional hazards regression. RESULTS: Between 2017 and 2023, patients with simul

Development and Validation of a Preoperative Nomogram for Predicting Prolonged Hospital Stay After Spinal Tuberculosis Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors that affect prolonged length of stay (LOS) after debridement, bone grafting, fusion and internal fixation for spinal tuberculosis, and to establish and validate a prediction model. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 102 patients hospitalized for spinal tuberculosis at a single center from September 2017 to January 2024. Using the 75th percentile of length of stay as the cut-off value, a stay ≥13 days was defined as prolonged LOS. Univariate and binary logistic regression analyses were performed to identify ind

Sex Differences in Disease Activity Measures in Axial Spondyloarthritis and Their Association with Concomitant Fibromyalgia: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Analysis of a Saudi Cohort.

Background/Objectives: Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) was long considered a male disease, yet women often report higher disease activity; whether this reflects sex differences or comorbidity is unclear. In an under-studied Saudi cohort, we examined sex differences in disease activity and function and associations with fibromyalgia and body mass index (BMI). Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis of de-identified baseline data included 160 adults who met the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS) criteria at a single center. Between-sex comparisons used Benjami

Surgical and Functional outcome of Infective Knee Operated with Arthrotomy.

INTRODUCTION: Septic arthritis of the knee represents a significant orthopedic emergency, necessitating timely and effective intervention to avert irreversible joint destruction and potentially life-threatening systemic sequelae. Arthrotomy, involving open surgical drainage and meticulous debridement, continues to be the standard of care in cases with advanced infection, dense purulent collections, or where minimally invasive approaches such as arthroscopy are not viable. While this procedure is widely practiced, especially in resource-constrained settings, there remains a paucity of data rega

Myositis Ossificans of the Soleus Muscle.

Myositis ossificans (MO) is a rare condition in which abnormal calcification and bone formation develop within a muscle. It appears most often in adolescents but can also occur in younger children. Although it usually affects a single muscle, it can sometimes involve different parts of the body. We report a case of post-traumatic MO. A 16-year-old girl presented with progressive left knee pain and swelling 15 days after minor trauma, with a visual analog scale (VAS) for pain of 8/10 and nocturnal exacerbation. Examination showed a soft, mobile, tender medial knee mass with reduced range of mot
