Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Comparative Analysis of Clinical, Laboratory, and Imaging Profiles in Tuberculosis Patients Pre- and Post-COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: While the COVID-19 pandemic has understandably dominated global attention, Tuberculosis (TB) remains a persistent and formidable global health threat. Acknowledging the impact of COVID-19 on immune function and the decreased referrals of TB patients to medical clinics during the pandemic, we sought to assess the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of TB patients in two distinct periods: pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified 105 TB patients from the year preceding the pandemic and, during the pandemic, selected 72 TB patients

Giant Cell Arteritis in the Third Decade of Life: A Case for Expanded Clinical Suspicion.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA), also known as temporal arteritis, is the most common idiopathic systemic vasculitis in middle-aged adults, predominantly involving large and medium-sized arteries. We report an unusual case of a 34-year-old woman with a five-year history of migraines who developed symptoms, including headache, transient vision loss, jaw claudication, and a 5 kg weight loss over two months. Physical examination revealed scalp tenderness, with no other notable findings. Laboratory investigations showed an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) of 85 mm/hr and a C-reactive prote

Comparison of clinical features between patients with and without renal involvement in IgG4-related disease.

OBJECTIVE: The kidney is one of the organs most frequently affected in immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD). Early identification of IgG4-RD with renal injury by clinical features is a current challenge. There is a paucity of data regarding the clinical features of renal involvement in IgG4-RD. MATERIALS: Patients with the diagnosis of IgG4-RD with and without renal injury were included in the retrospective cohort study. Cox regression analyses were used to investigate the risk factors for disease relapse and to construct the nomogram model. RESULTS: From December 2014 to February 202

Unusual Serratia marcescens pleural infection in secondary spontaneous pneumothorax: a case report.

Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic gram-negative pathogen that causes pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and urinary tract infections, particularly in individuals who are immunocompromised. Although commonly associated with pulmonary infections, its involvement in pneumothorax-related infections is exceedingly rare. Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) is a life-threatening condition that can complicate underlying lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This case report describes a rare presentation of S. marcescens infection in a patient with SSP complica

Quantitative analysis of pathological findings identified clinical heterogeneity in nonspecific interstitial pneumonia with organising pneumonia overlap.

The pathological classification of nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) with organizing pneumonia (OP) overlap (NSIP/OP overlap) remains complex due to overlapping pathological features, and its heterogeneity is not well understood. We retrospectively analysed adult patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) diagnosed with NSIP/OP overlap via surgical lung biopsy. Patients were pathologically subclustered using an unbiased clustering method, and clinical, radiological, and prognostic differences were examined. Among 38 patients, two pathological clusters were identified: Cluster 1, cha

Stroke, Fever, and Clot Microbiology Analysis: A Case Report.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a rare but serious life-threatening disease, often presenting with highly variable clinical symptoms. Risk factors for this condition include valvular heart disease, age, medical procedures, dental procedures, and intravenous drug use. Patients with IE may exhibit valve dysfunction, heart failure, or neurological complications such as stroke, the latter being caused by an embolus originating from valvular vegetations that occlude more distal vessels in the cerebral circulation. Diagnosis is based on the modified Duke criteria. We report a case of a 20-year-old ma

Micropapular Cutaneous Sarcoidosis Confined to the Face: An Uncommon Clinical Variant.

Micropapular sarcoidosis represents an uncommon variant of cutaneous sarcoidosis, typically presenting with a sudden onset, often resolving without residual scarring, and generally favorable prognosis. Its resemblance to other chronic papular dermatoses makes diagnosis challenging, especially in cases with subtle or localized cutaneous manifestations. We report a case of a 36-year-old female who presented with gradually progressive, asymptomatic skin-colored, and erythematous papules localized to the periorbital and perioral regions over six months. Systemic symptoms were absent, and routine b

Evolution of Inflammation-Associated Coronary Artery Disease on Immunosuppressive Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation plays important roles in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). CASE SUMMARY: This case involves a middle-aged woman with few risk factors for atherosclerotic CAD but elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. The patient developed progressive coronary de novo stenosis and restenosis despite optimal revascularization and strict secondary prevention. Immunosuppressive therapy was administered without further revascularization, which was associated with no further progression but even regression of the coronary lesions.
