Serum constituents were analyzed in 350 pregnant women in their third trimester. Results were compared with those from a group of 65 non-pregnant women. Significant differences between the two groups were found for total protein, albumin, calcium, phosphorus, cholesterol, urea nitrogen, uric acid, creatinine, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase and aspartate aminotransferase. Grossly elevated alkaline phosphatase levels were found in 4 subjects from the pregnant group. The source of this elevation was the placenta and placental damage was the probable cause.

Serum levels of muscle enzymes including creatine phosphokinase (CPK) have been reported to be abnormal in hypothyroidism. Seven patients with increased thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and elevated CPK levels were followed during replacement by oral l-thyroxine or l-thyroxine plus triiodothyronine. Data in three patients demonstrate a fairly constant rate of fall in CPK with a half-time for disappearance of approximately ten to 12 days. The normalization of muscle enzymes often precedes the correction of elevations in TSH.

The concentration of alpha-amylase in blood rose significantly (Student's t-test) in seven normovolemic healthy subjects after they were given 30 g/m2 body surface area of hydroxyethyl starch 350/0.60 (HES 350/0.60, a new volemic colloid). Vitamins A, E and K were incorporated into turkey starter rations at normal (1 x ), 5 x and 50 x the National Research Council recommended vitamin levels and evaluated for their effect on histomoniasis in turkeys.
