A study of the value of serum enzymes in 184 patients with colorectal cancer has been performed. The enzymes studied were gamma glutamyltransferase (gammaGT), alkaline phosphatase (AP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), 5'-nucleotidase (5'-NT), glutathione reductase (GR), alanine and aspartate transaminases. In patients without liver metastases, elevated enzyme levels were found in 11-55% preoperatively. 5'-NT showed the least number of elevated activities, while gammaGT activities were increased in 29% and LDH in 55%. Twenty healthy male volunteers were divided into four groups for a period of recreational physical exercise. Standard blood chemistry determinations were made before exercise and on the two subsequent days. Creatine phosphokinase (CPK), SGOT, and lactic dehydrogenase levels were transiently elevated, but the change was considered significant only in the CPK level after certain types of exercise. Persons having these determinations performed should be questioned about recent physical exertion in the event of abnormal laboratory results.

Serial study of 72-lead precordial ST-maps, SGOT, and SLDH was done in 30 cases of acute myocardial infarction. During the last ten years, several clinical manifestations of Yersinia enterocolitica infection have been reported. Surgeons are especially aware of "the right iliac fossa syndrome", caused by mesenterial lymphadenitis and terminal ileitis. We suggest that Yersinia enterocolitica may also cause a clinical condition easily misinterpreted as cholecystitis, and accompanied by slightly elevated serum levels of ASAT, LD, AP and bilirubin.
