A case of seminoma in an abdominal testis is presented in which abnormal liver enzyme as well as elevated human chorionic gonadotropin levels were present which returned to normal after surgical extirpation of the primary lesion. A review of pertinent literature and implications of these unusual findings are presented.

Erythrocyte properties of patients with congenital hypoplastic anemia were compared to those of patients with transient erythroblastopenia of childhood. The MCV was less than 85 in all nine TEC patients studied and greater than 90 in all 11 CHA patients. Hemoglobin F concentration was elevated beyond the normal level for age in eight CHA patients and almost always normal in TEC. The i antigen score was more likely to be elevated in CHA than in TEC. This study was conducted to determine, on a prospective basis, the incidence of acute exertional rhabdomyolysis (AER) among recruits at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, Calif. Blood samples were taken from each of 337 volunteer recruits on each of their first six days of regularly scheduled training. In our studies on patients with head injury, it was noted that there are some correlations between their clinical courses and the urinary excretion of creatine (cr), creatinine (Crn), 17-ketosteroid and 17-hydroxycorticosteroid. We observed the high urinary excretion of Cr in patients with severe head injury while almost negative in a mild case. We reported those facts in 1974. A Caucasian male developed florid dermatomyositis documented by serum enzyme elevation, electromyography, and histology of skin and muscle. Serum enzymes, including creatine phosphokinase (CPK), aldolase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), decreased initially during high dose systemic corticosteroid therapy, although profound muscle weakness persisted. Subsequent elevation of serum LDH and SGOT levels during treatment provided a clue to underlying neoplasia. Primary hepatoma with widespread metastases was found at necropsy.

Acute renal failure developed in nine of 78 patients who were subjected to hepatic artery ligation for nonresectable and extensive malignant tumor of the liver. Plasma activities of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine phosphokinase (CPK), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were studied, along with hematological changes, in rats suffering from various degrees of experimental decompression sickness (DS). During a 1-year period, 7620 elective surgical admissions were given multiple laboratory screening (SMA-18) determinations. Of these, 11 healthy patients, aged 10 to 54, with a pretest classification of ASA 1 (no systemic disease) were found to have clearly abnormal elevations of the SGOT, SGPT, and LDH levels. The effect of active schistosomiasis on the activity of some serum enzymes of hepatic origin has been studied in 46 male Egyptian patients with S. mansoni infections.
