In 66 alcoholic patients, serum gamma-glutamyl-transferase (transpeptidase) (GGTP) activity was studied in relationship to other biochemical liver function tests and histological liver damage. Elevated serum GGTP activity was the single most common biochemical abnormality (74%) and, when present was accompanied by histological abnormalities in all but one case. In a retrospective study of the charts of 39 patients who had motor neuron disease we found that over 50 percent of patients had radiographic abnormalities of bone and over 20 percent had serum calcium concentrations out of the range observed in normal controls. Quantitative determination of LP-X, abnormal serum low density lipoprotein, was performed on the sera of 620 patients with jaundice in two medical centers, one in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and the other in Birmingham, England. The incidence of abnormal results in liver function tests was determined in 37 of 51 patients with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) or temporal arteritis. Fine-needle biopsies fo the liver were performed on 6 of these patients and the bile canalicular network and liver cytology were studied in the aspirate by enzyme-cytochemical methods. A 28-year-old female, who showed a floppy baby syndrome during early infancy, had a non-progressive proximal muscle weakness with easy fatiguability since childhood. Two muscle specimens biopsied at the age of 28 years revealed myriads of 1-3-mum wide abnormal spaces containing neutral fat in type I and type II fibers. Fifty cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, of whom 9 had multilobular cirrhosis, were observed regularly for a period of 3 years and various liver function tests, indicating cytolysis, cholestasis and cellular insufficiency were performed.
