The local graft-versus-host reaction (GVHR) following intradermal injection of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) in Lewis rats was examined in order to test the cell-mediated immunity (CMI) in 31 patients with renal disease and in healthy controls. It was found that patients with lipoid nephrosis (LN) in the nephrotic stage and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) had less mean lesion of the local GVHR and a smaller proportion with positive reactions as compared to normal subjects. Utilizing a newly developed solid phase enzyme immunoassay for the detection of anti-phospholipid antibodies, we found that 41.7% of sera from patients with active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) had the anti-cardiolipin antibody and 22.7% of sera were positive for the anti-phosphatidylinositol (PI) antibody. Using mouse hybridoma monoclonal antibodies to DNA from MRL/lpr and NZB X NZW (B/W F1) mice, the reactivity of anti-DNA antibodies to several phospholipids was analysed. The anti-DNA antibody which reacted with the common antigenic determinants on the phosphate-sugar backbone of nucleic acid could bind to the cardiolipin, but failed to bind to other phospholipids, including VDRL antigen. We tentatively conclude that the anti-cardiolipin antibody is identical with the anti-DNA antibody, but differs from the BFP reactor.

Treatment of mice with LPS at the time of priming with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) causes the preferential activation of virus-specific T suppressor (Ts) cells. X-ray films of the thorax in two levels were prepared of 15 children of 3-14 years of age who had not been BCG-inoculated, after the tuberculin test had shown a positive reaction. Besides bacteriology and bronchoscopy, tomography of the hilus and of the anterior mediastinum was performed to exclude hilar lymph node enlargements. In this manner, it became possible to disclose an enlargement of lymphatic nodes in four children in whom plain radiography of the thorax had not yielded any abnormal findings.

A broad spectrum of immunologic parameters was investigated in 13 cases of myotonic muscular dystrophy (MyD), including those for cellular immunity which has attracted little attention in the past. One was a 46-year-old woman having both MyD and a thymoma. This association between MyD and thymoma is probably coincidental without biologic significance. Elliptocytosis, multiple lipomatosis, and biological false-postive serological test for syphilis (BFPSTS) were found in a single individual. One hundred eighty relatives were tested for the three diseases: 74 were typed for seven blood group antigens, and 58 were typed for four electrophoretic enzyme markers. Likelihood analysis of the pedigree data confirmed independent dominant inheritance for elliptocytosis and lipomatosis. BFPSTS appears dominant, but the analysis was inconclusive. A highly statistically significant correlation was found between asbestosis and impaired responsiveness in skin reaction to intermediate and second strength tuberculin and SK-SD. Considering ANA incidence these antibodies were found with higher frequency in asbestos workers who lacked a cutaneous response to the recall antigens. In asbestosis cases peripheral blood lymphocyte profiles are also abnormal demonstrating low proportions of E-RFC. Moreover, MIF test results showed the impairment of this cytokine generation when lymphocytes were stimulated with SK-SD, PPD and PHA in asbestosis cases.

A 31-year-old black woman had acquired ichthyosis. Histologic examination of her skin revealed a sarcoidal reaction in the dermis. The diagnosis of sarcoidosis was supported by negative tuberculin (intermediate strength purified protein derivative) and Candida albicans extract intradermal skin tests; by a positive Kveim test; and by roentgenographic evidence of bilateral hilar adenopathy, paratracheal node enlargement, and diffuse pulmonary parenchymal changes. Sarcoidosis must be considered when acquired ichthyosis develops in a patient.
