Cysticercus tenuicollis in Chamois (Rupicapra r. rupicapra) in Germany: Historical Baseline Data, with a Compilation of Records of Taeniid Metacestode Infections in Chamois Throughout Their Range.

Recent publications have indicated an interest in Cysticercus tenuicollis, the metacestode (larval stage) of the canid cestode Taenia hydatigena, in wild ungulates, but occurrence in mountain ungulates appears to be largely ignored. Therefore, data of chamois from Germany, obtained between 2004 and 2006, were compiled and retrospectively evaluated. Cysticercus tenuicollis was found in 27 of 223 (12.1%, CI95 8.3-16.9%) of chamois examined. Infected chamois aged 1 to 15 years and had a low number of one to three cysticerci, which were recovered from abdominal cavity organs exclusively, most ofte

Cardiac arrest revealing an occult interventricular septal hydatid cyst in a child.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac involvement in cystic echinococcosis is rare, particularly in children, and interventricular septal localization may cause life-threatening arrhythmias. CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old girl developed sudden cardiac arrest during biopsy of a dorsal hydatid cyst. After prolonged resuscitation, transthoracic echocardiography revealed a 5.3 × 4.6 cm cyst within the interventricular septum. Computed tomography demonstrated concomitant hepatic involvement. Serology confirmed echinococcosis. The patient subsequently developed recurrent ventricular arrhythmias and complete atrio

Primary Isolated Intramyometrial Cystic Echinococcosis Presenting with Life-Threatening Anemia.

Cystic echinococcosis usually involves the liver and lungs, whereas uterine involvement is uncommon. A surgically confirmed case of primary intramyometrial echinococcosis in northern Kenya is described. A 29-year-old woman presented with severe anemia secondary to heavy menstrual bleeding. Ultrasound revealed a 12 × 12 × 14 cm intramyometrial anechoic lesion initially interpreted as a degenerating leiomyoma. An open myomectomy allowed for an intact excision without rupture. Histopathology revealed laminated acellular membranes and protoscolices consistent with cystic echinococcosis. Hepatic ul

Drug Repurposing Against Cestode Fatty Acid Binding Proteins Through Integrated Virtual Screening and In Vitro Validation.

Echinococcosis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis, the etiological agents of cystic and alveolar echinococcosis, respectively. These infections pose a significant public health burden, particularly in endemic regions. Cestodes lack key enzymes involved in lipid metabolism and must acquire lipids from their hosts. Fatty-acid binding proteins (FABPs), which mediate lipid trafficking and intracellular transport, have therefore emerged as essential and potentially druggable targets. In this study, we implemented an integrated vir

The establishment of a universal blocking ELISA for echinococcosis using immunoglobulin against a new conserved linear B-cell epitope.

Echinococcosis is a neglected tropical disease that poses a severe threat to global public health and socioeconomic development. Given its alarming global spread, there is an urgent need to develop accurate diagnostic methods to support targeted and personalized treatment. Echinococcus multilocularis Em18 has been demonstrated to exhibit the most prominent diagnostic relevance in the progression of alveolar echinococcosis (AE). In this study, six highly specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against the Em18 protein-designated 8G6F, 11E2E, 11E7C, 11E7E, 11E8C, and 11E10D-were generated using hy

Preparation of monoclonal antibodies against Echinococcus multilocularis CIP2A and development of blocking and sandwich ELISAs.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by the metacestode stage of Echinococcus multilocularis, is a highly lethal zoonosis. Its insidious progression frequently precludes diagnosis until advanced stages, and the paucity of effective early detection tools remains a critical impediment to disease control. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic utility of EmCIP2A as a target antigen and develop monoclonal antibody-based tools for the serological and non-invasive detection of E. multilocularis infection. Six monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were generated against EmCIP2A, a germinative cell

Quantitative Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound Characterization of Perilesional Perfusion and Its Association with CD34-Positive Cell Density in a Rat Model of Hepatic Alveolar Echinococcosis.

Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) is characterized by infiltrative growth and remodeling of perilesional host tissue, including microvascular changes. We investigated whether quantitative contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) could characterize perilesional perfusion and its animal-level association with CD34-positive cell density in a standardized rat model. Twenty female Sprague Dawley rats underwent ultrasound-guided intrahepatic HAE modeling and CEUS 10 weeks later. Peak enhancement (PE), rise time (RT), time to peak (TTP), wash-in rate (WiR), wash-in perfusion index (WiPI), and wash-in

Outcomes of Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery Compared to Open Thoracic Surgery for Pulmonary Hydatid Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Pulmonary echinococcosis, or pulmonary hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus larvae, presents a significant health challenge, particularly in endemic areas. While surgery is the primary treatment for viable cysts, the optimal approach for this remains under debate. There is a lack of comparative evidence comparing traditional open thoracic surgery (OTS) with minimally invasive video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to comprehensively compare the efficacy and safety of VATS versus OTS for pulmonary hydatid disease; it will expan

Untargeted LC-MS metabolomics reveals source-dependent metabolic remodeling of Caco-2 cells exposed to bovine hydatid cyst fluid.

Hydatid cyst fluid (HCF) is a biochemically complex parasite-derived mixture whose effects on host and cancer cells are highly context dependent. The aim of this study was to determine whether short-term exposure to bovine liver- or lung-derived HCF alters Caco-2 XTT-based viability/metabolic activity and to characterize the associated global metabolic changes using untargeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Caco-2 cells were exposed to HCF at 20-60 μg/mL for 24 h for XTT analysis, and 40 μg/mL was selected for untargeted LC-MS metabolomics. XTT-based viability/metabolic activ

Early-stage anthelmintic discovery: Integrating phenotype, target and mechanism.

Parasitic helminth infections impose major burdens on human and animal health, and increasing anthelmintic resistance reinforces the need for new drugs. Early-stage discovery remains constrained by the scarcity of novel, potent, selective and chemically tractable starting points, the limited predictive value of some experimental models, mechanistic uncertainty and insufficient capacity to sustain promising series through medicinal chemistry, safety and exposure studies. Discovery can begin through complementary routes, including target-agnostic whole-organism screening, screening of known-phar

Surgery and toceranib for renal cell carcinoma with caval thrombus in a dog.

A 14-year-old spayed female papillon dog was presented with hematuria and a right renal mass. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a tumor thrombus extending about 1.5 cm cranially from the right renal vein into the caudal vena cava (CVC), consistent with renal cell carcinoma and caval thrombus, with no signs of distant metastasis. The dog underwent open right-sided nephrectomy and CVC thrombectomy, using 2 tourniquets, with a total occlusion time of 12 min 13 s. Transient hypotension during surgery was successfully managed, and there were no major intra- or postoperative complicatio

Simultaneous surgical treatment of multiple abdominal echinococcosis and benign pelvic organ tumours: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis of the liver is a parasitic infection that poses a significant healthcare challenge in endemic regions. The majority of cases present with either no clinical signs or non-specific ones, making differential diagnosis difficult until after the operation. Preoperative diagnostics rely mainly on computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound. The usual treatment for liver echinococcosis involves an operation, such as percutaneous intervention, surgical resection of the cyst as well as surrounding liver tissue, or major liver resection, followed by prolon

Isolated pontomedullary hydatid cyst presenting with progressive bulbar and long-tract dysfunction: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial cystic echinococcosis is rare, and primary involvement of the brainstem is exceptional. Because brainstem cystic lesions often share overlapping clinical and radiological features, preoperative diagnosis may be challenging, particularly when the lesion is deep-seated and located near critical bulbar and long-tract pathways. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old woman from a rural area presented with a 4-6-week history of progressive dysphagia and worsening weakness of all four limbs. Neurological examination revealed quadriparesis and lower cranial nerve dysfunction, inclu

First report of Taenia arctos (Cestoda: Taeniidae) from brown bears (Ursus arctos) in Romania.

BACKGROUND: The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is an apex predator with significant ecological importance and serves as a valuable indicator species for monitoring parasitic burdens in forest ecosystems. Owing to its complex ecology and varied diet, this species may play a key role in the life cycle of numerous pathogens, including cestodes of the genus Taenia, such as the recently described Taenia arctos. Among the potential intermediate hosts for T. arctos is the moose (Alces alces), a species sporadically present in northern Romania, where its habitat may overlap with that of U. arctos. In this

The Role of Innate Lymphoid Cells in the Pathogenesis of Hepatic Echinococcosis: A Literature Review.

Hepatic echinococcosis (HE), a major zoonotic disease, remains endemic in pastoral regions of Western China, where its incidence is closely linked to geographical, livestock and sanitary conditions. The disease presents a significant clinical challenge due to the complexity of host-parasite interactions and a high recurrence rate. To date, the underlying pathogenesis and effective prevention and control strategies remain inadequately studied. Particularly, it is still unclear how innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) affect disease progression and therapeutic intervention. This review focuses on ILCs a
