Seroprevalence and Risk Factors for Taenia solium Cysticercosis and Taeniasis among Children in Nigeria, 2018.

Children are vulnerable to Taenia solium, a parasitic tapeworm causing cysticercosis (a common cause of epilepsy) and taeniasis. We sought to better understand T. solium prevalence and associated risk factors in Nigeria using data from a 2018 nationally representative household survey estimating HIV incidence. We used a multiplex bead assay to determine the seroprevalence of T. solium IgG antibodies to T24H (cysticercosis) and rES33 (taeniasis) for 32,494 children aged <15 years. Positive antibodies against each antigen were detected in children from all states, with an overall antibody seropr

Etidronate May Reduce Residual Calcification in Porcine Neurocysticercosis.

Residual brain calcifications that occur after antiparasitic treatment in neurocysticercosis (NCC) can serve as foci of enduring neuroinflammation and associated seizures. Etidronate, a first-generation bisphosphonate, has exhibited efficacy in reducing the formation of ectopic brain calcification. In the present proof-of-concept study, its effects on post-treatment calcifications were evaluated in 12 pigs naturally infected with NCC, confirmed via magnetic resonance imaging. All animals received albendazole plus praziquantel for 5 days, either alone (n = 6) or with etidronate (20 mg/kg/day fo

Residual and recurrent spinal echinococcosis: MRI and intraoperative correlation in two patients.

Spinal echinococcosis is a rare manifestation of hydatid disease with potentially debilitating neurological consequences. We present two cases of spinal echinococcosis: one depicting residual disease postsurgical decompression and the other representing recurrence after prior spinal hydatid surgery. Case 1, an early 60s male, underwent posterior decompression and laminectomy for cauda equina compression due to multicompartment extradural cysts. Despite surgical clearance, a single residual cyst was noted on follow-up MRI and managed medically. Case 2, a mid-20s female, presented 3 years after

A fatal case of complex hepatic alveolar echinococcosis.

Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE), a life-threatening zoonosis, poses formidable surgical challenges when involving critical vasculature. Herein, we reported the periprocedural management dilemmas in radical resection for advanced HAE. A 58-year-old female visited the outpatient department presented with HAE. Imaging examination revealed extensive invasion of the hilum, bile duct, and several hepatic vessels, as well as left adrenal metastasis. The patient underwent right trisegmentectomy with left hepatic vein reconstruction, auto-transplantation, and adrenalectomy, with intraoperative Do

Preparation and MR Imaging Study of a Recombinant Surface Antibody Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticle-EPC1 Molecular Probe for Hepatic Alveolar Echinococcosis.

PURPOSE: To establish a new hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) model, construct an EPC1 antibody-conjugated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION) molecular probe and evaluate the probe's efficacy in the targeted MRI of HAE. METHODS: Thirty C57 female mice (9-10 weeks; 17-22g) were used to establish an HAE model via hepatic portal vein infection. Twenty successfully HAE-modeled mice were randomly divided into a control group, which was given a simple SPION tracer, and an experimental group, which was given a complex SPION-EPC1 tracer. In addition, a blocking group (n = 5), in wh

Occurrence of autochthonous neurocysticercosis in Germany: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis [NCC] represents a severe manifestation of parasitic infection of the central nervous system [CNS] by larvae of Taenia (T.) solium, the pork tapeworm. Although it is one of the main causes of acquired epilepsy worldwide, endemic transmission in Europe has been largely eliminated, with only isolated autochthonous cases occurring. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old woman from a rural region in Saxony-Anhalt, Eastern Germany, with no history of travel abroad or contact with livestock or known tapeworm carriers presented with a first-time generalized epileptic seizure.

LAG3 constrains anti-parasitic response by effector CD4+ T-cell in early Echinococcus multilocularis-infected mice.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint molecules such as lymphocyte activation gene-3 (LAG3) play a critical role in modulating host-pathogen interactions during chronic parasitic infections; however, their functions in early infection remain poorly defined. Using a murine model infected with Echinococcus multilocularis (E. multilocularis), a lethal helminth causing alveolar echinococcosis (AE), we elucidate the stage-specific regulatory functions of LAG3 in CD4+ T cell immunity during early infection. METHODS: Echinococcus multilocularis-infected mice were employed as the experimental model. Flow cyt

[Alveolar echinococcosis in a pregnant bitch - a case report].

Alveolar echinococcosis is a significant zoonotic disease characterized by infiltrative growth of metacestodes in intermediate hosts. It is primarily located in the liver and is associated with a high mortality rate if left untreated. To the authors' knowledge, the present report describes the first case of alveolar echinococcosis in a pregnant dog documented in the literature.A five-year-old, unneutered female Labrador Retriever was presented shortly after artificial insemination with abdominal distension, polydipsia, and polyuria. Further examinations led to the diagnosis of alveolar echinoc

Mapping cystic echinococcosis in Italian cattle: A spatiotemporal analysis of surveillance data (2019-2023).

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, is a neglected zoonotic disease with considerable economic and public health impacts. In Italy, higher CE prevalence has historically been observed in southern and insular regions, but recent data on spatial and temporal patterns are scarce. While cattle are not a source of transmission, they serve as useful indicators of regional prevalence. This study assessed the spatial and temporal distribution of CE in cattle across nine regions of central, southern, and insular Italy from 2019 to 2023. A total of 4441 samples were

Cerebral sparganosis caused by spirometra sp.: A case report.

Cerebral sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection caused by plerocercoid larvae of the genus Spirometra. Due to its nonspecific clinical manifestations, diagnosis remains challenging in clinical practice. Here, we report a case of a 72-year-old female who presented with intermittent fever and migratory intracranial mass lesions over a seven-year period, accompanied by progressive cognitive decline and right homonymous hemianopia. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) analysis of cerebrospinal fluid identified Spirometra sp. The diagnosis was further confirmed through brain lesion biop

Giant cardiac hydatid cysts with haemodynamic obstruction and arrhythmia: a surgical case series in two Syrian children.

Cardiac hydatidosis accounts for less than 2% of Echinococcus granulosus infections. Despite Syria's high endemicity, paediatric cardiac involvement remains exceptionally rare and underreported. We report two Syrian children (aged 5.5 and 9 years) with giant interventricular septal hydatid cysts. Case 1 presented with significant hemodynamic obstruction, while Case 2 exhibited malignant ventricular arrhythmias. Both underwent successful cardiopulmonary bypass-assisted cystectomy with capitonnage repair and adjuvant albendazole therapy. These cases underscore (1) the life-threatening nature of

Molecular identification of cestodes from rodents in the Mazury Lake District region of Poland.

Rodents serve as hosts for many species of parasites, including cestodes, but the taxonomy of rodent-infecting tapeworms, especially in Central Europe, is still understudied. Therefore, the current study was conducted to identify larval and adult cestodes in free-living rodents from Northeastern Poland. The fieldwork was conducted between 2014 and 2023 in three forest sites. Cestodes were collected from five rodent species (Clethrionomys glareolus, Alexandromys oeconomus, Microtus agrestis, Apodemus agrarius and A. flavicollis, and were identified through morphology and by several genetic mark

Protoscolex Maturation in Echinococcus multilocularis Is Controlled by Host Genetic Factors Independent of Initial Development.

Alveolar echinococcosis, caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, poses a serious public health concern. This parasite requires rodents as intermediate hosts for protoscolex maturation in the liver and subsequent transmission to definitive hosts. We aimed to identify the host genetic factors controlling protoscolex development and maturation in congenic mice carrying susceptible DBA/2 genomic segments on a resistant C57BL/6N background. We assessed the hepatic protoscoleces and immune-related gene expression levels 16 weeks post-oral infection. All congenic strains developed protoscoleces; howev

Cystic echinococcosis (hydatid disease): current insights into epidemiology, diagnosis, therapy, and prophylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) poses a significant medical and socio-economic burden worldwide, particularly in highly endemic, low-income regions with resource-limited settings, where control efforts are hindered by limited access to diagnostics and appropriate treatment options. In contrast, low prevalence settings, such as high-income countries, often face challenges related to low awareness of the disease, which can lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatments including potentially harmful invasive procedures. Therefore, it is recommended that an interdisciplinary approach be

Synergistic effects of multifactor interactions on the transmission of Echinococcus spp. on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The severe endemicity of Echinococcus spp. on the Qinghai‒Tibet Plateau (QTP) necessitates the identification of key risk factors influencing its transmission and distribution in northeastern QTP sylvatic cycles, alongside multifactorial interactions within the "environment-host-parasite" system. Field monitoring, multi source remote sensing data, and geographic detector techniques were integrated to elucidate the coupling relationships between the distribution and dissemination of Echinococcus spp. and geographical environmental factors. Land surface temperature (LST) was identified as a crit

Unusual Multifocal Localizations of Hydatidosi.

Hydatid disease is a major public health problem in Mediterranean countries, North Africa (including Morocco), Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and certain South American countries, where agricultural and pastoral practices remain largely traditional. This parasitic disease results from infection with the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. Diaphragmatic involvement is rare, even in regions where the disease is endemic. We present the case of a 31-year-old patient who had previously suffered from hepatic and renal hydatid infection and who developed multifocal disease affecting the lung pare

Selective lung ventilation in pediatric pulmonary hydatid cyst surgery: a comparative analysis of operative efficiency and clinical outcomes.

PURPOSE: Selective lung ventilation (SLV) during thoracic surgery improves surgical exposure and prevents contamination of the contralateral lung. In pediatric pulmonary hydatid cyst surgery, bronchopulmonary fistulas complicate surgical visualization and repair, significantly increasing the risk of contamination. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of SLV in terms of operative time, prolonged air leak, reoperation necessity, and hospital stay duration in pediatric thoracotomy cases performed for hydatid lung cysts. METHODS: This retrospective study included pediatric patients under
