Since being targeted for eradication in the 1980s, global human cases of dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease; GWD) have been reduced by over 99.9% through interventions aimed at interrupting the life cycle of the causative parasite, Dracunculus medinensis. However, the burden of GWD in dogs is higher than in humans and other monitored mammalian host species, threatening eradication of GWD. Expanding on a previous clinical trial of flubendazole (FLBZ) in dogs in Chad, we conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial in which half of enrolled villages (N = 29) were assigned to receive FLBZ and

Home accident or physical abuse: Evaluation of younger children presenting with trauma, burn and poisoning in the Pediatric Emergency Department. Turk J Pediatr 2018; 60: 625-632. Most cases of physical abuse and neglect refer to pediatric emergency clinics, and these patients are diagnosed as only home accidents. Cases that cannot be diagnosed and managed correctly are again exposed to severe trauma and consequently, they may die. The aim of this study is to evaluate the physical abuse and neglect in children younger than three y

Dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease), caused by the parasite Dracunculus medinensis, is acquired by drinking water containing small water fleas infected with D. medinensis larvae or eating inadequately cooked aquatic animals. Efforts to eradicate D. medinensis, including the Guinea Worm Eradication Program (GWEP), began at CDC in 1980. In 1986, with an estimated 3.5 million cases in 20 African and Asian countries, the World Health Assembly called for dracunculiasis elimination in specific geographic areas; this goal was later expanded to global eradication. GWEP has been led by The Carter Cent

Dracunculus medinensis (Guinea worm; GW) is a parasitic nematode that causes dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease; GWD). The annual incidence of GWD in humans has been reduced by over 99.9% globally since the 1980s thanks to the implementation of complementary interventions. Dogs are now the primary hosts of GW and impede eradication efforts. The antihelmenthic drug, flubendazole (FLBZ), was suggested as a possible therapeutic intervention after it was found to be partially effective at reducing fertility of D. medinensis in experimentally infected ferrets. A 2019 clinical trial of FLBZ in Chad

We used morphologic and genetic methods to analyze subcutaneous worms removed from endangered Florida panthers and a bobcat in Florida, USA, identifying Dracunculus sp. PantanalBr and several Dirofilaria spp. worms. Dracunculus sp. PantanalBr had been previously reported in a domestic dog and a jaguar in Brazil.

Dracunculiasis, or Guinea worm disease (GWD), was targeted for eradication in 1986 after which, the annual incidence decreased by over 99.9%. As human cases of GWD near elimination, dogs have become the primary reservoir for the parasite and remain a challenge for eradication efforts. The high burden of GWD in dogs relative to humans highlights the need for therapeutic interventions in conjunction with behavioral interventions. Laboratory experiments in ferrets demonstrated that flubendazole is partially effective in inhibiting the infectivity of D. medinensis larvae. However, the implementati

Guinea worm disease is approaching eradication, with only 10 human cases reported worldwide in 2025, the lowest annual total recorded. Yet the final phase of eradication presents complex clinical and public health challenges that differ from earlier stages of control. Persistent animal infections, particularly in dogs, civil conflict, fragile health systems, financing disruptions, and the need for prolonged surveillance threaten progress at the point when global attention may wane. Unlike smallpox, Guinea worm has been driven to near-eradication without a vaccine, curative drug, or rapid diagn

Guinea worm, or dracunculiasis, has been targeted for eradication. Since the detection of the disease in animals, particularly domestic dogs in Chad, eradication efforts have become more challenging as animal infections perpetuate the cycle of infection and continue to put humans at risk. A wide range of community-based interventions is used to reduce infections, and the proactive tethering of dogs was introduced in 2020 to aid in the eradication efforts. This approach aims to contain dogs to prevent them from infecting water sources and to minimize exposure to water sources harboring infectiv

Dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease) is a parasitic infection caused by Dracunculus medinensis, now nearing global eradication. We report a rare case from a nonendemic region involving a 75-year-old woman with a 10-day history of dull, radiating left hip pain and intermittent discomfort for 2 months. Examination revealed localized tenderness, mild muscle weakness, and restricted hip mobility. Laboratory results were normal. Pelvic radiography and computed tomography demonstrated dense, serpentine intramuscular calcifications along the left adductor muscles, highly suggestive of a calcified D.

Chad has seen a considerable reduction in cases of Guinea worm disease (or dracunculiasis) in domestic dogs in recent years. Tethering of dogs and application of Abate® larvicide to water sources appear to have contributed to this progress, but with 767 reported dog cases in 2021, accelerating elimination of the disease in Chad may require additional tools. We investigate the potential benefits of a hypothetical diagnostic test that could be capable of detecting prepatent infections in dogs. We adapt an agent-based simulation model for forecasting the impact of interventions on guinea worm dis

For decades, guinea worm disease, caused by the parasitic worm Dracunculus medinensis, has been a major public health concern, impacting vulnerable populations in Africa and Asia. This review gives an in-depth examination of the various therapeutic approaches used to combat guinea worm disease. This study seeks to provide a current and evidence-based summary of available treatment techniques by conducting an exhaustive examination of peer-reviewed literature, medical databases, and official health organisation publications. The current review intends to contribute to the knowledge base and inf

A comprehensive understanding of the spatial distribution and correlates of infection are key for the planning of disease control programs and assessing the feasibility of elimination and/or eradication. In this work, we used species distribution modeling to predict the environmental suitability of the Guinea worm (Dracunculus medinensis) and identify important climatic and sociodemographic risk factors. Using Guinea worm surveillance data collected by the Chad Guinea Worm Eradication Program (CGWEP) from 2010 to 2022 in combination with remotely sensed climate and sociodemographic correlates

Dracunculiasis, also known as Guinea worm disease, is targeted to become the second human disease and first parasitic infection to be eradicated. The global Guinea Worm Eradication Program (GWEP), through community-based interventions, reduced the burden of disease from an estimated 3.5 million cases per year in 1986 to only 13 human cases in 2022. Despite progress, in 2012 Guinea worm disease was detected in domesticated dogs and later in domesticated cats and baboons. Without previous development of any Guinea worm therapeutics, diagnostic tests to detect pre-patent Guinea worm infection, or

A female patient in her early 50s presented with a complaint of multiple right thigh swellings for eight years which on evaluation were found to be guinea worms. The patient had no risk factors as she was living in a rural area of Maharashtra. We performed radiological investigations which only revealed calcifications in subcutaneous planes. On exploring the excised specimen post-surgery there was a worm-like appearance which on histopathological study confirmed guinea worm disease. We highlight this unusual presentation of guinea worm disease so that surgeons can treat the condition effective

Patrick Manson, a physician-scientist who worked in China between 1866 and 1889, made significant discoveries about the transmission of tropical infectious diseases. He identified that many such diseases require a vector, unique to warmer climates, to facilitate human-to-human transmission. Manson demonstrated that microfilariae have nocturnal periodicity in the blood of patients with elephantiasis. He showed that these microfilariae undergo transformation on ingestion by mosquitoes, which act as vectors to complete their life cycle. By observing operculated eggs in the sputum samples, Manson

Guinea worm is a debilitating waterborne parasitic disease with a long history. This paper examines the ways guinea worm was understood in English-language scientific literature between 1688 and 1931. In the early eighteenth century, guinea worm was principally understood by English-speaking physicians as an exotic wonder of faraway lands. It became viewed as an African disease over the course of the eighteenth century, as transatlantic slavery exposed enslaved Africans to infection with the worm. Worms acquired in West Africa often emerged after arrival to the Caribbean, where the disease bri

Community engagement is a strategy commonly used in health and development programming. Many disease eradication programs engage with communities through different structures and mechanisms to detect, report, contain, and respond to the diseases they target. Qualitative operational research was conducted in a district of Chad co-endemic for both dracunculiasis (i.e., Guinea worm disease) and circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus to reveal factors influencing community engagement behavior in the context of eradication-related programming. Women and men from six communities and stakeholders fro

Little attention has been paid to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in high-income countries and no literature provides an overview of NTDs in Japan. This scoping review aims to synthesize the latest evidence and information to understand epidemiology of and public health response to NTDs in Japan. Using three academic databases, we retrieved articles that mentioned NTDs in Japan, written in English or Japanese, and published between 2010 and 2020. Websites of key public health institutions and medical societies were also explored. From these sources of information, we extracted data that wer
