High-Performance SERS Detection of Monoamine Neurotransmitters Using a Nanogap-Engineered Plasmonic Platform with Application to Human Plasma.

Norepinephrine (NE) and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) are key neurotransmitters that regulate mood, cognition, and neurochemical balance. Abnormal levels of these molecules are linked with several neuropsychiatric disorders, underscoring the need for highly sensitive and selective detection methods. In this study, a hierarchical plasmonic nanocomposite, denoted as zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67)@gold nanoparticles (Au)@polydopamine (PDA)@silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) supported on PDA/polyethyleneimine (PEI)-coated glass (glass@PDA/PEI), is reported, which features a metal-org

RLAgent: retrieval-augmented LLM agents for code-free RNA region-ligand interaction modeling.

Background. Unlike full reading, 'skim-reading' involves the process of looking quickly over information in an attempt to cover more material whilst still being able to retain a superficial view of the underlying content. Within this work, we specifically emulate this natural human activity by providing a dynamic graph-based view of entities automatically extracted from text. For the extraction, we use shallow parsing, co-occurrence analysis and semantic similarity computation techniques. Our main motivation is to assist biomedical researchers and clinicians in coping with increasingly large a

Residential radon in Peru: challenges for health surveillance and lung cancer prevention.

The Journal of Genetics, started by William Bateson in 1910, played a distinguished role in the early years of genetics. However, it stopped publishing in 1978. The Indian Academy of Sciences revived it in 1985, and has published it regularly since then. To commemorate this landmark, I highlight one of the 17 articles published that year. The Potential Mechanism of Cuproptosis in Hemocytes of the Pacific Oyster Crassostrea gigas upon Elesclomol Treatment.

Cuproptosis is a novel cell death dependent on mitochondrial respiration and regulated by copper. While the study of it is mainly focused on tumor therapy, in the present study, two key cuproptosis-related genes, ferredoxin (FDX1) and dihydrolipoamide S-acetyltransferase (DLAT) homologs (designated as CgFDX1 and CgDLAT), were identified from Crassostrea gigas. CgFDX1 has a Fer2 domain with a 2Fe-2S cluster forming a unique ferredoxin. CgDLAT is composed of a biotin_lipoyl domain, an E3-binding domain, and a 2-oxoacid_dh domain. CgFDX1 and CgDLAT mRNA were expressed in all the examined tissues.

Melatonin ameliorates Pb-induced mitochondrial homeostasis and ovarian damage through regulating the p38 signaling pathway.

Lead (Pb), a widespread metallic pollutant in the environment, has been found to have detrimental effects on the female reproduction system. Recently, our group discovered a significant correlation between toxic metals and reproductive endocrine diseases. However, there is limited research on the relationship between blood concentration of Pb and the risk of diminished ovarian reserve function (DOR). Melatonin (MT), as a unique antioxidant, has been shown to reduce Pb toxicity both in vivo and in vitro, but the role of MT on follicle development in Pb-exposed female C57BL6 mice, and the underly

Hepcidin mediates the disorder of iron homeostasis and mitochondrial function in mice under hypobaric hypoxia exposure.

The human body to prolonged high-altitude environments exposure can cause the decreased hepcidin and the disorder of iron homeostasis. Few animal studies have examined the molecular basis of iron metabolism disorder and the impact of hepcidin on the complex phenotype of high-altitude environments. In this study, we display reduced hepcidin level and impaired iron homeostasis upon hypobaric hypoxia, accompanied by mitochondrial dysfunction, abnormal blood cells and metabolic disorder. Importantly, mice overexpressing hepcidin show resistance to hypoxia-induced mitochondrial injury in liver and

Brain iron load and neuroaxonal vulnerability in adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

AIM: Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be associated with an increased risk of dementia in old age. Here, we investigated the liability for neurodegenerative brain disease in adult ADHD, possibly reflected by increased brain iron content and associated neuroaxonal vulnerability. METHODS: Thirty-two adults with ADHD (35 ± 10 years) and 29 age- and sex-matched controls (32 ± 12 years) underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), standardized psychometric testing and assessment of lifestyle factors. Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) was used to assess magnetic abno

Nanomaterials functionalized signal-ON/OFF electrogenerated chemiluminescence biosensor for quantization of trypsin based on target-induced cleavage of peptide.

Trypsin (TPN) is an important proteolytic enzyme in the digestive system and its abnormal levels are indicative of some pancreatic diseases. As an endopeptidase, TPN can cleave substrate peptide mainly by catalyzing the hydrolysis of the carboxyl side peptide bond of lysine (K) or arginine (R) residues. Based on this hydrolysis cleavage effect, two kinds of nanomaterials functionalized electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) biosensors for the determination of TPN were designed as follows: A signal-ON ECL biosensor was fabricated by attaching substrate peptide (HWR*GWVC, "*" representing the

Gold Cluster-Based Profiling of Early Stage Acute Kidney Injury through Second Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging and Mass Spectrometry Imaging.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) poses a major challenge due to the rapid deterioration of renal function, for which the optimal intervention timing has already passed until clinical diagnostics sense abnormalities. Meanwhile, the lack of means to visually understand early-stage AKI at the molecular level hinders the development of interventive strategies. Herein, we developed a high-orthogonal dual-mode imaging strategy integrating second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescence imaging and mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) based on gold clusters for profiling early-stage AKI. Through fabrication and scree

Bipedal DNA walker integrated resonance energy transfer to construct a sensitive electrochemiluminescence biosensor for serotonin detection.

The abnormal level of neurotransmitter serotonin often leads to the blood-brain barrier. Thus, it is urgent to develop a sensitive and efficient method for serotonin detection. Here, we constructed a resonance energy transfer-based electrochemiluminescence (ECL-RET) biosensor sensitized with bipedal DNA walker for the sensitive determination of serotonin. Benefitting from the specific recognition of aptamer to target and enrichment ability of magnetic bead separation, this system achieved the signal transduction of serotonin to nucleic acid and excellent selectivity for serotonin analysis amon

Lab-created conductive filament based on nickel and graphite particles: An attractive material for the additive manufacture of enhanced electrochemical sensors for non-enzymatic and selective glucose sensing.

Developing tailor-made conductive filaments has emerged as a promising niche for producing affordable and high-performance 3D-printed electrochemical sensors. In this context, we propose a novel conductive filament based on graphite, nickel, and polylactic acid (G/Ni/PLA) for the fabrication of non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors aimed at glucose (GLU) determination, a key biomarker in diabetes diagnosis. The materials were thoroughly characterized using morphological, structural, elemental, and electrochemical techniques, which confirmed the effective incorporation of G and Ni into the ther

Zinc nanoparticles mitigate azoxystrobin and its nanoencapsulation-induced hepatic and renal toxicity in rats.

This study sought to ascertain if zinc nanoparticles (ZnNPs) could lessen the toxicity of azoxystrobin (AZ). This naturally occurring methoxyacrylate is one of the most often used fungicides in agriculture in male albino rats. Six sets of 60 mature male albino rats were randomly assigned: control (distilled water), Azoxystrobin formulation (AZOF), Azoxystrobin nano-formula (AZON), ZnNPs, AZOF + ZnNPs, and AZON + ZnNPs. Blood and tissues were obtained for further immunohistochemical, pathological, and biochemical examination. The results showed that exposure to AZOF and AZON significantly incre
