The sera of four patients with chronic hemolytic anemia due to cold agglutinins deposited C' globulins on normal red cells at 37 degrees C. The circulating cells of the patients were heavily coated with C' complex and were relatively resistant to C' hemolysis by cold agglutinin. Such red cells were removed from the patients' circulation at an exponential rate with (51)Cr t((1/2)) that varied from 7 to 19 days. Normal red cells were removed rapidly by hepatic sequestration during the first hours in the patients' circulation. Thereafter, a slower rate of abnormal destruction occurred which was a

Free cholesterol is in rapid equilibrium between serum lipoproteins and red cells. The level of red cell cholesterol is influenced by bile salts, which shift the serum/cell partition of free cholesterol to the cell phase and which inhibit the cholesterol-esterifying mechanism. During incubation in normal serum possessing an active cholesterol-esterifying mechanism, red cells lose cholesterol and surface area and thereby become more spheroidal and less resistant to osmotic lysis. When exposed to serum from patients with obstructive jaundice or to normal serum with added bile salts, red cells ac

In an analysis of blood lead and haemoglobin estimations from 655 lead workers, there was no indication of any change in the haemoglobin until the blood lead exceeded 110 μg./100 ml.; the slight fall at higher levels of blood lead was not significant at the 5% level of confidence. Sixty-seven men who had blood leads greater than 90 μg./100 ml. were examined clinically. One had a low haemoglobin but none had symptoms or signs that were likely to be due to lead absorption. A further 18 men had haemoglobins of 89% (13 g./100 ml.) or less. None was thought to be low due to lead absorption. The abs
