Lead Nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) Toxicity Effects on DNA Structure and Histopathological Damage in Gills of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio).

The toxic impact of environmentally relevant nominal sub-lethal concentration of lead nitrate (23 mg/L) on the gills of Cyprinus carpio after 30 days of exposure was assessed. Structural alterations were analyzed through histopathology, and the DNA damage rate in peripheral erythrocytes was evaluated by alkaline comet assay. A significant deviation in the gill histoarchitecture was observed compared to the control group. Significant changes, including the curling of secondary lamellae, loss of filaments, necrosis, hyperplasia, hypertrophy of cells of primary filament, and vacuolization, were f

Associations between serum indium levels and preserved ratio impaired spirometry among non-smoking industrial workers: A nationwide cross-sectional study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Indium, a rare heavy metal, extensively used in flat panel display manufacturing, poses potential respiratory health risks to workers. Preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm), a term describing nonobstructive lung function abnormalities, is associated with adverse health outcomes. Despite known risks, the relationship between serum indium levels and PRISm remains underexplored. METHODS: A cross-sectional cohort study among non-smoking industry workers potentially exposed to indium in Taiwan was conducted in 2020. Demographic data, and pulmonary function tests were collected co

Lithium Enhances Ferroptosis sensitivity in melanoma cells and promotes CD8+ T Cell infiltration and differentiation.

Lithium exposure reduces melanoma incidence and mortality, yet its therapeutic mechanisms are unclear. This study explores the effects of lithium on ferroptosis sensitivity and anti-tumor T cell response in melanoma. We found that lithium significantly enhanced RSL3-induced ferroptosis in vitro, evidenced by increased mitochondrial peroxide, lipid peroxidation, and mitochondrial abnormalities. Lithium also inhibited B16-F10 melanoma cell proliferation and migration in a dose-dependent manner. Cell cycle analysis showed lithium and RSL3 induced distinct perturbations, including G2/M and G0/G1 p

Assessing Chronic Heavy Metal Exposure by Analysis of Human Cataract Specimens and the Relationship to Metabolic Profiles.

PURPOSE: With age, the mammalian lens forms successive layers of crystallin protein fibers which infoliate with lens growth and development. As heavy metals generally bind to tissue protein, heavy metals are posited to sequester within the lens with age. Therefore, this study aims to compare heavy metals in human crystalline lens of older adults to known physiologic blood and urine levels and assess the association between concentrations in the lens and metabolic biomarkers. METHODS: Consecutive lens specimens obtained during cataract surgery by phacoemulsification were subjected to atomic sp

Deciphering the impact of heavy metal mixed exposure on lipid metabolism using three statistical models.

Lipid metabolism disorders pose a significant threat to human health. However, the relationship between heavy metal mixed exposure and lipid metabolism remains poorly understood. This study recruited 1717 residents living near a chromium factory in northeast China. The concentrations of blood Cr, Mn, Cd, Pb, V, and serum CHOL, TG, LDL and HDL levels were measured. Generalized linear model (GLM), quantile g-computation (Qg-comp), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were simultaneously employed to investigate the associations between heavy metal mixed exposure and lipid markers levels.

Neurovascular unit impairment in iron deficiency anemia.

Iron is one of the crucial elements for CNS development and function and its deficiency (ID) is the most common worldwide nutrient deficit in the world. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in pregnant women and infants is a worldwide health problem due to its high prevalence and its irreversible long-lasting effects on brain development. Even with iron supplementation, IDA during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding can result in irreversible cognitive, motor, and behavioral impairments. The neurovascular unit (NVU) plays an important role in iron transport within the CNS as well as in the blood brain-barr

Association between the MTHFR (rs1801133) gene variation and serum trace elements levels (Copper and Zinc) in individuals diagnosed with neural tube defects.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Neural tube defects (NTDs) occur when the neural tube fails to close within 28 days of human embryonic development. This results in central nervous system disorders like anencephaly, spina bifida, and encephalocele. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to minimize their impact on an individual's health and well-being. The present study aims to define the association between prenatal exposure to trace elements (Cu and Zn) and the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the MTHFR gene involved in folate metabolism pathways in neural tube defects in children and their mo

Laser-printed paper ELISA and hydroxyapatite immobilization for colorimetric congenital anomalies screening in saliva.

BACKGROUND: Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a fetal protein that can indicate congenital anomalies such as Down syndrome and spinal canal blockage when detected at abnormal levels in pregnant women. Current AFP detection methods rely on invasive blood or serum samples, which require sophisticated equipment. From the many solutions proposed, colorimetric paper-based assays excel in point-of-care settings. The concept of paper-based ELISA (p-ELISA) enhances traditional methods, aligning with the ASSURED criteria for diagnostics in resource-limited regions. Despite success in microfluidic paper-based

Analysis of similarities and differences between transient symptomatic zinc deficiency and acrodermatitis enteropathica in children: a case report of a Chinese Yi-ethnic infant.

BACKGROUND: Transient symptomatic zinc deficiency (TSZD), an acquired type of zinc deficiency, is a rare, but probably underrecognized disease, extremely in breastfed premature with low birthweight infants. Its clinical manefestations are similar to Acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE), which is a genetic zinc absorption disorder caused by SLC39A4 gene mutations. This gene encodes a member of the zinc/iron-regulated transporter-like protein (ZIP) family. The encoded protein localizes to cell membranes and is required for zinc uptake in the intestine. TSZD is often misdiagnosed as AE because of th

BACH1 regulates erythrophagocytosis and iron-recycling in β-thalassemia.

Macrophages play essential roles in erythrophagocytosis and iron recycling. β-thalassemia is characterized by a genetic defect in hemoglobin synthesis, which increases the rate of iron recycling. We previously showed that reduced expression of the BTB and CNC homolog 1 (BACH1) gene leads to increased phagocytosis of abnormal RBCs by activated monocytes. However, the mechanisms underlying this abnormal RBC clearance remained unclear. Herein, the spleen and bone marrow cells of β-thalassemic mice were examined for erythrophagocytosis CD markers and iron-recycling genes. Higher expression levels

Effects of Environmental Cadmium Exposure on the Liver in Korean Adults: Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Studies.

Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant with an exceptionally long biological half-life. The liver is a major organ for Cd metabolism, but the toxicity of Cd is unclear. This study sought to determine whether blood Cd (BCd) level (representing recent exposure [months] to Cd) was associated with liver function in Korean adults, both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. The baseline cross-sectional study involved 2,086 adults (male: 908, female: 1,178) in 2010 - 2011, and 503 of them (male: 207, female: 296) were followed up in 2014 - 2015. BCd was measured by graphite-furnace atom

The association between plasma zinc concentrations and markers of glucose metabolism in adults in Cameroon.

An abnormal Zn status has been suggested to play a role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. However, epidemiological studies of the relationship between plasma Zn concentrations and diabetes are sparse and inconclusive. We aimed to investigate the association between plasma Zn concentrations and glycaemic markers (fasting glucose, 2-h glucose and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance) in rural and urban Cameroon. We studied 596 healthy adults (63·3 % women) aged 25-55 years in a population-based cross-sectional study. The mean plasma Zn concentration was 13·7 ± 2·7 µmol/L over
