Synthetic Cathinones: Epidemiology, Toxicity, Potential for Abuse, and Current Public Health Perspective.

Synthetic cathinones, derived from cathinone found in the plant Catha edulis, represent the second largest and most frequently seized group of new psychoactive substances. They are considered as β-keto analogs of amphetamine, sharing pharmacological effects with amphetamine and cocaine. This review describes the neurotoxic properties of synthetic cathinones, encompassing their capacity to induce neuroinflammation, dysregulate neurotransmitter systems, and alter monoamine transporters and receptors. Additionally, it discusses the rewarding and abuse potential of synthetic cathinones drawing fro

Spectrum of Kidney Biopsy Findings Associated With Methamphetamine Use.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine (METH) is one of the most used drugs of abuse worldwide. However, there are few reports and series examining the toxic kidney effects of METH, and associated histopathological changes are not well-described. METHODS: We retrospectively identified 112 patients with a history significant for METH abuse, of whom 62 were using METH-only and 60 were using METH plus other drugs of abuse. RESULTS: In the METH-only cohort, the mean age was 41 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 33-49) and most (76%) were male. Almost all cases (97%) showed evidence of kidney dysfunction a

Dissociative Trance Led to a Catastrophe: A Case Report.

Dissociation is a cognitive process that disrupts consciousness, identity, or memory. It is frequently used as a form of defense in response to significant stress or trauma. In serious situations, it might show as a dissociative disorder, which extremely impairs psychological functioning. Dissociative trance, a type of other specified dissociative disorder (OSDD), is characterized by an abrupt loss of awareness, leading to unresponsiveness and involuntary actions. Despite being conscious, the individual may feel separated from their body, as if it were under the control of an external force. T

Making sense of drug use and dependence-A scoping review of mass media interventions intended to reduce stigma towards people who use drugs.

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs face entrenched stigma, which fosters shame, restricts service access, and exacerbates inequalities. The use of mass media in anti-stigma interventions offers an opportunity to challenge stigmatising attitudes at scale. There are, however, inconsistencies in messaging approaches used in mass media anti-stigma interventions, and how authors conceptualise and measure 'stigma'. METHODS: This scoping review maps literature on the development and/or evaluation of mass media interventions intended to reduce stigma towards people who use drugs. We systematically sear

Symptom Shifting From Nonsuicidal Self-Injury to Substance Use and Borderline Personality Pathology.

IMPORTANCE: A decline in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior is often viewed as an indication of mental health improvement when treating adolescents and young adults with borderline personality pathology. However, evidence shows that an initial decrease in NSSI behavior does not always signal recovery, and potential symptom shifting needs to be considered. OBJECTIVE: To examine the codevelopment of NSSI and substance use in adolescents and young adults receiving treatment for NSSI behavior and to explore whether shifting from NSSI behavior to substance use is associated with emerging or p

Mobile phone ownership, social media use, and substance use at ages 11-13 in the ABCD study.

INTRODUCTION: There is ongoing concern about the impact of increasing use of social media and digital devices on unhealthy behaviors such as substance use in youth. Mobile phone and social media use have been associated with substance use in adolescent and young adult samples, but few studies have evaluated these relationships in younger samples. METHODS: This secondary analysis of data drawn from the ABCD Study examined associations between youth-reported mobile phone ownership and social media use at age 11-12 and use of alcohol, nicotine/tobacco, and cannabis over the next 18 months. Examining the associations between laxative use, substance use, depressive symptoms, and obsessions and compulsions in adults with an eating disorder.

This study examined laxative and substance use in adults with an eating disorder, and the association with depression, compulsions, and obsessions. A retrospective chart review of 182 women who had a formal diagnosis of an eating disorder and were receiving specialized outpatient treatment was conducted. The chart review included questionnaires completed at intake assessment, including a demographic survey with questions asking about laxative use, substance use, and the types of substances used. Adults also reported their levels of depression, obsessions and compulsions on psychometric questio

Impact of intraoperative cortical indocyanine green extravasation on local vasogenic edema immediately after direct revascularization in an adult with moyamoya disease: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Local vasogenic edema induced after direct revascularization in moyamoya disease (MMD) is associated with blood-brain barrier dysfunction, potentially leading to postoperative cerebral hyperperfusion (CHP) or delayed intracerebral hemorrhage. This phenomenon allows the leakage of fluids, proteins, and other substances from the blood vessels into the extracellular compartment. Typically, such edema is observed postoperatively rather than intraoperatively. OBSERVATIONS: A 48-year-old female with ischemic-onset MMD underwent revascularization on her left hemisphere with Suzuki's angi

Liver transplantation for critically ill patients with acute on chronic liver failure: a prospective national programme of waitlist prioritisation.

BACKGROUND: Acute on Chronic Liver Failure (ACLF) complicates chronic liver disease (CLD) combining rapidly progressive hepatic with extra-hepatic multiple organ failure and high short-term mortality. Effective therapeutic options are very limited, and liver transplantation (LT) seldom utilised through concerns of high recipient mortality and resource use. Retrospective reports suggest recent outcomes may have improved, but use of LT for ACLF has not been prospectively assessed. METHODS: A prospective programme of prioritised liver graft allocation for selected recipients with ACLF through re

Pulsed electric field at resonance frequency combat Klebsiella pneumonia biofilms.

Healtcare-associated infections have increased due to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of Gram-negative pathogens (GNPs) and the development of outbreacks over the past two decades. In this work, we investigated how exposure to positive electric pulses affects the growth characteristics of Klebsiella pneumonia (K. pneumonia), a common cause of pneumonia. We explored the impact of varying exposure frequencies (0.2-2 Hz) and time (15-90 min, at resonance frequency) on bioelectric signals produced during cell division, biofilm formation, and bacterial antibiotic susceptibility. Long-term Outcomes of People With DSM Psychotic Disorder NOS.

INTRODUCTION: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-IV diagnostic category "Psychotic disorder not otherwise specified" (PNOS) is seldom investigated, and we lack knowledge about long-term outcomes. We examined long-term symptom severity, global functioning, remission/recovery rates, and diagnostic stability after the first treatment for PNOS. METHODS: Participants with first-treatment PNOS (n = 32) were reassessed with structured interviews after 7 to 10 years. The sample also included narrow schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD, n = 94) and psychotic bipolar disor

Use of Both Alcohol and Cannabis Protective Behavioral Strategies is Associated with Fewer Negative Consequences: A Moderation Analysis.

Background: Concurrent alcohol and cannabis (i.e. marijuana) use (CAM; use of both substances within the same specified time frame) is prevalent among college students and associated with increased risk of negative substance-related consequences. Extant research supports the use of protective behavioral strategies (PBS) for reducing negative consequences associated with both alcohol and cannabis use. However, limited research exists regarding the efficacy of PBS among CAM users, and it is unknown whether using PBS for both alcohol and cannabis augments protective effects. The present study tes

Design, Synthesis and Evaluation of a Series of Zinc(II) Complexes of Anthracene-Affixed Multifunctional Organic Assembly as Potential Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Agents against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

A novel class of zinc(II)-based metal complexes, i.e., [Zn2(acdp)(μ-Cl)]·2H2O (1), [Zn2(acdp)(μ-NO3)]·2H2O (2), and [Zn2(acdp)(μ-O2CCF3)]·2H2O (3) (Cl- = chloride; NO3- = nitrate; CF3CO2- = trifluoroacetate) of anthracene-affixed multifunctional organic assembly, H3acdp (H3acdp = N,N'-bis[anthracene-2-ylmethyl]-N,N'-bis[carboxymethyl]-1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol), have emerged as promising antibacterial and antibiofilm agents in the domain of medicinal chemistry. Accordingly, complexes 1-3 were synthesized by utilizing H3acdp in combination with ZnCl2, Zn(NO3)2·6H2O, and Zn(CF3CO2)2·H2O respectivel

Bioelectricity Production from Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) Using Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus Strain nbpp1 as a Biocatalyst.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) function by using microorganisms to decompose the substrate at the anode, producing electrons and protons. These charges are then transported to the cathode, where electricity is generated. Previous studies have shown their promising probabilities for practical applications. MFCs are praised for their ability to address energy shortages and environmental pollution simultaneously. They have the potential to generate electricity directly from organic substances, reducing energy losses that occur during intermediate conversion steps. The main challenge lies in transiti

Toxidrome of an Easily Obtainable Nootropic: A Case Report of Phenibut Intoxication and Withdrawal Delirium.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Phenibut (4-amino-3-phenyl-butyric acid) is a structural analog of GABA with central nervous system depressant and anxiolytic properties, developed in the former Soviet Union for anxiety, insomnia, and alcohol withdrawal. Its primary mechanism of action is believed to be a GABA-B receptor agonist-with high affinity at the α 2 δ subunit-containing voltage-dependent calcium channels and therefore gabapentinoid activity-as well as, to a lesser extent, GABA-A agonist activity. While not approved or regulated by the FDA, phenibut is easily obtainable online, where it is marketed

Testing Three New Scoring Methods to Identify Detained Adolescent Girls with Elevated Levels of Callous-Unemotional Traits.

Different scoring methods have been proposed to identify adolescents with high levels of callous-unemotional (CU) traits as measured by the Inventory of Callous-Unemotional traits (ICU). This is the first study to scrutinize the usefulness of the normative, empirical, and DSM-5 with Limited Prosocial Emotions (LPE) scoring methods in criminal justice-involved girls (N = 192). Girls (Mage = 15.74) completed the ICU and other self-report questionnaires. A diagnostic interview was used to determine the presence of conduct disorder (CD) and other psychiatric disorders.
