Alcohol mixed with energy drinks among university students in Poland: prevalence, determinants, and health implications.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol mixed with energy drinks (AmED) has emerged as a public health concern, particularly among young adults. Evidence shows that combining energy drinks (EDs) with alcohol can mask ethanol's sedative effects, promoting higher intake and risky behaviors. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among university students in the Mazovia region of Poland (July 2025). An anonymous questionnaire assessed sociodemographic characteristics, EDs consumption, AmED use, co-use of psychoactive substances, consumption contexts, and adverse effects. Associations were analyzed u

An Assessment of the Provision of Vaping Products by UK Stop Smoking Services Using Data From Freedom of Information Requests.

Introduction Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and disease and arises due to prolonged and repeated inhalational exposure to chemical toxicants found in cigarette smoke. Within this context, vaping products, also termed e‑cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems, have been positioned by public health bodies as being substantially less harmful than combustible cigarettes. Furthermore, evidence also suggests that vaping products may be more effective in supporting smoking cessation than traditional support such as nicotine replacement therapy. The UK National

A History of Psychiatric Hospitalization and Surgically Managed Facial Abscess: An Observed-to-Expected Association Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Severe mental illness is associated with poor oral health, and patients with psychiatric conditions are hospitalized for dental disease more often than the general population. Whether this extends to facial abscesses severe enough to require surgical drainage has not been examined, particularly in United States safety-net populations. We sought to determine whether patients with a history of psychiatric hospitalization are overrepresented among surgically managed facial abscess cases relative to what published general-population rates would predict. Methods: Patients wer

Psychosis and Incidental Latent Toxoplasmosis: A Case Report and Key Learning Points.

Psychotic disorders are characterized by hallucinations, delusions, and impairments in reality testing, with relapses often associated with medication non-compliance, psychiatric stressors, and substance use. Toxoplasma gondii is a neurotropic intracellular parasite with a high global seroprevalence, and latent infection has been documented in association with psychotic syndromes, although the nature of this relationship remains uncertain. The aim of this case report is to describe a patient presenting with a psychotic relapse in whom latent Toxoplasma gondii infection was identified during in

Prevalence of schizophrenia spectrum and bipolar disorder among patients with cannabis induced psychosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing cannabis-induced psychosis from primary psychiatric disorders is difficult and has significant clinical and prognostic implications. Current treatment approaches lack standardized guidelines, potentially leading to the development of schizophrenia spectrum and bipolar disorder. This study systematically reviews the literature and provides a pooled prevalence of later developing these disorders following a cannabis-induced psychosis diagnosis. METHODS: We systematically reviewed Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PsychInfo for studies reporting on a

Complications of opioid use disorder in hospitalized patients with serious infections: A retrospective analysis of clinical course and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) poses significant public health threats at epidemic levels in the United States. Injection drug use (IDU) is particularly associated with serious infections, leading to increased risk for complications and poor outcomes. This study aims to characterize the complications and outcomes among patients with OUD who are hospitalized for the management of various infections. Additionally, a comparison of outcomes was performed between the group of patients with OUD who do not inject drugs (non-PWID) and the group of persons who inject drugs (PWID). METHODS: We p

"PrEP is always on the table": mixed methods study of provider willingness to refer/link clients to PrEP in community sexual health and drug use-related programs.

Southern U.S. communities experience high HIV incidence and substance use prevalence, yet low PrEP uptake. Providers (N = 191) completed a survey about willingness to refer/link clients with HIV risk to PrEP. Through in-depth interviews, 12 directors (5 sexually transmitted infection [STI] clinics; 5 syringe services programs [SSPs]; 2 substance use treatment programs [SUTPs]) described multi-level factors that contextualized provider willingness. Providers were more willing to refer/link clients with unspecified HIV risk and men who have sex with men to PrEP vs. other populations. SUTP (vs. S

Assessing the importance of post-mortem interval and other variables on the analysis of ethanol in the vitreous humour with a focus on ethyl glucuronide and ethyl sulfate: A critical review.

Vitreous humour is used to assess intoxication at the time of death due to its anatomical isolation, which reduces contamination risk. Toxicological analysis typically includes drugs and alcohol. For interpreting post-mortem ethanol concentrations, distinguishing between ante-mortem ingestion and post-mortem production from putrefaction is essential. For this purpose, biomarkers like ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and ethyl sulfate (EtS) are crucial for confirming alcohol consumption. Factors such as post-mortem interval (PMI), the cause of death, individual characteristics like sex, age, body mass i

What Can Adults With ADHD Tell Us About Their Experiences? A Review of Qualitative Methods to Map a New Research Agenda.

OBJECTIVES: Although ADHD has its roots in childhood, significant symptoms persist into adulthood for more than half of individuals. Adults with ADHD are heterogeneous in terms of symptom presentations, impairment domains, and relative strengths. Consequently, it is essential to better understand the diverse self-perceptions and experiences of adults with ADHD; qualitative methods are a valuable complement to quantitative work in this area. Our aim is to provide a scoping review of qualitative studies on adults with ADHD to articulate the current status of the field and establish future resear

Pharmacotherapy of Psychotic Disorders in Türkiye: Insights From a National Prescription Database.

OBJECTIVE: Psychotic disorders, affecting 3-7 per 1000 individuals, significantly impair mental functioning. Although antipsychotic medications represent the mainstay of treatment, prescribing practices can vary based on patient characteristics and across different countries. Currently, national epidemiological data on psychotropic prescribing patterns in Türkiye are lacking, and understanding these variations is crucial for informing treatment guidelines and optimizing patient care. METHODS: Data from the Turkish Prescription Information System (PIS) for the year 2019 were analyzed to evalua
