Sociodemographic and obstetric determinants of HIV infection among pregnant women in Cameroon: a contribution toward the elimination of vertical transmission in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: The risk of HIV transmission during pregnancy remains a concern in Cameroon. Recent estimates suggest a national HIV prevalence of approximately 4.5%, increasing the likelihood of vertical transmission. OBJECTIVE: To estimate HIV seroprevalence and identify sociodemographic and obstetric determinants of HIV infection among pregnant women attending antenatal care in Cameroon. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2022 to June 2023 among pregnant women aged 15 years and above in 324 health facilities across eight regions. Consecutive voluntary sampling was use

Integrated serosurveillance to assess disease elimination in coastal Ecuador: onchocerciasis, yaws, and trachoma.

BACKGROUND: Testing blood samples with multiplex bead assays can assess elimination and identify residual foci of transmission for multiple pathogens simultaneously. In Ecuador, onchocerciasis and yaws are presumed eliminated, and the status of trachoma is unknown. We assessed their elimination status by measuring IgG antibodies in children 6-24 months. METHODS: In a birth cohort of 404 children measured between 2021-2024 in Esmeraldas province, Ecuador, we tested dried blood spots at ages 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months using a multiplex IgG assay that included antigens to Onchocerca volvulus (O

Strengthening frontline capacity for skin neglected tropical diseases: Findings from a global survey.

BACKGROUND: Skin-related neglected tropical diseases (skin NTDs) remain a major source of morbidity in resource-limited settings. These conditions include Buruli ulcer, chromoblastomycosis and other deep mycoses, cutaneous leishmaniasis, post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, mycetoma, noma, onchocerciasis, scabies, tungiasis, and yaws. Recent efforts have focused on developing training materials to help frontline health workers diagnose and treat skin NTDs. However, little is known about how these materials are perceived and utilized in endemic regions. We perform

Mental health in skin neglected tropical diseases.

Neglected tropical skin diseases (SNTDs) include at least nine conditions affecting more than one billion people worldwide. While their physical manifestations have been studied in detail, the mental health consequences are highly under-researched and underreported, often limited to specific conditions. This article summarizes existing literature on mental health aspects of individual SNTDs ranging from depression, anxiety, stigma, social isolation, post-traumatic stress disorder, epilepsy, and developmental impacts on growing children. While evidence is more for leprosy, lymphatic filariasis,

Elucidating the multitarget neuroprotective mechanisms of protocatechuic acid in neurological disorders (Review).

BACKGROUND: Mosaicism for chromosomal structural rearrangements (Rea) is rare and the timing and mechanisms of mosaic Rea formation, maintenance, and clinical manifestation are poorly understood. To date, there are no published data on the cytogenetic profile of mosaic Reas. The question as to whether the proportion of abnormal cells in the carrier's cultured blood is clinically significant remains unanswered. A previous study showed a strong female preponderance among carriers of mosaicism for Rea with pericentromeric breaks, indicating female-specific instability in early embryos. However, t

Research progress of SPP1 in cancer regulation: Tumorigenesis, metastasis, tumor microenvironment, immunity and therapeutic targets (Review).

OBJECTIVES: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) has been defined as a systemic, chronic, inflammatory arthritis, usually seronegative for rheumatoid factor (RF), associated with cutaneous psoriasis. The exact prevalence of PsA is unknown and its estimation has been difficult, partly due to the lack of a widely accepted classification criteria. Agreed and validated criteria will facilitate comparison between centres and different countries in the areas of epidemiology, outcome studies and therapeutic trials. A number of classification criteria have been published by Moll & Wright (M & W), Bennett's, Vase

Accelerating onchocerciasis elimination in humanitarian settings: lessons from South Sudan.

There is persistent meso- and hyperendemicity of onchocerciasis (river blindness) in South Sudan, a country that has endured armed conflict for many years. In 2018, Amref Health Africa, in collaboration with local communities, the South Sudan Ministry of Health and other stakeholders, initiated some interventions, among which was Innovative Approaches to Reduce the Burden of Disease Caused by Onchocerciasis (IARDO) project. This project implemented several strategies, including identifying areas where onchocerciasis elimination programs need strengthening, switching from annual to biannual com

Sexual Mosaicism and Teratogenesis in Simulium guianense s.l. and S. incrustatum s.l. (Diptera: Simuliidae), Onchocerciasis vectors, from Environmentally Impacted Areas in the Yanomami Indigenous Land, Brazil.

Sexual mosaics in Simuliidae members have been detected at low frequencies in various locations worldwide. These phenotypic expressions are expected in very small amounts in any natural insect population and may result from inherent individual formation factors, such as hormonal or external elements, i.e., environmental pollution and parasitism, both of which can disrupt sexual differentiation development processes. This study assessed a Simuliidae collection sampled as a result of the Brazilian focus on endemic onchocerciasis in the Yanomami Indigenous Land in 2013, 2014, 2017, and 2021. Some

Alternative approaches for monitoring and evaluation of lymphatic filariasis following mass drug treatment with ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine and albendazole in East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea.

BACKGROUND: WHO recommends two annual rounds of mass drug administration (MDA) with ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine, and albendazole (IDA) for lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination in treatment naïve areas that are not co-endemic for onchocerciasis such as Papua New Guinea (PNG). Whether two rounds of MDA are necessary or sufficient and the optimal sampling strategies and endpoints for stopping MDA remain undefined. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Two cross-sectional studies were conducted at baseline (N = 49 clusters or villages) and 12 months after mass drug administration (MDA) with IDA (N = 47 villa

Evaluating stakeholder coordination and partnerships for NTD elimination in Taraba state, Nigeria: a multi-level analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Nigeria has a significant burden of NTDs with more than 120 million people at risk of the dominant NTDs namely Lymphatic Filariasis, Onchocerciasis, and Schistosomiasis. Control efforts have involved the four levels of governance with programs focused on vector control, preventive chemotherapy, water, sanitation and health education. However, the coordination across these levels and with multiple stakeholders remains unclear especially in states like Taraba that have received significant funding from local non-governmental organisations. METHODS: This study evaluated NTD control

Pregnant Women, a Potential Reservoir for Onchocerca volvulus? A Cross Sectional Study in Maridi County, South Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by Onchocerca volvulus, is hyperendemic in many parts of Africa, including South Sudan. Pregnant women may be a parasite reservoir as they are not included in routine ivermectin (IVM) treatments due to unassessed drug safety. In our study we determined the proportion of pregnant women infected with Onchocerca volvulus and assessed the knowledge and practices on IVM use during pregnancy. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 2023 at Maridi hospital in Maridi County, an onchoc

Metabolomic analysis of larval stages of Onchocerca japonica (Spirurida: Onchocercidae), raised in black fly (Diptera: Simuliidae) vectors, by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

To monitor and prevent the spread of zoonotic onchocerciasis, identification of the natural vectors (blood-sucking insects) of its causative agents, Onchocerca species, is crucial. To date, vector identification depends on the detection of infective third-stage larvae in insects by traditional dissection. We aimed to develop a novel, more efficient method for the discrimination of the four larval stages, i.e. microfilariae (Mf), first-stage larvae (L1), second-stage larvae (L2), and third-stage larvae (L3), of O. japonica by metabolomic analysis. Microfilariae of O. japonica, the causative age

A Novel Biplex Onchocerca volvulus Rapid Diagnostic Test Evaluated Among 3- to 9-Year-Old Children in Maridi, South Sudan.

Background: Point-of-care diagnostic tests are essential for confirming Onchocerca volvulus transmission in remote, resource-limited, onchocerciasis-endemic communities. In Maridi, South Sudan, we field-tested a novel "biplex A" rapid diagnostic test (RDT) developed by Drugs & Diagnostics for Tropical Diseases (DDTD), San Diego, California. Methods: In February 2023, children aged 3-9 years were recruited from study sites at different distances from the Maridi Dam, a known blackfly breeding site. O. volvulus antibodies were detected using the DDTD biplex A RDT, which detects antibodies to Ov16

Molecular Identification of Onchocerciasis Vectors (Diptera: Simuliidae) from the Central Himalayan Landscape of India: A DNA Barcode Approach.

Background: Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are a notorious group of blood-sucking insects acting as vectors of various diseases in humans and other animals, most notable being Onchocerciasis. Due to its medical and veterinary significance, accurate and quick species identification is of utmost importance in the field of black fly research. DNA barcoding is one such taxonomic tool, aiding in quick and efficient species identification using molecular methods. Despite sporadic reports of ocular and cutaneous Onchocerciasis, especially from North-East India, Indian Simuliidae has been understud
