In 376 children, between 6 months and 5 years of age, with suspected urinary tract infection, 4 parameters of a routine urine examination were correlated with culture reports. In diagnosing urinary infection, the sensitivity and specificity of proteinuria was 79 and 80% respectively, that of bacteriuria 78 and 96% and that of pyuria > 10 wbc/hpf 80 and 82% respectively. 61% among the culture positive groups had all these three parameter present, as against only 0.5% in the culture negative group (P < 0.001). Isolated mesangial C3 proliferative glomerulonephritis is a nephropathy poorly defined among glomerular diseases. Clinical picture is characterized by episodes of gross hematuria and/or persistent or recurrent microhematuria and/or proteinuria. Short-term prognosis (less than 3 years) is considered to be benign, although not much information is available in reference to long-term follow-up. The significance of isolated proteinuria in pediatric patients is uncertain. Therefore, we retrospectively studied all children evaluated for this urinary abnormality during the 6-year period from 1986 to 1992. We present here the first described case of Nail-patella syndrome (NPS) and pregnancy. Complications occurred during the pregnancy with the onset of preeclampsia at 22 weeks, leading to intrauterine fetal death at 24 weeks. The nephropathy of the NPS began clinically during the course of gestation. Postpartum, it persisted as isolated proteinuria, which became a nephrotic syndrome 18 months later.

23 patients (16 women, 7 men) with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and renal biopsy-proven mesangial glomerulopathy (MGP) were followed for 4-117 months (median 42) in order to evaluate the clinical course of their renal disease. Urinalysis was made, and 24-hour urine protein excretion and serum creatinine were determined. At the time of renal biopsy, the clinical renal findings of the patients were isolated hematuria (n = 10), isolated proteinuria (n = 6) and hematuria combined with proteinuria (n = 7). Hematuria persisted and renal function remained normal in all patients with isolated hematuria.

We reviewed the clinical features in 7 boys with asymptomatic low molecular weight proteinuria. The disease had first been reported by us in 1980. The distinctive features common to all patients were male dominance, asymptomatic proteinuria with a large amount of low molecular weight proteins, normal development and growth, normal renal function tests in childhood, and minimal histological changes in renal biopsy specimens. To elucidate the morphological basis of glomerular haematuria, morphometric analysis of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) and lamina densa (LD) was performed on silver impregnated samples for electron microscopy.
