Diagnostic odyssey of a German shepherd dog with disseminated Penicillium labradoris infection: a case report.

Below, the first confirmed canine infection caused by Penicillium labradorum (syn. P. labradoris) in Italy is reported, diagnosed using a multidisciplinary approach. In November 2021, a 10-year-old spayed female German Shepherd dog with urinary incontinence was presented. Physical examination of the right forelimb revealed a non-painful soft tissue enlargement with firm consistency, while peripheral lymph nodes were unremarkable. Hematological, serum biochemical, and urinalysis tests showed no significant abnormalities. Radiographic examination revealed a proliferative lesion of the right radi

Gastric-type adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix presenting in urine cytology specimens: A case report and literature review.

Gastric-type endocervical adenocarcinoma (GEA) is a rare type adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix that is unrelated to human papillomavirus (HPV). GEA is difficult to diagnose due to its bland-looking morphological characteristics and is therefore often underdiagnosed. Although abnormal cells may be seen on cervical cytology specimens, they are rarely diagnosed as malignant and are often classified as atypical glandular cells. As a result, GEA may be diagnosed at advanced stages, with cytology samples from other organs after it has already invaded adjacent organs. Here, we report a case of GE

Transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder in children and adolescents: six-case series and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Lower urinary tract tumours are uncommon in paediatrics. Transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder (TCCB) is rarely found in the first two decades of life and is exceptional under 10 years of age. The present series aimed to expand the number of reported cases in the literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 1984-2007, six patients (four male, two female), aged 6, 9, 12, 13, 14 and 17 years, were treated at our centre. Clinical presentation was macroscopic haematuria in five and pyelonephritis in one. Physical examination, laboratory analysis, ultrasound and cystoscopy were performed b

Treatment of thoracolumbar spinal cord compression associated with Histoplasma capsulatum infection in a cat.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 7-year-old domestic shorthair cat with a 2-month history of decreased appetite and weight loss was examined because of paraparesis of 1 week's duration that had progressed to paraplegia 3 days earlier. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Neurologic examination revealed normo- to hyperreflexia and absence of deep pain sensation in the hind limbs and thoracolumbar spinal hyperesthesia. Neuro-anatomically, the lesion was located within the T3 through L3 spinal cord segments. Biochemical analysis and cytologic examination of CSF revealed no abnormalities. Radiography revealed narrowing of the

[Giant seminoma in abdominal retention of the testis manifested with unilateral leg pain: a case report].

A 26-year-old man was admitted to the department of surgery of our hospital with a complaint of intermittent left leg pain for the past two weeks. Ultrasonography revealed reduced blood flow to the tibial artery, which suggested a vascular disease like arteriosclerosis obliterans. Enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a huge abdominal tumor and a 3-dimensional CT scan showed a feeding artery from the left renal artery to the huge tumor. Findings of routine blood and urine examinations were elevated levels of lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, and C-reactive protein. Surgical exp

Diagnosis of systemic cryptococcosis by fecal cytology in a dog.

A 3-year-old Boxer was presented with progressive diarrhea, vomiting, and lethargy of 5-months duration. The dog had watery black feces, a mature neutrophilia, and microcytic anemia. Cytologic evaluation of a direct fecal smear stained with Wright's-Giemsa revealed numerous encapsulated, narrow-based, budding organisms consistent with Cryptococcus sp. Pyogranulomatous inflammation and Cryptococcus organisms also were observed in ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspirates of the small intestine and mesenteric lymph nodes, and in histologic sections of colonic biopsies obtained by endoscopy. Prospective evaluation of genetic abnormalities and telomerase expression in exfoliated urinary cells for bladder cancer detection.

PURPOSE: To evaluate alternative procedures to cytoscopic examination we prospectively compared noninvasive procedures for detecting bladder cancer namely cytology, loss of heterozygosity (LOH), microsatellite instability and human telomerase catalytic subunit reverse transcriptase (hTERT) messenger (m) RNA detection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specificity and cutoff values were established in the blood and urine sediment of 50 controls. Sensitivity was analyzed in the urine and tissue samples of 50 patients with bladder cancer. The diagnosis was established by cystoscopic and histological examin

[Primary carcinoma in situ of the ureter: a case report].

A 55-year-old male visited our hospital with a complaint of gross hematuria and right lower abdominal pain. Cytological findings of voided urine suggested the presence of malignant cells. Cystoscopic examination revealed bloody urine discharge from the right ureteral orifice and no abnormality in the bladder wall. The retrograde pyelogram showed no tumor masses. However, malignant cells were detected cytologically in the right ureteral catheteral urine twice. Under the preoperative diagnosis of primary urothelial tumor of the right upper urinary tract, right total nephroureterectomy was perfor

Conventional bladder wash cytology performed by four experts versus quantitative image analysis.

Bladder wash cytology provides superior results for the detection of bladder malignancies than does voided urine analysis. Image analysis systems have been developed for quantification of cytologic features. In this study, routine bladder wash cytology is compared with an automated image analysis system (QUANTICYT). We studied a random set of 100 bladder wash samples from a population of 1614 patients in follow-up after bladder cancer. Four experienced pathologists interpreted the same 100 Papanicolaou-stained slides. Cytologic and image analysis results were compared for prediction of a cysto

Urine cytology in patients with calculi.

The cytological changes in voided urines were analysed in 154 patients with calculi. No abnormality was seen in 52.6%; 40.9% contained smooth-bordered clusters of transitional cells with essentially normal, centrally placed nuclei. These, when found in routine urines, were reliable in predicting calculi in 62.5% of cases. Of the calculus urines, 6.5% showed features suspicious of differentiated transitional carcinoma. Although their morphological features overlapped with those observed in urines from 40 cases of proved differentiated transitional carcinoma, they contained significantly fewer s

Pre-clinical cytological diagnosis of bladder cancer.

The records of 100 recent urology service patients with bladder neoplasms were evaluated for correlation of cytological findings with clinical and histological diagnoses. At the time of diagnosis 83 patients had synchronous positive biopsies and cytologies, 3 had negative cytologies (even though urothelial cancer was present) and the remaining 14 had abnormal cytologies but clinical examination was negative. Of these 14 patients invasive cancer has been identified subsequently in 11, while 3 have not yet returned for clinical followup. Analysis of the 11 patients in whom cancer was proved even

Human papovavirus in Papanicolaou smears of urinary sediment detected by transmission electron microscopy.

A technique is described whereby inclusion-bearing cells identified by light microscopy in stained smears of urinary sediment were reprocessed for examination in the electron microscope. The nuclei of the abnormal cells were found to contain numerous virus particles, 35 nm in diameter, which morphologically resembled papovaviruses. The technique was applied in this case to identify further the virus producing the cytopathic changes in the Papanicolaou smear. It could be particularly valuable for retrospective studies of mounted cytological or histological material when suitable specimens are n

Falsely positive urinary cytology: pathologist's error or preclinical cancer?

The reluctance to accept urinary cytology as a diagnostic procedure in urologic cancer has been partially owing to a relatively high incidence of falsely positive results. The recent recognition of bladder cancer as a field change and the identification of urothelial dysplasia support the contention that these cytologic findings represent early neoplasia rather than laboratory errors. Of 64 patients with positive or suspicious urinary cytology short-term histologic confirmation could not be obtained in 10. Of these 10 patients review of the clinical and pathologic material was possible in 9 an
