Comparison of blood pressure measurements between the Huawei Watch D smartwatch application and the validated Omron M3 Intellisense device: Observational study.

Popular wearable devices that record a variety of health metrics, such as real-time blood pressure (BP), could play a role in detecting hypertension in the population. The objective of this study was to compare the validity of the Huawei D device with that of the Omron M3 Intellisense device used by health workers. Sampling was used to obtain patients with normal and abnormal BP. Measurements were taken on the wrist via the Huawei Watch D, while measurements were made using the Omron M3 Intellisense (prevalidated) device used by experienced healthcare personnel at the health centre. A total of

Development of Wearable Cyborg HAL Ankle Joint Unit to improve ankle joint function during gait.

Stroke, spinal cord injury, and cerebral palsy are central nervous system disorders that impair voluntary movement due to dysfunctions in the brain, nervous system, and muscles. Cybernics treatment of HAL is being promoted as a treatment for these diseases. Besides, patients with central nervous system disorders who have symptoms of equinus, drop foot, and spasticity experience difficulties improving their ankle joint function during gait because the ankle joint of HAL is a passive mechanism, which cannot reflect the wearer's intention. Thus, it is hypothesized that ankle joints can be improve

Novel mechanism by which geniposide alleviates rheumatoid arthritis: Targeted inhibition of SphK1 negatively regulates S1P signaling, promotes HIF-1α acetylation-mediated degradation and blocks the VEGF-induced synovial angiogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) poses a significant health concern and profoundly affects patients' quality of life. Synovial angiogenesis, a key link in maintaining the formation of the RA pannus, is the fundamental reason for its prolonged treatment. Geniposide (GE) is an iridoid glycoside derived from Gardenia jasminoides Ellis (GJ) that shows promise as a treatment for RA, but its potential mechanism of regulating synovial angiogenesis remains unclear. PURPOSE: This study aimed to elucidate the therapeutic effect of GE on RA angiogenesis and its potential underlying mechanism and sp

Pediatric Arnold-Chiari I Malformation With Syrinx Presenting With Unilateral Hand Weakness: A Case Report.

Diagnostic suspicion of Chiari I malformations (CM-I) can be challenging in the pediatric population due to highly variable neurologic symptoms and cognitive immaturity impairing symptom identification. Especially in an atypical presentation without obvious central neurological abnormalities, the diagnosis can often be missed. We present a case of a left-hand-dominant 14-year-old boy presenting to an orthopedic hand clinic with right-hand weakness, tingling, and impaired grip strength. The medical history was notable for mild scoliosis and acute lymphoblastic leukemia in remission treated with

Long-term potentiation and neurotransmitters expression and segregation are altered in the Metabolic Syndrome-associated dysautonomia.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) dynamically regulates the internal environment to maintain homeostasis. The ANS exhibits some forms of synaptic plasticity, including long-term potentiation (LTP) and plastic changes in neurotransmitter distribution, both of which may contribute to autonomic function. Dysautonomia refers to an abnormality in the function of the ANS, with an imbalance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. Dysautonomia has been reported in conditions such as stress, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome (MS). MS is a cluster of risk factors for cardiovascular disease

Dermatomal Contact Heat Evoked Potentials for the Detection of Subclinical Cervical Spinal Cord Injury in Asymptomatic Degenerative Cervical Cord Compression.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic degenerative cervical cord compression (ADCC) represents a premyelopathic stage of degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM), with high prevalence in older age and unclear management. Contact heat-evoked potentials (CHEPs) assess the integrity of the thermo-algesic somatosensory pathway and have shown the highest sensitivity among neurophysiological methods in detecting dysfunction in the centromedial and anterior spinal cord in DCM. METHODS: This cross-sectional cohort study evaluated the utility of upper extremity dermatomal C4, C6 and C8 CHEPs (dCHEPs) compared to sta

Repetitive unidirectional spinal tactile stimulation engages microglial Bmal1 pathways to promote synaptic remodeling in the mPFC of adolescent VPA-exposed mice.

BACKGROUND: Synaptic abnormalities are hallmark pathological features of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), contributing to the behavioral impairments frequently observed in these neurodevelopmental conditions. Microglia, as the brain's primary immune cells, are essential for synaptic refinement during adolescent development. Disrupted microglia-dependent synapse remodeling has been implicated in pathophysiology of ASDs, however, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely elucidated. In this context, repetitive unidirectional spinal tactile stimulation (RSTS) has emerged as a promising non-in

Effects of tocilizumab on renal function and oxidative stress in an experimental model of acute ischemic kidney injury.

INTRODUCTION: Acute kidney injury (AKI) results from renal damage that triggers oxidative stress, inducing apoptosis, structural abnormalities in cells and their organelles, and even mitochondrial DNA instability. Tocilizumab is a monoclonal antibody inhibitor of interleukin-6, initially used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and later tested for COVID-19 treatment, which may have a protective effect on AKI. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of tocilizumab on renal function and oxidative profile in rats with ischemic AKI. METHODS: This is an experimental study using a quantitative approach with

Study on the Synergistic Effect of Klotho and KRAS on Reducing Ferroptosis After Myocardial Infarction by Regulating RAP1/ERK Signaling Pathway.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is a coronary artery-related disease that seriously threatens human life and is the leading cause of sudden death worldwide, where a lack of nutrients and oxygen leads to an inflammatory response and death of cardiomyocytes. Ferroptosis is a form of non-apoptotic cell death associated with metabolic dysfunction, resulting in abnormal breakdown of glutamine and iron-dependent accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during metabolism. However, the molecular mechanism of ferroptosis in the pathogenesis of MI and the function of Klotho and KRAS on ferroptosis durin

Behavior of Locked Intramedullary Implants Spanning the Distal Femoral Growth Plate: Results From an Ovine Model.

INTRODUCTION: Safe retrograde femoral nail placement across the distal femoral growth plate could broaden fracture and reconstructive management options for skeletally immature patients, especially in resource-poor settings. Previous data suggested up to 7% of the distal femoral physis can be violated using a retrograde implant without subsequent growth arrest or inhibition. When the intramedullary implant is locked in the metaphysis, the bone will grow with the nail passing from the epiphysis to the metaphysis. However, the consequences of this growth across the physis are not well understood

Three cases of acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion predominantly manifesting generalized involuntary movements in the chronic phase.

BACKGROUND: Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion (AESD) usually has a favorable gross motor prognosis, and involuntary movements that occur after AESD are transient, typically resolving spontaneously during the recovery phase. CASE PRESENTATION: Three male patients without any underlying disease or history of perinatal insults developed AESD between 10 and 12 months of age. Case 1 remained choreoathetosis, dystonia, and ataxia, with the choreoathetosis resolving six years after onset. By age 10, he could sit without support and crawl but could not walk indepe

Gentisic acid protects Sprague-Dawley rats from myocardial infarction through reversing electrocardiographical, biochemical and histopathological abnormalities.

Gentisic acid (GA), a cytochrome P450 metabolite of the antiplatelet drug aspirin, exhibits smooth muscle relaxant, antiatherogenic, and antioxidant activities. It also has a protective role in hypertrophic heart failure, suggesting its role in the management of myocardial infarction (MI). This study aimed to explore the protective activity of GA in isoproterenol (ISO)-induced MI in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats in-vivo, followed by mechanistic investigation ex-vivo. SD rats were pretreated with different doses (5, 10, 15, and 20 mg/kg, i.p.) of GA for 21 days, followed by subcutaneous administrati

Exploring frequency-dependent and dynamic changes in brain connectivity of chronic back pain patients using degree centrality analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Back Pain (CBP) may lead to a reorganization of brain function, which can be observed through the indicator of degree centrality (DC). Traditional pain research has predominantly focused on static measurements of brain function within classical frequency bands, which may not fully capture the complexities of chronic pain. This study not only employed static frequency division but also incorporated dynamic analyses to capture the evolving nature of brain activity in chronic pain conditions. METHODS: This study included a total of 31 patients with CBP and 33 age- and gender-

A safety and feasibility randomized placebo controlled trial exploring electroencephalographic effective connectivity neurofeedback treatment for fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition contributing to significant disability worldwide. Neuroimaging studies identify abnormal effective connectivity between cortical areas responsible for descending pain modulation (pregenual anterior cingulate cortex, pgACC) and sensory components of pain experience (primary somatosensory cortex, S1). Neurofeedback, a brain-computer interface technique, can normalise dysfunctional brain activity, thereby improving pain and function. This study evaluates the safety, feasibility, and acceptability of a novel electroencephalography-based neurofeedback traini

Flecainide use in arrhythmic patients who have structural heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend the use of only on a limited basis in patients with normal or minimal structural heart disease. The CAST study, the only randomized controlled trials, showed increased mortality from long-term flecainide use in post-myocardial infarction (MI) patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). However, many later studies have revealed its safety when used in other structural heart diseases. OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the incidence of ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF) VT/VF in patients with structural he

Tulp3 deficiency results in ciliopathy phenotypes during zebrafish embryogenesis.

Ciliopathies, caused by defective cilia biogenesis or function, comprise a genetically and clinically diverse group of diseases. Primary cilia play pivotal roles in the regulation of a multitude of signalling pathways during development and tissue homeostasis. Cilia assembly, maintenance and signalling depend on intraflagellar transport (IFT). Tubby-like protein 3 (TULP3) functions as an adapter protein for the ciliary trafficking of diverse membrane cargos via an interaction with the IFT-A complex. Recently, we and others have shown that individuals carrying pathogenic TULP3 variants suffer f

Deep learning-quantified body composition from positron emission tomography/computed tomography and cardiovascular outcomes: a multicentre study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) is a vital diagnostic tool, especially in patients with cardiometabolic syndrome. Low-dose CT scans are routinely performed with PET for attenuation correction and potentially contain valuable data about body tissue composition. Deep learning and image processing were combined to automatically quantify skeletal muscle (SM), bone and adipose tissue from these scans and then evaluate their associations with death or myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: In PET MPI from three sites,

Mechanistic insights into the potentiation and toxicity mitigation of myocardial infarction treatment with salvianolate and ticagrelor.

BACKGROUND: Ticagrelor (TG), a first-line treatment for myocardial infarction (MI), is limited in its clinical application due to the risk of elevated uric acid (UA) levels. Salvianolate injection (SAL), an adjunctive therapy for MI, has been reported to have potential for UA reduction. Although the combined use of TG and SAL has been reported in clinical practice, no studies have focused on the optimal ratio for the combination or the mechanisms underlying their synergistic effects on MI and UA reduction. OBJECTIVE: This study follows the principle of enhancing efficacy and reducing toxicity
