Outcomes of Onyx embolisation as primary treatment for intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas over the past two decades.

BACKGROUND: Most current studies on Onyx are limited by small sample sizes and often involve its use in combination with other embolic materials, with few investigations specifically evaluating Onyx as a sole embolic agent. METHODS: Using the Dural Arteriovenous Fistula Research and Management in China (DREAM-INI) database, we identified patients who underwent primary treatment for dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) with Onyx-only embolisation. Data collected included patient demographics, comorbidities, clinical manifestations, DAVF location, arterial supply, Borden and Cognard classificatio

Global network and local vulnerabilities underlie brain atrophy across Parkinson's disease stages.

Parkinson's disease is associated with extensive structural brain changes. Recent work has proposed that the spatial pattern of disease pathology is shaped by both network spread and local vulnerability. However, few studies have assessed these biological frameworks in large patient samples across disease stages. Analysing the largest imaging cohort in Parkinson's disease to date (n = 3096 patients), we investigated the roles of network architecture and local brain features by relating regional abnormality maps to normative profiles of connectivity, intrinsic networks, cytoarchitectonics, neur

Reproducibility of Metabolic Mapping Using 2D Multi-Slice Short-TE and GABA-Edited Spin-Echo MRSI at 3T in a Single Protocol.

MRSI is a non-invasive tool for mapping metabolic distributions in multi-focal or other diseases where the location of abnormalities may be uncertain. High-concentration metabolites can be investigated at 3T using non-edited MRSI, whereas lower-concentration metabolites, such as GABA, typically require specialized editing techniques because of spectral overlap. This study reports on the reproducibility of a protocol containing both co-localized short-TE and GABA-edited multi-slice spin-echo 2D MRSI. Multi-slice, short-TE (TE 20 ms) and GABA-edited (TE 68 ms) MRSI at a nominal spatial resolutio

Can Qualitative Subfield Analysis on High-Resolution MRI Predict Histopathologic Subtypes of Hippocampal Sclerosis?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The International League Against Epilepsy classifies hippocampal sclerosis (HS) on the basis of the degree of neuronal loss affecting hippocampal subfields. Due to the differences in clinical presentation and postoperative outcomes, preoperative prediction of HS subtypes by MRI can aid in surgical decision-making. The current study aims to evaluate the utility of preoperative high-resolution MRI in this prediction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: With institutional ethics committee approval, we conducted a retrospective observational study in a single tertiary referral center.

Plasma Aβ42/40 predicts progression from Aβ-amyloid negative to positive PET scans.

BACKGROUND: The agreement between plasma Aβ42/40 and Aβ positron emission tomography (PET) is approximately 75 %, with ∼85 % of discrepancies due to positive plasma but negative PET results. It is unclear whether this reflects Aβ changes in plasma before PET-detectable. OBJECTIVES: To assess the influence of Aβ42/40 positivity on risk of progression to Aβ PET positivity, and feasibility of using plasma Aβ42/40 tests to enrich a primary prevention trial. DESIGN: A prospective longitudinal cohort study. SETTING: Participants of Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle study (AIBL), Alzhei

Compensatory circuits in resting-state networks of epilepsy patients with left-sided hippocampus sclerosis.

Left-sided temporal lobe epilepsy (LTLE) causes bihemispheric dysfunctions in large networks and poor cognitive performance. To address possible compensatory mechanism in the resting-state we investigated the functional alteration in LTLE patients with histologically proven sclerosis in the left hippocampal CA1-field compared to healthy controls. Eight drug resistant LTLE-patients and eight sex and age matched healthy controls were included in the study. The patients' hemispherical language and verbal memory function was determined by intracarotid amytal testing. Additional cognitive abilities

Neuroimaging Patterns of Recreational Drug Use in the Emergency Setting.

Recreational substance use is a global public health problem associated with preventable morbidity and mortality. Commonly consumed substances include alcohol, cannabinoids, opioids, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, cocaine, and inhalants. Given its prevalence in the emergency department, radiologists can expect to see neuroimaging manifestations of recreational drug use. Central nervous system imaging findings associated with recreational drug use vary widely depending on the drug of choice, the route of consumption, and the presence of impurities. Findings can be acute or chronic and include c

Relationship of cholinergic basal forebrain atrophy with the time course of Alzheimer's disease pathology and cognitive decline in adults with Down syndrome: a longitudinal cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Adults with Down syndrome (DS) display increased Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. The cholinergic system declines early in the AD continuum and relates to cognitive and functional decline. We aimed to identify the timeline of cholinergic decline in relation to hippocampal atrophy within the AT(N) framework in DS. METHODS: Three-hundred fifty-eight adults with DS were assessed for longitudinal changes in cholinergic basal forebrain and hippocampal volume, amyloid positron emission tomography (PET), tau PET, and cognitive performance. RESULTS: Amyloid PET increased at 36.5 years ol

Towards contrast- and pathology-agnostic clinical fetal brain MRI segmentation using SynthSeg.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has played a crucial role in fetal neurodevelopmental research. Structural annotations of MR images are an important step for quantitative analysis of the developing human brain, with Deep Learning providing an automated alternative for this otherwise tedious manual process. However, segmentation performances of Convolutional Neural Networks often suffer from domain shift, where the network fails when applied to subjects that deviate from the distribution with which it is trained on. In this work, we aim to train networks capable of automatically segmenting fet

Individualized Subcortical Functional Brain Organization Is Related to Diagnosis, Symptoms, and Behavior in Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individualized brain systems mapping is a recently developed method for understanding person-specific functional brain organization using human functional magnetic resonance imaging data. Abnormal structure and function in the subcortex have previously been implicated in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the systems-level functional organization of the subcortex in MDD has yet to be investigated. Moreover, almost all prior studies of brain systems in MDD have used group-level functional brain mapping that assumes organizational homogeneity across individual

Genetics and Brain Health in Adults With Congenital Heart Disease: A Consensus Statement From the ACHD/Neuro 2024 Conference.

With improvement in medical and surgical care, the number of adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) is soaring. Adults with CHD commonly have impairments in brain health. However, significant gaps in knowledge remain regarding the relevant types and prevalence of neurologic and psychiatric risk and their associated risk factors. We sought to review current evidence, identify gaps in knowledge, and develop key next steps to improve scientific understanding and clinical care. Effects of swLORETA Z-score neurofeedback in Z-coherence of the fronto-limbic circuit in patients with major depressive disorder.

Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibit abnormal hypercoherence within the fronto-limbic circuit (FLC), involving core brain regions such as the ventrolateral, ventromedial, dorsolateral, dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (vlPFC, vmPFC, dlPFC, dmPFC), and the amygdala (AMY). This study examined the effects of standardized weighted low-resolution electromagnetic tomography Z-score neurofeedback (swLZNFB) on LFC coherence and emotional symptoms. Sixty-one MDD patients were assigned to either the swLZNFB or control groups. All participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI

Abnormal spatial and temporal concordance between local spontaneous intrinsic brain activity measures across three major psychiatric disorders.

Fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) are frequently used to assess local spontaneous brain activity and identify functional abnormalities in schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), yet their spatial and temporal coupling alterations in these psychiatric disorders remain unclear. Here, resting-state functional MRI data were collected from a sample of patients with SZ, BD, and ADHD as well as healthy controls. Kendall's W was utilized to calculate volume-wise and voxel-wise concordance b

Selective Disruption of Salience-Network Anterior Insula Connectivity in Misophonia: A Disorder-Specific Neural Signature.

Misophonia, a disorder characterized by extreme aversion to certain sounds, affects 5%-20% of the general population, yet mechanisms are still largely unknown. Recent neuroimaging studies have reported abnormal functional connectivity of the anterior insula to various limbic, salience, and motor regions in smaller samples of misophonic individuals versus controls, suggesting potential differences in underlying attentional or emotional processes. These findings prompt questions about the insular connectivity profile in larger samples of adults, what patterns emerge when the samples span a wider

Functional network organization is locally atypical in children, adolescents, and young adults with congenital heart disease.

Children, adolescents, and young adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) frequently experience disruptions in neurodevelopment affecting their executive functioning and other cognitive abilities, which in turn can impact academic performance, psychosocial adjustment, and overall quality of life. This exploratory study aims to investigate the impact of CHD on functional brain network connectivity and cognitive function, with a particular focus on executive functioning. Rather than relying on a single network construction method or arbitrary thresholds, our study methodically employed both we

Emotion Processing in Schizophrenia: Insights From a Brain Imaging Study Comparing Patients, Siblings, and Healthy Controls.

Abnormal facial emotion recognition has been proposed as a potential endophenotype for schizophrenia, as both patients with schizophrenia and their healthy relatives show difficulties in recognizing negative facial emotions. In psychiatric disorders, brain functioning is considered highly informative for endophenotype research. However, recent studies have raised questions about our current understanding of the neural correlates of emotion recognition across the schizophrenia spectrum, pointing out two major limitations in previous research. First, individual fMRI studies and meta-analyses hav
