The comparison of the watertight and non-watertight dural closure in supratentorial craniotomy: A single-institute 10-year experience with 698 patients.

Watertight dural closure (WTDC) is considered crucial by many neurosurgeons in cranial base surgery, infratentorial craniotomy, and spinal intradural procedure. Whether WTDC also reduce complications remains controversial in supratentorial craniotomy. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between WTDC and CSF-related complications in supratentorial craniotomy for the resection of space-occupying lesions. A retrospective analysis of patients who suffered from intracranial space-occupying lesions at Beijing Ditan Hospital between January 2011 and December 2021 was conduc

Percutaneous balloon compression for secondary trigeminal neuralgia caused by cerebellopontine angle tumors.

OBJECTIVE: The most common cause for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is vascular compression at the nerve root, and microvascular decompression (MVD) has been proven to be an effective surgical approach for this disease. For some patients, TN is secondary to the intracranial space-occupying lesion, and tumor resection is usually recommended. However, it is not easy to determine proper treatments when craniotomy is infeasible. In this study, we aim to explore the clinical outcomes of percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) for secondary TN caused by cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors. METHODS: From

Balo's concentric sclerosis a rare variant of multiple sclerosis in a Nigerian adult male: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Balo's concentric sclerosis (BCS) is a rare variant of multiple sclerosis (MS) that usually runs a benign course. Typically, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) shows concentric lamella of areas of demyelination alternating with normal zones of myelin preservation. Clinically, it may be mistaken for other intracranial space-occupying lesions, especially in our subregion, where neuroimaging facilities are scarce or not affordable. The authors report a rare case of BCS in a young Nigerian male diagnosed and managed in Enugu, Nigeria. This is possibly the first reported case in sub

Partial response to Chinese patent medicine Kangliu pill for adult glioblastoma: A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma is the most common type of brain tumor and is invariably fatal, with a mean survival time of 8-15 mo for recently diagnosed tumors, and a 5-year survival rate of only 7.2%. The standard treatment for newly diagnosed glioblastoma includes surgery followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy and further adjuvant temozolomide. However, the prognosis remains poor and long-term survival is rare. This report aimed to demonstrate a new therapeutic strategy for the treatment of glioblastoma. CASE SUMMARY: A patient was referred to the Department of Neurosurgery with an intracrani

Complete ophthalmoplegia secondary to idiopathic intracranial hypertension managed successfully with dural sinus stenting: A case and systematic review.

Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) typically occurs in obese (BMI >30 kg/m2) females of childbearing age in the absence of any apparent intracranial space-occupying lesion. Patients typically present with headache, nausea, vomiting, tinnitus, and blurry vision secondary to increased intracranial pressure, with more severe cases involving cranial neuropathies and ophthalmological manifestations. Complete ophthalmoplegia is a rare event in IIH. In such cases, aggressive management with pharmacological, endovascular, and surgical intervention is essential to hasten recovery and limit long

Case Report : Li-Fraumeni Syndrome with Central Nervous System Tumors in Two Siblings.

BACKGROUND: Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a rare autosomal dominant cancer predisposition syndrome caused by germline TP53 gene mutations. It is characterized by high risk of early-onset cancer, and has been confirmed as associated with multiple tumors clinically. So pediatricians should be more alert to LFS in children with tumors. Choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) is a rare, malignant tumor which account for less than 1% of all central nervous system (CNS) tumors. However, when such tumorigenesis occurs, it is important to be vigilant for the presence of LFS. CASE PRESENTATION: The first patie

The Effect of Data Length on the Assessment of Dynamic Cerebral Autoregulation with Transfer Function Analysis in Neurological ICU Patients.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral autoregulation plays an important role in safeguarding adequate cerebral perfusion and reducing the risk of secondary brain injury, which is highly important for patients in the neurological intensive care unit (neuro-ICU). Although the consensus white paper suggests that a minimum of 5 min of data are needed for assessing dynamic cerebral autoregulation with transfer function analysis (TFA), it remains unknown if the length of these data is valid for patients in the neuro-ICU, of whom are notably different than the general populations. We aimed to investigate the effect o

Clinical and imaging features of idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

OBJECTIVES: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a syndrome that excludes secondary causes such as intracranial space-occupying lesion, hydrocephalus, cerebrovascular disease, and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. If not be treated promptly and effectively, IIH can cause severe, permanent vision disability and intractable, disabling headache. This study aims to explore the clinical and image features for IIH, to help clinicians to understand this disease, increase the diagnose rate, and improve the outcomes of patients. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 15 cases of IIH that were ad

Combining Serum Cystatin C and Urinary N-Acetyl-Beta-D-Glucosaminidase Improves the Precision for Acute Kidney Injury Diagnosis after Resection of Intracranial Space-Occupying Lesions.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) is frequent and associated with adverse outcomes. Unfortunately, the early diagnosis of AKI remains a challenge. Combining functional and tubular damage biomarkers may provide better precision for AKI detection. However, the diagnostic accuracy of this combination for AKI after neurosurgery is unclear. Serum cystatin C (sCysC) and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (uACR) are considered functional biomarkers, while urinary N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (uNAG) represents tubular damage. We aimed to assess the performances of these clinical availa

Neurotoxoplasmosis mimicking primary brain malignancy.

Toxoplasma gondii infection is an uncommon and potentially life-threatening condition in immunocompromised patients in the setting of solid organ transplantation. We present the case of cerebral toxoplasmosis which presented as a solitary intracranial space-occupying lesion in a patient who received a combined kidney and pancreas transplant more than twenty years ago. Initially, the lesion was considered as a primary brain malignancy based on brain imaging but surprisingly the brain biopsy led to the correct diagnosis.

Acute comitant esotropia in a very young child due to combined mechanism: A case report.

We report a case of esotropia with high hyperopia in a 3-year-old female child. She was initially treated with hyperopic correction and noted to have residual esotropia, which was diagnosed as partial accommodative esotropia. Later when she presented with headache, she was diagnosed to have an intracranial tumour. To our surprise, after neurosurgical excision of tumour, her non-accommodative component of the esotropia resolved over 1 year implying that the intracranial lesion was an additional causative factor for this acute onset Accommodative esotropia. The child attained Orthophoria with th
