Recommendations for structural magnetic resonance imaging in infants with first afebrile seizure or new onset epilepsy: Evidence-based recommendations from the ILAE Neuroimaging Task Force.

Infants aged 1-24 months with new onset epilepsy frequently present with structural brain abnormalities, yet no updated evidence-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guidelines exist for this population. The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Neuroimaging Task Force developed evidence-based recommendations for structural brain MRI in infants with a first afebrile seizure or new onset epilepsy. A multidisciplinary panel defined three PICO (patients, intervention, comparison group, outcome under consideration) questions, conducted a systematic review (PROSPERO [Prospective Register o

Disrupted Modular Integration of the Reward System Is Associated With Social Deficits in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with atypical social communication as a core symptom. Variations in social information processing in individuals with ASD are associated with the social brain, which encompasses four specific subnetworks, that is, reward system, theory of mind network, mirror neuron system, and face perception network. However, the relationship between neural mechanisms of altered social functioning and modular integration of these subnetworks within the social brain remains unclear in ASD. With resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) data

Reduced cerebral blood flow in obstructive sleep apnea: A meta-analysis of SPECT and MRI studies.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with increased risk of neurovascular and neurodegenerative disorders. However, cerebral blood flow (CBF) abnormalities in OSA remains unclear due to mixed findings across studies. METHOD: We conducted a meta-analysis and activation likelihood estimation (ALE) analyses of neuroimaging data to clarify the nature and extent of CBF changes in patients with OSA. RESULTS: Among MRI studies employing arterial spin labelling (ASL) (k = 6), whole-brain CBF was significantly reduced in OSA patients compared to controls (SMD=-0.36, Z=-3.22, p=.001; CI:

Early neurodevelopmental brain perfusion abnormalities and functional connectivity findings in infants with Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by distinct eating behaviors that evolve from early feeding difficulties to later hyperphagia. Early brain abnormalities remain poorly understood, with no data on brain perfusion during infancy. This study investigated early brain perfusion and functional connectivity in infants with PWS and their associations with feeding and social functioning. METHOD: Twenty-seven infants (mean age 3 months) were included in this prospective study. Thirteen genetically confirmed PWS infants (mean age 2.7 ± 1.2 months) und

Unexpected Cortical Uptake on [ 18 F]FP-CIT PET/CT Revealing Delayed Brain Metastases From Renal Cell Carcinoma.

A 77-year-old man with a remote history of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) presented with gait disturbance and underwent delayed [ 18 F]FP-CIT PET/CT to evaluate Parkinsonism. The scan showed focal uptake in the temporoparietal and insular cortices with a focal striatal photopenic defect. Brain MRI confirmed enhancing metastases corresponding to the cortical foci and attributed the striatal abnormality to chronic infarction. Hypervascular metastases such as RCC may exhibit cortical [ 18 F]FP-CIT uptake, possibly from increased perfusion and/or altered blood-brain barrier permeability, reflecting no

Aberrant inter-subject functional heterogeneity in frontoparietal and attention networks marks tobacco use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use disorder (TUD) represents a significant global health challenge. Inter-subject variability in functional connectivity (IVFC) serves as a key neural indicator for explaining cognitive differences; however, its characteristics and genetic underpinnings in the TUD individuals remain unclear. METHODS: This study included 200 male TUD patients and 185 male healthy controls (HCs) who underwent magnetic resonance imaging scanning. IVFC was constructed at both the regional (ROI) and network levels. Five machine learning methods, including the support vector machines (SVM) were

Striosome-Like Structural Connectivity Is Reduced in the Rostral Putamen in Anxiety Disorder.

Anxiety disorders affect roughly a third of adults, and treatment of anxiety-related symptoms costs more than any other mental health condition. Symptoms often begin in adolescence and are usually lifelong. Identifying shared neuroanatomical features of anxiety is essential for understanding its causes and improving treatments. Developmental abnormalities in the striatum, an obligate node in cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical networks, could predispose to the diverse symptoms of anxiety. The striatum is comprised of two interdigitated tissue compartments, striosome and matrix, that have differen

Subarachnoid space in infancy and early childhood: a systematic review of measurements.

BACKGROUND: Benign enlargement of the subarachnoid space (BESS) is a condition characterized by widened subarachnoid spaces, typically associated with macrocephaly or increasing head circumference during infancy or early childhood. Often described as idiopathic and self-limiting, BESS has also been associated with developmental delays and spontaneous subdural collections. Yet, complete interrogation of these associations is limited by lack of normative subarachnoid space characterization and standardized diagnostic criteria. OBJECTIVE: This project aimed to review and synthesize literature on

Clinical use and radiological yield of magnetic resonance fingerprinting in epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) is a novel paradigm for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that efficiently generates multiparametric quantitative tissue property maps with a single acquisition. Its quantitative nature offers many advantages over conventional MRI. Although interest in MRF for epilepsy research has grown in recent years, systematic evaluation of its radiological and clinical value as a supplementary imaging modality is limited. METHODS: We reviewed the diagnostic utility of MRF imaging for 100 epilepsy patients undergoing presurgical evaluation. MRF quantitati

Unveiling Pathological Lipid Droplet Accumulation of Dopaminergic Neurons in Parkinson's Disease via a Super-Retentive Fluorescent Probe.

Lipid droplets are highly dynamic organelles in nerve cells and are essential for the function of the central nervous system. The abnormal accumulation of lipid droplets in dopaminergic neurons, found in Parkinson's disease (PD) cells and animal models, presents as a promising target for PD diagnosis. However, previously reported fluorescent probes are unsuitable for in vivo long-term tracking of lipid droplets, limiting their applications in animal models of PD. Here, we developed three lipid droplet-targeted probes, named s-CBTA, b-CBTA, and LD-b-PBTA, which share similar chemical structures

A cohort approach to focal cortical dysplasia type II: A 10-year management overview at an adult epilepsy referral centre.

INTRODUCTION: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) type II, or Taylor-type FCD, is considered a common cause of drug-resistant epilepsy, with specific characteristics. In many cases, these patients respond well to surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included patients with FCD type II who had undergone an epilepsy protocol brain MRI scan, evaluated by an expert neuroradiologist, since 2012. We performed a retrospective observational analysis of diagnostic variables, clinical correlations with presurgical evaluation studies, indications for surgery, and response. RESULTS: The sample included 50

Abnormal Activation and Connection in Middle Frontal Gyrus: A Potential Imaging Feature for Facial Synkinesis Comorbid Depression.

Patients with facial synkinesis (FS) comorbid depression may experience aggravated symptoms of perceived synkinesis and poorer recovery outcomes. Exploring imaging features associated with depressive symptoms could help us better understand disease conditions and formulate appropriate rehabilitation plans. Although abnormal activation in the middle frontal gyrus (MFG) has been reported in depression patients, whether it represents an imaging correlate of depressive symptoms in patients with FS is still unknown. Therefore, a total of 52 participants (20 normal controls [NCs], 32 patients) with

Rigorous genetic diagnosis review in natural history studies.

BACKGROUND: Leukodystrophies are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by white matter abnormalities on brain magnetic resonance imaging. Clinical, biochemical, molecular, and/or neuroimaging findings collectively support the diagnosis confirmation. The heterogeneous and overlapping clinical presentations of different leukodystrophies and non-diagnostic molecular testing pose a significant challenge to establishing a definitive diagnosis in these rare diseases. The Myelin Disorders Biorepository Project is an observational research program that aims to esta

Clinical, Behavioral and Neuroradiological Phenotype in an Italian Cohort of Patients With Xia Gibbs Syndrome: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study and Systematic Literature Review.

Heterozygous variants in the AHDC1 gene are associated with Xia Gibbs Syndrome (XGS), a genetic disorder with a highly variable phenotype. Cognitive impairment, motor delay, language delay, neonatal hypotonia, and sleep apnea are considered "cardinal" signs of the disease. In a multicenter cross-sectional study, we analyzed the genetic, epileptological, behavioral, and neuroradiological features of 15 patients with XGS harboring heterozygous variants in AHDC1. The phenotype of our patient cohort is almost overlapping with that already reported in the literature. Seizures begin between 2 and 9

Disrupted neural response timing and duration during hand movement preparation in schizophrenia spectrum disorder: An fMRI study.

Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) feature deficits in movement intention, predictive mechanisms, and agency. While prior work characterised BOLD amplitude during movement preparation and temporal dynamics across the entire movement period, it remains unknown whether preparatory neural (BOLD) response timing and duration are selectively impaired in SSD. We analysed fMRI data from 20 SSD patients and 20 healthy controls during active and passive hand movements with video feedback (own vs. other hand). Preparatory and executory BOLD responses were modelled separately using the canonical HRF

Enhancing glioma progression prediction: Unsupervised clustering of whole-brain magnetic resonance spectroscopy data for surgical planning.

BACKGROUND: The inevitable progression of high-grade gliomas has prompted a need for data-backed identification of compromised tissue prior to detection on traditional serial imaging. Whole-brain magnetic resonance spectroscopy (WB-MRS) can fill this role to classify glioma progression prior to contrast enhancement. Voxel-level data can differentiate areas of perilesional tissue under supervised machine learning (ML) and has been shown to predict the likelihood of tumor progression within six months. In this study, we aim to improve the spatial utility of WB-MRS ML through unsupervised ML clus
