Esophageal lung in a 4-month-old infant.

Esophageal lung is an extremely rare congenital malformation characterized by an abnormal connection between the esophagus and the bronchial tree, without communication with the airway. We present the case of a 4-month-old female patient who was admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of pneumonia. Complementary studies confirmed the presumptive diagnosis of esophageal lung. Surgical treatment was then decided upon, and a pneumonectomy with esophageal repair was performed. The patient progressed favorably.

Aberrant Drainage to the Right Upper Pulmonary Vein From the Right Middle or Lower Lung: How Common?

BACKGROUND: Anatomical variations in pulmonary vein (PV) drainage are critical considerations during right upper or middle lobectomy, as unrecognized aberrant veins can increase surgical risks. Although such variations have been described in anatomical and radiologic studies, surgically verified data under a standardized thoracoscopic approach remain limited. This study investigates the prevalence and patterns of aberrant venous drainage from the right middle lobe (RML) and right lower lobe (RLL) into the right upper pulmonary vein (RUPV). METHODS: A total of 213 patients undergoing right upp

Pulmonary Lobar Torsion following Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction with Endobronchial Valves: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) with endobronchial valves (EBVs) is an effective and minimally invasive alternative to lung volume reduction surgery for some patients with severe emphysema. While generally well tolerated, it may lead to rare but serious complications. Pulmonary lobar torsion and secondary infarction are known postoperative complications after thoracic surgery but have not been previously reported following BLVR. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old woman with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease underwent EBV placement in the right upper lobe, with a goo

Diverse histopathological patterns in Fleischner-defined interstitial lung abnormalities: Radiologic-Pathologic correlation and reclassification using 2025 American Thoracic Society statement.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA) are CT-detected interstitial abnormalities that may represent early-stage interstitial lung disease (ILD). However, histopathologic correlations remain limited, with previous studies reporting conflicting results. In 2025, the American Thoracic Society (ATS) established criteria defining the boundary between ILA and ILD. This study aimed to investigate the histopathological spectrum of Fleischner-defined ILA, correlate findings with CT features and outcomes, and reclassify cases according to 2025 ATS criteria. METHODS: This retrospective study

Experimental Lung Ultrasound Scoring in a Murine Model of Aspiration Pneumonia: Challenges and Diagnostic Perspectives.

Background: Aspiration pneumonia (AP) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality, yet non-invasive tools for monitoring lung injury in preclinical models are limited. Lung ultrasound (LUS) is widely used clinically, but existing murine scoring systems lack anatomical resolution and have not been validated for aspiration-related injury. Methods: We developed the Modified Lung Edema Ultrasound Score (MLEUS), a region-structured adaptation of the Mouse Lung Ultrasound Score (MoLUS), designed to accommodate the heterogeneous and gravity-dependent injury patterns characteristic of murine AP.

Shared mineral pathology in malignant and non-malignant lung tissues of non-smoking women from Xuan Wei, China.

Household coal smoke was evidenced to cause the uniquely high lung cancer mortalities in Xuan Wei, China. Lung cancer screening in local villagers found concurrently high prevalence of interstitial pneumonia. What could be the shared hazard linking those pathologies? Could it be some coal-derived mineral deposit in lungs that causes both fibrotic and malignant changes? A case-control study was conducted by recruiting 50 lung cancer cases and 30 pseudotumor controls among non-smoking women from Xuan Wei, China. The severity of interstitial lung abnormalities (ILAs) was compared between cases an

A case report of pneumopericardium secondary to suspected bronchopericardial fistula post lung resection: diagnosis and management guided by transthoracic echocardiography.

Pneumopericardium is a rare, life-threatening condition characterized by abnormal gas accumulation in the pericardial cavity, most commonly secondary to trauma, surgical procedures, or fistulous communications with adjacent hollow organs. We report a 59-year-old male patient who presented with chest pain. Initial transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) only detected minimal pericardial effusion, failing to identify pneumopericardium. Subsequent serial TTE monitoring progressively revealed pathognomonic signs of pneumopericardium, including microbubble swirl, air gap artifact, and a definitive flu

Left-right relationship-aware 3D volume classification method.

PURPOSE: This paper proposes a left-right (LR) relationship-aware classification model for 3D volumetric images (3D volume). Bilateral symmetry (LR relationship) is an essential property of the human body that can be used to detect abnormalities and understand anatomical structures. Checking the difference and similarity between the left and right anatomical structures is very important in diagnosis. We propose an LR relationship-aware classification model of 3D volume. METHODS: The proposed model employs an image feature extraction process from LR symmetric positions of human anatomy from 3D

Completion of Fontan circulation does not affect the low longitudinal contribution to stroke volume in patients with single ventricles.

Ventricular function is vital in patients with single ventricles but repeated surgeries and changes in ventricular volume load may change the relation between longitudinal and radial function. To expand the knowledge of cardiac mechanics in this population, the aim of this study was to assess longitudinal and radial contribution to stroke volume using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in patients before and after Fontan operation. We also aimed to assess whether the atrioventricular coupling was intact in these patients despite multiple pericardiotomies. Twelve children underwent CMR be

Evaluation of right ventricle indices changes after pneumonectomy and lobectomy surgery by ERNV scan.

INTRODUCTION: Lung resection surgeries, including lobectomy and pneumonectomy, are cornerstone treatments for lung cancer and other severe pulmonary conditions. Despite their therapeutic benefits, these procedures can compromise cardiopulmonary function, potentially increasing right ventricular (RV) workload due to reduced pulmonary vascular capacity. Such changes may precipitate RV dysfunction, even in patients with normal preoperative cardiac profiles, contributing to postoperative morbidity like dyspnea and arrhythmias. While pulmonary function tests are standard for preoperative risk asses

Detection of Swallowing Abnormalities in Pediatric FEES Recordings Using Rule-Based and Model-Based Methods.

Pediatric swallowing dysfunction (SwD) poses serious health risks, including aspiration, malnutrition, and recurrent respiratory infections, making early and accurate diagnosis essential for preventing long-term sequelae such as chronic lung disease and growth failure. Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is widely used for direct visualization of the swallowing mechanism in children, offering advantages over fluoroscopy such as bedside accessibility and radiation-free imaging. During FEES, patients swallow green-dyed liquid with an endoscope positioned in the throat. Interpre

[Evaluation and clinical management of interstitial lung abnormalities : Position paper of the Austrian Society of Pneumology (ÖGP) and the Austrian Radiological Society (ÖRG) 2026].

Interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA) are findings detected on computed tomography (CT) that potentially reflect early stages of interstitial lung disease (ILD). Their prevalence ranges between 3-10% in the general population, with higher rates observed in older individuals and smokers. ILA include bilateral and nonhypostasis-related ground-glass opacities, reticular abnormalities, traction bronchiectasis, lung architectural distortion and honeycombing, affecting more than 5% of a lung zone. The risk of progression to ILD varies between 20-80%, depending on the ILA subtype and associated risk

Multi-task interactive feature transfer network for dual-energy-like chest radiography image synthesis using CT data.

Accurate synthesis of bone and bone-suppression (B-S) images from chest radiographs is crucial for enhancing diagnostic precision in detecting lung abnormalities. Most deep learning methods, which typically generate only one type of image, limit diagnostic scope. This study introduces a novel multi-task interactive feature transfer network (MIFT-Net), which synthesizes dual-energy-like chest images simultaneously using computed tomography (CT) data. MIFT-Net employs a phased feature extraction and separation strategy to progressively generate clear bone and B-S images. By fusing features from

MoCo + ROVir: Synergy Between Respiratory Motion Compensation and Cardiac Receive Region Focusing for Cardiac MRI.

PURPOSE: To improve cardiac motion representation and reduce artifacts for cardiac- and respiratory-resolved imaging through a synergistic combination of retrospective cardiac phased array RF focusing and rigid respiratory motion compensation (MoCo). METHODS: We incorporated cardiac receive focusing using region-optimized virtual coils (ROVir) and MoCo into cardiac- and respiratory-resolved low-rank tensor (LRT) reconstruction, hypothesizing that the combination of MoCo + ROVir would prioritize the LRT representation of cardiac motion over respiratory motion. We compared LRT, MoCo-LRT, ROVir-

Right pulmonary agenesis with ventricular septal defect and partial anomalous left pulmonary artery sling: a case report.

Partial anomalous left pulmonary artery sling is an exceptionally rare congenital anomaly, and its coexistence with ventricular septal defect and right lung agenesis has not been reported. We describe a neonate presenting with right lung agenesis, a large ventricular septal defect, partial anomalous left pulmonary artery sling, and congenital tracheal stenosis. Following surgical repair of the ventricular septal defect at 73 days of age, the patient showed marked improvement in respiratory status and was discharged home without respiratory support.
