Stimulation of growth in Piper betle L. via induced systemic resistance (ISR) under combined pathogenic stress through priming of Jasmonic acid.

BACKGROUND: Choosing an orthopedic surgeon is a pivotal decision shaped by clinical competence and multiple non-clinical influences. While surgical expertise and outcomes are fundamental considerations, patients and their families also weigh communication quality, cultural alignment, institutional reputation, financial constraints, and increasingly, digital information sources. Understanding these determinants is crucial to delivering patient-centered orthopedic care. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following Arksey and O'Malley's framework and reported in accordance with PRISMA-ScR g

Iturin A disrupts Cryptococcus neoformans membrane integrity, attenuates virulence, and synergizes with amphotericin B.

BACKGROUND: Use of the ergot-derived dopamine receptor agonists (cabergoline and pergolide) is associated with an increased risk of cardiac valvulopathy. Pergolide was withdrawn from the US market in 2007 because of the risk of valvular heart disease, while the European Medicines Agency (EMA) required a reduction in the maximum daily dosage of cabergoline and pergolide from 6 mg/day to 3 mg/day in 2008. In Japan, the package inserts of both drugs were revised in April 2007 to request that physicians conduct periodic ultrasonic cardiography (UCG) examinations for patients taking cabergoline or

Radiologically occult nasopharyngeal carcinoma: the importance of clinical suspicion and repeat biopsy.

A man in his 40s undergoing long-term otolaryngology surveillance following an initial diagnosis of a left-sided nasopharyngeal lesion classified as carcinoma in situ re-presented approximately 3 years later with intermittent aural fullness and tinnitus. Flexible nasendoscopy demonstrated subtle unilateral polypoidal change at the left eustachian tube orifice and fossa of Rosenmüller (FOR), while MRI remained non-diagnostic, with no discrete nasopharyngeal mass or skull base abnormality. Given persistent focal endoscopic abnormalities discordant with reassuring imaging, targeted endoscopic bio

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

A morphometric analysis of the cranial base in trigonocephaly.

Trigonocephaly occurs when the metopic suture fuses prematurely. Few studies have documented the morphometry of the entire anterior cranium in trigonocephaly and not on the morphometric changes to the cranial fossae alone. Thus, this study aimed to determine and compare the dimensions of the anterior cranial fossa (ACF) in trigonocephaly and control groups. Additionally, volumetric assessments of the middle and posterior cranial fossae (MCF and PCF) were analysed to determine the amount of compensatory growth in these regions. Anatomical landmarks were used to measure the morphometry of the AC

Study of attenuation characteristics for novel neonatal head phantom in diagnostic radiology using Monte Carlo simulations and experiments.

This study presents the design and validation of a neonatal head phantom using innovative heterogeneous composite materials customized to replicate the x-ray attenuation properties of neonatal cranial structures. Analysis of Hounsfield Unit (HU) data from 338 neonatal head CT scans informed the design of epoxy resin-based composites with additives such as sodium bicarbonate, fumed silica, and acetone to simulate bone, brain matter, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and hyperdense abnormalities. The cranial bone substitute (60% epoxy resin, 40% sodium bicarbonate) achieved a density of 1.60 g cm-3, wit

A Case of McCune-Albright Syndrome with External Auditory Canal Stenosis Treated with Image-Guided Surgery System-Assisted Temporal Bone Surgery.

McCune-Albright syndrome is a disorder of fibrous bone dysplasia complicated by skin pigmentation and endocrine abnormalities. Although temporal bone lesions are rare, surgical treatment is required when external auditory canal (EAC) stenosis develops. However, no consensus has been reached regarding surgical approaches. To safely perform surgery for temporal bone malformations, knowing the exact location of the critical organs in the temporal bone in relation to the bony lesion is important. Otherwise, intraoperative orientation may be lost owing to differences from the normal anatomy. Althou

An accessory sphenoidal foramen of the middle cranial fossa detected on computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: The skull base depicts significant morphological variability, which is frequently described due to its neurosurgical significance. The middle cranial fossa's accessory foramen has rarely been described. MATERIALS: A 53-year-old female patient's computed tomography (CT) scan was further investigated for its unusual morphology. RESULTS: On the left-sided middle cranial fossa, an accessory sphenoidal foramen (ASF) was observed, located 3.3 mm posterior to the foramen rotundum (FR) and 5.5 mm anterior to the foramen ovale (FO). Extracranially, the ASF opened into the infratemporal fo

Cranial morphology in 3-dimensional laser scans before and after open craniectomy for scaphocephaly.

Scaphocephaly occurs by premature synostosis of the sagittal suture and makes up 40% of all craniosynostoses. With various operative techniques available, the indication for surgery is mainly aesthetic, and the evaluation of postoperative results can vary severely. This study presents a modified open, butterfly-shaped craniectomy for the surgical correction of scaphocephaly. The cranial morphology before and after the surgery is assessed using 3-dimensional laser scans. We retrieved the clinical data of 41 patients operated on at our institution between 2012 and 2022. Pre- and postoperative 3-

Revisiting a Rare Anomaly Described 25 Years Ago in the AJNR: A Journey from Pediatric Hemifacial Microsomia and Middle Cranial Fossa Aplasia to CSF-Lymphatic Fistula and Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension as an Adult.

This report presents a unique case of a 39-year-old woman with a congenital unilateral aplasia of the middle cranial fossa floor associated with atypical hemifacial microsomia, initially described in a case report at age 14, who later developed a transosseous CSF-lymphatic fistula through the C1 vertebral body. Dynamic CT cisternography confirmed the diagnosis, and a transnasal percutaneous fibrin glue occlusion successfully reversed the patient's brain sag and improved her symptoms. This case highlights the evolving understanding of CSF dynamics and the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges p
