Recent advancements in feature extraction and classification based bone cancer detection - a systematic review.

Cancer is a deadly disease that occurs due to the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Bone cancer is the third most occurring disease; approximately 10,000 patients suffer from bone cancer in India annually. It can lead to death if not diagnosed in the earlier stage. Bone cancer occurs in four stages as follows: in stage 1 cancer does not spread to other bone parts, in stage 2 cancer looks similar to stage 1 but becomes dangerous, in stage 3 cancer spreads to one or two bone parts and in stage 4 cancer spreads to other body parts. Timely diagnosis of bone cancer is challenging due to the un

[Idiopathic hypertrophic pachymeningitis].

The article presents a case of idiopathic hypertrophic pachymeningitis of a 61-year-old male patient with severe cephalgia and progressive neuropathy of the oculomotor nerves. The diagnosis was confirmed by MRI with gadolinium, which revealed thickening of the dura mater with accumulation of paramagnetic in the convexital parts of the frontal and temporal regions, as well as on the base of the skull and tentorium. During the use of pulse therapy with glucocorticosteroids (GCS) the symptoms regressed, but when the therapy was stopped, there was a relapse of ptosis and oculomotor abnormalities o

Fibrous Dysplasia of the Ethmoid Bone Diagnosed in a 10-Year-Old Patient.

Fibrous dysplasia is an uncommon bone disorder affecting various parts of the skeleton, often affecting facial and cranial bones. In this case, a 10-year-old patient was diagnosed with fibrous dysplasia of the ethmoid sinus at an early age. The patient has experienced nasal congestion, snores, and worsening nasal patency since 2019. A CT scan revealed an expansive proliferative lesion, likely from the frontal or ethmoid bone, protruding into the nasal cavity, ethmoid sinus, and right orbit. The tumor causes bone defects in the area of the nasal bone, leading to fluid retention in the periphera

Detecting missing teeth on PMCT using statistical shape modeling.

The identification of teeth in 3D medical images can be a first step for victim identification from scant remains, for comparison of ante- and postmortem images or for other forensic investigations. We evaluate the performance of a tooth detection approach on mandibles with missing parts or pathologies based on statistical shape models. The proposed approach relies on a shape model that has been built from the full lower jaw, including the mandible and teeth. The model is fitted to the target, resulting in a reconstruction, in addition to a label map that indicates the presence or absence of t

The Cobra Catheter: A Novel Concept and Device for the Thru-Septal Myocardium Approach.

OBJECTIVES: In our previous study, we suggested the novel septal traversing technique as effective and safe in catheter-based approach for septal myocardium. However, it is limited by its dependence on the septal perforator vein. This study aimed to evaluate the Cobra catheter as a backup catheter to overcome this limitation in swine. METHODS: We designed the guiding Cobra catheter. It consisted of three major parts (the external pull-wire steerable distal tip, the C-shaped shaft, and the steering adjustment handle). We tested the difference in force between the guidewire passing through the

Osteochondrosis and other lesions in all intervertebral, articular process and rib joints from occiput to sacrum in pigs with poor back conformation, and relationship to juvenile kyphosis.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is used to evaluate body composition and limb osteochondrosis in selection of breeding boars. Pigs also develop heritably predisposed abnormal curvature of the spine including juvenile kyphosis. It has been suggested that osteochondrosis-like changes cause vertebral wedging and kyphosis, both of which are identifiable by CT. The aim of the current study was to examine the spine from occiput to sacrum to map changes and evaluate relationships, especially whether osteochondrosis caused juvenile kyphosis, in which case CT could be used in selection against it.

Correlation of brachycephaly grade with level of exophthalmos, reduced airway passages and degree of dental malalignment' in Persian cats.

For many years, there has been a trend to breed cats with an increasing degree of brachycephalic head features, which are known to have a severe impact on the animals' health and welfare. The direct relation between different grades of brachycephaly and their negative implications have not been researched in this species. The aim of this study was therefore to establish correlations between the different grades of brachycephaly and reduced upper respiratory airways, exophthalmos of the eye globes and malalignment of the teeth in Persian cats. Sixty-nine Persian cats of various skull dimensions

Intraoperative two-stage evaluation of muscle contractures in Crowe type IV hips in total hip arthroplasty (a new surgical technique).

BACKGROUND: It is important to maintain soft-tissue balance and prevent muscle contractures after hip reduction during total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with Crowe type IV developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). To make such hips functional and durable, the techniques to achieve soft-tissue balance were studied to create an algorithm for intraoperative 2-stage evaluation of muscle contractures, specifying the optimal order for contracture release. METHODS: Between February 2011 and March 2015, we evaluated 64 patients (75 hips) with DDH for muscle contractures as they underwent THA.

Unsupervised Scoliosis Diagnosis via a Joint Recognition Method with Multifeature Descriptors and Centroids Extraction.

To solve the problem of scoliosis recognition without a labeled dataset, an unsupervised method is proposed by combining the cascade gentle AdaBoost (CGAdaBoost) classifier and distance regularized level set evolution (DRLSE). The main idea of the proposed method is to establish the relationship between individual vertebrae and the whole spine with vertebral centroids. Scoliosis recognition can be transferred into automatic vertebral detection and segmentation processes, which can avoid the manual data-labeling processing. In the CGAdaBoost classifier, diversified vertebrae images and multifea

Postoperative Infection in Patients Undergoing Posterior Lumbosacral Spinal Surgery: A Pictorial Guide for Diagnosis and Early Treatment.

Surgical site infections after posterior spinal surgery may lead to spondylodiscitis, pseudarthrosis, correction loss, adverse neurological sequelae, sepsis, and poor outcomes if not treated immediately. Infection rates vary depending on the type and extent of operative procedures, use of instrumentation, and patients' risk factors. Image evaluation is crucial for early diagnosis and should be complementary to clinical routes, laboratory survey, and treatment timing. Magnetic resonance imaging detects early inflammatory infiltration into the vertebrae and soft tissues, including hyperemic chan

Blount disease.

Blount disease is an asymmetrical disorder of proximal tibial growth that produces a three-dimensional deformity. Tibia vara is the main component of the deformity. Blount disease exists as two clinical variants, infantile or early-onset, and adolescent or late-onset, defined based on whether the first manifestations develop before or after 10 years of age. The pathophysiological mechanisms are unclear. In the Americas and Caribbean, Blount disease chiefly affects black obese children. Without treatment, the prognosis is often severe, particularly in the infantile form due to the development o

An Injured Psittacosaurus (Dinosauria: Ceratopsia) From the Yixian Formation (Liaoning, China): Implications for Psittacosaurus Biology.

We describe a Psittacosaurus specimen from the Lujiatun beds of the Yixian Formation in Liaoning, China with an abnormality on its left fibula. Although a large number of Psittacosaurus specimens are known, only a single example of a pathologic Psittacosaurus has been previously noted. The specific pathology in the current specimen is believed to be a healed fibular fracture as assessed through a combination of gross morphology, microcomputed tomography (microCT), and histology data. The fracture can be identified using microCT, but the degree of remodeling and the stage of fracture repair are
