[MRI of the cervical spine. Creation of a surface coil. Technical and clinical results].

Cervical myelopathy represents a good indication for study by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The MRI examination may be performed without hospitalisation and without any pain or risk for the patient. It often gives sufficient information to decide whether to proceed with surgical intervention, after imaging on standard plain films and ever before cervical myelography. An efficient study of the cervical spinal cord requires special surface coils adapted to this region. We have developed a surface coil, working as a receiver, inductively coupled, tuned and matched all at once, and easy to use

Major cerebral arterial and venous disease in osteopetrosis.

Two patients with osteopetrosis were studied in whom severe stenosis of one or both internal carotid arteries was demonstrated. One patient had autosomal dominant osteopetrosis and the other patient had the autosomal recessive form of the disease. In one patient, probable occlusion of one internal jugular vein and retrograde thrombosis of the contributing dural venous sinuses was present. Venous drainage of parts of the brain occurred through dilated emissary and scalp veins. It appears that major extracranial vessels may be impinged upon by dysplastic bone in osteopetrosis, although this is t

Pitfalls of rotator cuff sonography.

Experience with rotator cuff sonography in 106 patients was analyzed to identify the causes of scan misinterpretation. Possible interpretive errors may be classified into four categories: those from failure to recognize normal anatomy, those caused by soft-tissue abnormalities, those caused by bony abnormalities, and those caused by technical limitations of the study. Errors in recognition of normal anatomy are easily overcome by experience and comparison to the normal, contralateral rotator cuff. Errors resulting from soft-tissue abnormalities were seen in two patients with calcific tendiniti

An approach to mid-facial fractures.

The purpose of this article is to present a concept which facilitates the plain film identification of mid-face fractures. The concept evolves from a logical classification of mid-face fractures based upon the region(s) of involvement (orbit, zygoma, maxilla), the extent of the fractures (unilateral or bilateral) and the characteristic distribution of the fracture lines. Recognition of these fractures depends upon an awareness of the fact that the radiographic signs of mid-face fractures differ in certain respects from those involving other skeletal parts. In addition to skeletal disruption, t

Lunato-triquetral fusion and associated spinal abnormality.

Lunato-triquetral fusion is a rare congenital anomaly. Its association with skeletal dysplasias, tarsal coalitions and synostotic states in the upper limbs and other parts of the body is well established. There is not mention in the English literature about its association with congenital spinal abnormalities and secondary osteoarthrosis in the wrist and two such cases are now described. Both cases presented with symptoms in the dominant hand and had symptoms of backache in the past. Their clinical course and X-ray findings are described.

Wall thickness changes considered as regional myocardial function in ischemic heart disease.

Dynamic changes in left ventricular wall thickness represent a function of the myocardium which can be described, in normal subjects or in disease, without reference to behavior of other parts of the wall. Abnormalities of amplitude, rate and timing of wall thickness change interact in influencing overall ventricular performance, so that even this local function cannot be expressed as a single "index". Infarcted and acutely ischemic myocardium display reduced amplitude of thickness change. The degree to which they also show delayed wall dynamics in man is uncertain. Cross-sectional echocardiog

Facial duplication -- the unique case of Antonio.

A case of facial duplication with its surgical correction in childhood and the consequences on facial growth is reported. It is a unique case in the duration of observation. The following structures were fully duplicated: the nose, the premaxilla, the cribriform plate, the crista galli. In addition there was an enormous facial cleft including lip, alveolus and palate. Additionally there were two rudimentary eye sockets, eyes, and two supplementary eyebrows. The monstrous hypertelorism with the facial duplication was corrected at the age of ten. The surgical procedure is described and the posto

[Occipital foramen in pathology of the osteoarticular apparatus of the craniovertebral region and in normal subjects].

Clinical and X-ray examination of the occipital foramen in healthy individuals and in persons with various congenital and acquired lesions in this region showed, on the one hand, a wide variety of shapes of the foramen in normal conditions and, on the other, the direct dependence of neurologic disorders on the degree of changes in the position of the occipital foramen, its constriction and deformity of its edges. Marked bone changes call for emergency decompression of the compressed or dislocated bulbospinal parts of the central nervous system, the nerves and vessels.

Dosimetric studies in the radiological examination of the hips in young infants with a special fenestration method of gonad protection.

A special lead shield of 1,5 mm Pb, with a fenestration was used for gonad protection during X-Ray of the hips for detection of dysplasia. The window allows the delineation of all parts of the skeleton required to make a correct diagnosis and check the standardized position of the pelvis, while all other parts, especially the gonads are safely shielded. The scattered radiation for the testes was further reduced by a trough-shaped lead shield behind the scrotum. The effectiveness of this gonad protection was measured by direct dosimetric studies on the infant with LiF and CaF2: Dy dosimeters at

The carpus in congenital anomalies of the hand.

Congenital anomalies of the carpus associated with congenital hand and upper limb anomalies were investigated from the point of view of the development of the hand. Defects of the carpus were categorized as follows: 1) Radial ray defect: loss of the scaphoid, trapezium and trapezoid. 2) Central ray defect: loss of the capitate and loss of a part of the trapezium and hamate. 3) Ulnar ray defect: loss of the triguetrum, pisiformis and hamate. Deficiencies of the carpus and more distal parts of the hand proved to be secondary to defects of the forearm bones in both the radial and ulnar ray. On th

Abnormalities of tooth development in pituitary dwarfism.

Roentgenographic studies of the jaws and teeth in a group of forty-eight pituitary dwarfs showed the following abnormalities in the development of the teeth: 1. Delayed shedding of the deciduous teeth. 2. Absence of resorption of the roots of the deciduous teeth at the usual time. 3. Marked delay in eruption of the permanent teeth. 4. Retention of permanent teeth in the maxillary and mandibular shafts. 5. Development of the apical parts of roots of the retained permanent teeth and their growth toward the lower mandibular edge. 6. Displacement of the first molars from the mandibular shaft to ra

Vertebral malformations and associated somaticovisceral abnormalities.

Numerous references to spine abnormalities and associated somatic and/or visceral abnormalities are reported. An implication is present in each that the association is more than just coincidental and some cause and effect relationship might exist. A series of cases was collected in which congenital spine abnormalities were noted on roentgenograms from patients evaluated for varied reasons. Other roentgenograms of these patients and their medical records were reviewed in an attempt to find associated congenital abnormalities. Another group of patients with known congenital visceral malformation
