Sensation of the anal region and rectum after surgery for anorectal malformations was investigated in 32 patients (17 with high type, 6 with intermediate type and 9 with low type anomaly), aged 5 to 16 years. All patients were examined as to whether or not they could appreciate sensations of touch, pain, heat and cold in the circumanal skin and in the anal canal. Rectal sensation and compliance were also examined by anorectal manometry. All patients had normal sensation in the circumanal skin, but less than half of them had normal sensation in the anal canal. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Some stroke patients complain of an unpleasant sensation of coldness in the hemiplegic arm. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of this symptom and any associated features.
METHODS: A questionnaire about symptoms in the arms was sent to patients at least 12 months after stroke. Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) was diagnosed if four typical symptoms were present in the arm.

The treatment of congenital aural atresia has changed in recent years. Better imaging capabilities, the development of tympanoplasty techniques, modification of mastoid dissection, and facial nerve monitoring have resulted in greater patient benefit with less patient risk. Congenital aural atresia is a relatively common anomaly in otology. It requires an early assessment of hearing status and an early evaluation of the degree of atresia. Its surgical management is aimed at obtaining hearing gain and at establishing appropriate auditory canal status for the application of hearing aids. This determines how closely the test result indicates the actual pathophysiologic state, how well it will predict that state in the future, and if interventions or further pathologic changes are reflected by the test. A prospective multimodal neurophysiological study was conducted on 36 patients with end-stage renal failure, 16 of whom subsequently underwent renal transplantation (TR). Nerve conduction study and somatosensory evoked potentials revealed that peripheral conduction deficit, often subclinical, was the commonest abnormality, and TR resulted in substantial improvement. Visual evoked potentials demonstrated subclinical impairment, which did not improve after TR. The brainstem auditory evoked potentials were essentially normal and unaffected by TR.

Experimental work shows that subretinal fluid is removed both by active transport across the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and by passive hydrostatic and oncotic forces that work most effectively when the RPE barrier has been damaged. The results of applying a battery of peripheral nerve function tests in three groups of diabetics are reported. The tests examined the integrity of all the major subgroups of nerve fibres. Outcome after 252 posterior fossa explorations for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia was determined by a retrospective review. Generalised peripheral neuropathy is a well recognised complication of diabetes mellitus and early detection is important in order that morbidity can be reduced by interventional therapy at an early stage.
