BACKGROUND: Inherited cardiomyopathy (ICM) is a genetic disorder characterized by abnormal myocardial structure and function, often progressing to heart failure. FHOD3, a member of the Formin gene family, plays a crucial role in cardiomyocyte cytoskeletal organization. Mutations in FHOD3 have been associated with various cardiomyopathies, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying FHOD3 deficiency-induced cardiomyopathy remain elusive.
METHODS: A FHOD3 knockout (FHOD3-/-) hum

BACKGROUND: Abnormal serum potassium levels are common among peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Many studies have shown hypokalemia as a risk factor for peritonitis, but most were cross-sectional and observational. We intended to analyze the longitudinal association between serum potassium levels and peritonitis in those undergoing PD. METHODS: We included 1,288 patients undergoing regular PD at our institution. The endpoint event was peritonitis. Patients were divided into peritonitis and non-peritonitis groups. The relationship between baseline data and the emergence of peritonitis was analy

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a common and serious microvascular complication in patients with diabetes. In recent years, diabetic tubulopathy has emerged as a major research focus, as its prognosis is closely associated with tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis. Multiple studies indicate that diabetes directly damages renal tubules, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction-characterized by impaired mitochondrial bioenergetics, excessive mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) production, defective autophagy, and lipid metabolism disorders resulting from abnormal lipid accumulation.

BACKGROUND: Everolimus (EVR) is widely used in kidney transplantation; however, the optimal sampling time point for therapeutic drug monitoring and the relationship between EVR exposure and adverse events under tacrolimus-based regimens remain unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed EVR pharmacokinetics in kidney transplant recipients receiving tacrolimus-based immunosuppressive therapy. EVR whole-blood concentrations at multiple post-dose time points were compared with the area under the concentration–time curve from 0 to 4 hours (AUC₀–₄). Associations between EVR exposure and adverse e

INTRODUCTION: People with hemodialysis-dependent kidney failure experience significantly higher cardiovascular (CV) morbidity, mortality, symptom burden, and cognitive impairment compared to the general population. Hemodialysis-induced ischemia contributes to myocardial stunning, which worsens CV outcomes. Intradialytic cycling has the potential to mitigate cardiac stunning, but its effects have not been assessed in randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
METHODS: This multicenter RCT evaluates the impact of 12 weeks of intradialytic cycling on hemodialysis-induced myocardial stunning. The study

BACKGROUND: Continuous local antibiotic perfusion (CLAP) delivers high-concentration antibiotics locally to achieve the minimal biofilm eradication concentration. Although CLAP has shown efficacy in orthopaedic infections, data on serum gentamicin levels and associated complications remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate serum gentamicin elevation and related adverse events during CLAP, and to identify contributing factors.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 59 patients who underwent CLAP for hip or knee joints between 2019 and 2024, with perioperative serum gentamicin lev

Oxyberberine (OBB), a key metabolite of berberine (BBR), has exhibited enhanced pharmacological efficacy compared to BBR. Nonetheless, the potential of OBB in the treatment of hyperuricemic nephropathy (HN) warrants further investigation. Therefore, this investigation focused on elucidating the therapeutic efficacy and underlying mechanism of OBB in counteracting HN. An HN mouse model was established for in vivo study, while uric acid (UA)-stimulated human renal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2) were used for in vitro evaluation. Bioinformatics and molecular docking analyses were also employed.

BACKGROUND: Comparison of a patient's abnormal serum creatinine result to an earlier value is fundamental to differentiating Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), and is the first step in electronic AKI detection systems. For those patients in whom a baseline serum creatinine is unavailable, some systems generate a warning message to highlight the elevated serum creatinine but without distinguishing AKI from CKD (a "?AKI?CKD" warning). We aimed to determine demographic characteristics of this group, the proportion who had a first presentation of AKI, their clinical outco

Background: Although Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is primarily characterized as a skeletal muscle-wasting disorder, the resulting pathophysiological changes extend to multiple non-muscle tissues and organ systems. Among these, renal and urinary tract dysfunctions have been reported, albeit in relatively few studies, as potential complications in DMD patients, sometimes occurring from an early age. Importantly, as life expectancy improves, the incidence of renal impairment is also expected to increase. This narrative review summarizes the available evidence on kidney involvement in DMD and

Talin1 is a focal adhesion protein involved in cell adhesion and migration, with abnormal expression linked to cancer progression. However, its role in testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate Talin1 expression in TGCTs using integrated bioinformatics and immunohistochemical approaches. Differentially expressed genes were identified through GEO and proteomics datasets. Venn diagram, Gene Ontology (GO), and protein-protein interaction (PPI) analyses revealed Talin1 as a key gene in cell adhesion and migration pathways. Prognostic relevance was assessed u

BACKGROUND: An echocardiogram is an essential tool in the evaluation of potential kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Despite cardiac clearance, potential KTRs still have structural and functional abnormalities. Identifying the prevalence of these abnormalities and understanding their predictors is vital for optimizing pre-transplant risk stratification and improving post-transplant outcomes.
AIM: To determine the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD), diastolic dysfunction (DD), pulmonary hypertension (PH), and their predictors, and t

BACKGROUND: Blood-based biomarkers are increasingly incorporated into the diagnostic work-up of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Systemic conditions such as kidney dysfunction (KD) may influence their plasma concentrations and complicate clinical interpretation. While the association between KD and blood AD biomarkers has been previously reported, practical strategies to mitigate this effect has not been defined. For these reasons, we evaluated the impact of KD on plasma levels of phosphorylated tau (p-Tau217, p-Tau181), amyloid-β (Aβ42/Aβ40), and neurofilament light chain (NfL), and developed correc
