Somatomedin is a polypeptide(s) which "mediates" the actions of growth hormone. This pituitary dependent hormone was previously called "sulfation factor," a term derived from the bioassay technique which measures the incorporation of radioactive sulfate into cartilage glycosaminoglycans. Somatomedin has a more general effect upon cartilage; it is necessary for the cell multiplication and cartilage maturation which results in the growth of long bones. Thyrocalcitonin (TCT) is useful as a diagnostic and therapeutic agent in selected human diseases. Elevated plasma levels of TCT occur in patients with medullary carcinoma of the thyroid gland. Asymptomatic relatives of these patients harboring microscopic foci of tumor may have abnormal plasma levels of TCT in the basal state or after provocative stimuli. In both instances the plasma levels of TCT can be used in the diagnosis and management of this thyroid neoplasm. Immunohistological and elution studies of the human placenta revealed the presence of IgG on the trophoblastic basement membrane (TBM) which demonstrated specificity for placental but not lung, thyroid, or kidney basement membranes, suggesting the presence of a placenta-specific antigen in TBM. The present study was designed to compare the Thyopac and Triosorb triiodothyronine uptake tests. A normal range was established for the two procedures. Neither test was affected by iodine-containing drugs or contrast media but abnormal results were obtained during pregnancy and in subjects receiving oestrogens. Follow-up studies of findings obtained during a short programme of biochemical screening conducted on 1,041 patients attending their general practitioners in January 1967 showed that this yielded 64 results that led to a change in diagnosis or method of treatment. Clinical, immunological, and intestinal studies on 26 children with IgA deficiency in the age range 2 to 16 years are reported. 9 of these children were suffering from autoimmune disease, namely thyroiditis (5), thyrotoxicosis (1), rheumatoid arthritis (2), and probable Sjögren's syndrome (1). Four cases of thyrotoxicosis are reported among 35 patients who had been given Thorotrast during the investigation of intracranial haemorrhage. For the group as a whole Thorotrast had been given between 11 and 31 years (mean 23.4 years) before this study.
