The utility of cosyntropin stimulation test in the assessment of adrenal function after unilateral adrenalectomy.

BACKGROUND: There are scant data in the literature regarding assessment of adrenal function after unilateral adrenalectomy. Most research has involved patients with mild autonomous cortisol secretion, with recommendations to use the cosyntropin stimulation test and basal cortisol to diagnose secondary adrenal insufficiency. Our aim was to investigate the utility of the cosyntropin stimulation test in the assessment of adrenal function after unilateral adrenalectomy. METHODS: This was a retrospective institutional review board-approved study of patients who underwent unilateral adrenalectomy b

The Pma-PABP4 gene, regulated by Pma-miR-1444, participates in Pinctada fucata gonad development.

This study cloned and characterized the full-length cDNA of the Pma-PABP4 gene from Pinctada fucata, which is 3123 bp in length and encodes a 641-amino acid protein. The protein exhibited typical RNA-binding protein characteristics, including four RNA recognition motifs (RRMs) and a poly(A)-binding domain. Bioinformatics analyses revealed that Pma-PABP4 is hydrophobic and contains multiple predicted phosphorylation sites. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Pma-PABP4 is highly homologous to PABP4 from other mollusks and shares evolutionary conservation with human PABP1. Additionally, Pma-PABP4 w

Gender differences in the glycometabolic and cardiovascular features of acromegaly.

INTRODUCTION: Gender medicine focuses on disease differences between females and males regarding symptoms, treatment, prognosis, psychosocial effects and prevention. Acromegaly is a rare endocrine disorder caused by excessive growth hormone (GH) production, in the vast majority of cases due to the presence of a GH-secreting pituitary adenoma. Chronic GH elevation leads to increased insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), resulting in tissue overgrowth and a number of comorbidities. Among these, patients with acromegaly can experience various issues of the cardiovascular and metabolic system, inc

The role of necroptosis in adiposity-based chronic disease (ABCD): A review.

Recently, as the obesity rate continues to rise and people's understanding of obesity deepens, adiposity-based chronic disease has appeared in people's view as a new obesity diagnostic term. As an endocrine, nutritional and metabolic disease, the mechanism of obesity is because energy intake exceeds energy consumption, resulting in excessive accumulation of body fat and abnormal weight, which can lead to a series of complications such as insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis (AS) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In the last decade, a type of regulated and genetica

From tradition to healing: the promise of acupuncture in managing chronic fatigue syndrome.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a global public health problem affecting more than 65 million patients worldwide. The combined prevalence rate of CFS was 45.2% after 4 weeks in patients with novel coronavirus. Women, people over 40 years of age, and low-income people are susceptible groups, which have a significant impact on immune, nervous, endocrine, and other system functions. First, from the perspective of epidemiology, this paper reviews the global epidemic trend of CFS, the differences in incidence and prevalence in different regions and populations, and risk factors such as heredity,

Reproductive Endocrine Stability Despite Persistent Hypogonadism in Well-Chelated Adult Women with Transfusion-Dependent β-Thalassemia.

Background: Endocrine complications remain a major cause of long-term morbidity in patients with transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia (TDT), with hypogonadism being the most frequently reported abnormality. Although iron overload is central to disease pathophysiology, its relationship with reproductive endocrine function in well-chelated adult women remains unclear. Methods: This retrospective longitudinal study evaluated endocrine function in 15 adult women with transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia major over a two-year follow-up period at a tertiary care center. Age, hormonal profiles, ovarian

Oxidative phosphorylation patterns in pituitary adenoma/neuroendocrine tumors.

PURPOSE: Pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs), also known as pituitary adenomas, exhibit marked lineage-specific heterogeneity. The underlying molecular biology of certain tumor/adenoma types, particularly gonadotroph tumors/adenomas (SF1-lineage) — which typically exhibit stable genomes — remains poorly understood. This study aimed to define expression patterns of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) system subunits across PitNET/adenoma lineages. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry was performed in 43 previously molecularly and histologically classified PitNETs/adenomas on tumor and normal aden

Biotin-Induced Proximal Renal Tubular Acidosis in an Adolescent Female: Report of a Rare Case With Rechallenge Confirmation.

Proximal renal tubular acidosis (RTA) results from impaired bicarbonate reabsorption in the proximal renal tubule, leading to a normal anion gap metabolic acidosis and electrolyte abnormalities. We report the case of a 16-year-old previously healthy female who presented with recurrent episodes of hypotension, dizziness, and generalized weakness over one month. Laboratory evaluation demonstrated severe hypokalemia, hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis with a normal anion gap, and glucosuria in the absence of hyperglycemia, with preserved renal function. Extensive evaluation for endocrine and autoi

Impact of glucose metabolism abnormalities on live birth rate in South-East Asian women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

STUDY QUESTION: Is there a difference in live birth rates at 24 months between infertile women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who have normal versus abnormal glucose metabolism? SUMMARY ANSWER: Abnormal glucose metabolism did not significantly reduce live birth rates but was associated with increased obstetric complications. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Women with PCOS are often at increased risk of glucose metabolism disorders. However, evidence about the impact of these disorders on pregnancy outcomes remains limited, particularly in Asian populations. STUDY DESIGN SIZE DURATION: This pr

Clinical and Genetic Characteristics of Free Sialic Acid Storage Disorder.

Free sialic acid storage disorder (FSASD) is a lysosomal storage disorder that results from biallelic pathogenic variants in the SLC17A5 gene. This gene codes for sialin, a 12-transmembrane domain protein that exports the charged sugar N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac; sialic acid) out of the lysosome. Dysfunctional sialin causes accumulation of free sialic acid within lysosomes and a range of clinical manifestations, such as intellectual disability, facial dysmorphisms, and increased urinary excretion of free sialic acid. These findings, along with characteristic brain abnormalities on MRI, ma

System-level clustering of testosterone-related biomarkers identifies high-risk aging profiles linked to inflammation and renal function.

BACKGROUND: Serum total testosterone (TT) interacts with multiple physiological systems and is implicated in heterogeneous aging processes in men. However, aging-related phenotypes associated with TT are unlikely to be captured by single biomarkers or conventional clinical categories. This study aims to identify data-driven aging phenotypes based on TT and related clinical biomarkers using an unsupervised analytical framework. METHODS: Clinical laboratory data from 5,877 Japanese male patients undergoing routine health evaluations are analyzed. After restricting the cohort to individuals with

Assay-Specific Diagnostic Thresholds for Adrenal Insufficiency: A Retrospective Comparison of Monoclonal Cortisol Measurements Using Roche Elecsys Cortisol II and Tosoh AIA-CL2400.

Background The diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency traditionally relies on peak cortisol values during stimulation testing, with a cut-off of 18 µg/dL established using polyclonal antibody assays. However, newer monoclonal antibody-based assays show reduced cross-reactivity with other glucocorticoids. In April 2022, our hospital changed the cortisol measurement method from Roche Elecsys Cortisol II to Tosoh AIA-CL2400, both using monoclonal antibodies but with potentially different measurement characteristics. In addition to stimulation test results, physicians initiate hydrocortisone replaceme

Reducing exposure to non-persistent endocrine-disrupting chemicals and their impact on human health: Evidence from dietary, behavioral, and residential interventions.

BACKGROUND: Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are widespread environmental contaminants that interfere with hormonal signaling and are associated with adverse reproductive, metabolic, thyroid, neurodevelopmental, and other endocrine-related health outcomes. Diet, consumer products, and indoor environments are major sources of exposure. While regulatory approaches are critical, practical interventions to reduce exposure and mitigate health effects are increasingly being explored. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review synthesizes evidence on interventions that reduce human exposure to EDCs. This
